There were four areas reserved for Water, Metal, Sky, and Fire. ASB members stood on stage and directed first, second, and third years to their house. As soon as all the kids were ready to go, Ms. Lopez got everyone excited and pumped up as they com- peted to be the loudest when they screamed the Dragon cheer. Water took the lead and earned 500 points for their house. Once the cheer was over, one faculty member from each house volunteered to do a special task. The houses all listened care- fully as Ms. Lopez described what the teachers will have to do in order to win 500 points for their house! Everyone was amused when she stated that the teacher volunteers had to dig through pie plates full of whipped cream and find gummy worms. No hands allowed. The drag- ons cheered for the representatives of their house hoping that they would win the contest. After a very intense contest, Tim Hansen, an ASB mem- ber, announced the winner. “The win- ner is… WATER!” he screamed. There was a roar from the Water house and everyone congratulated Ms. Robson who won the competi- tion for Water. To conclude the pep rally, ASB held another Dragon Cheer contest and Sky was victori- ous. As all the dragons walked to lunch they couldn’t stop talking about the fun filled first pep rally that took place at Del Dios Middle School. Dear Dragon Master,At home I have a lot of brothers and sisters and

I love them. The thing is, they are the loudest andmost spastic bunch of kids I have ever seen.Whenever, I sit down to try and do my homeworkthey manage to be even louder.I haven’t been able to finishmy work and my grade is de-creasing because of it. Pleasehelp me with my sibling prob-lem.

There is an easy solution toyour sibling problem. First youcan kindly and politely tellthem to try to be quiet whenyou work. If that doesn’t work, you can let your parents know

what’s going on and ask them to help. If none ofthis is working, then you can find a quiet spot ei-ther outside, at friends house, or even your bed-room. Everyone needs a getaway spot so they canrelax, do work, and avoid noisy siblings.

Dear Dragon Master,My friend is really on my nerves this school

year She's always bossing me around and yellingat me even if I didn't do any-thing! I get so frustrated that Iwant to just go home and cry. What should I do?

Friendships can be very toughat times, but if it's a true friend, when you let her know the prob-lem, she will understand andturn back to the person youknow and love. If she still actsmean, maybe it's time to find anew friend.

Creating this issue has beena bumpy, exciting, fun, andanticipating roller coaster. The ride can be scary attimes, but is worth it in theend because you have a greatmemory to hold on to, but inour case it's a fantastic newaddition to Volume LII Spiritof the Dragon Newspaper. The rest of the Journalismteam is so amazing and Icouldn't have done any of

this without them. Many people don't realizehow much hair-pulling,stress, and effort goes into thepaper. With all of the inter-viewing, reporting, writing, picture taking, and puttingthe paper together, it takes upquite a lot of our time. Don'tget me wrong, I couldn't behappier doing Journalism andI wouldn't trade it for any-thing. I hope you enjoyed thesecond issue of Spirit of theDragon Newspaper.

September 15th marks the anniversaryof the publication of "The Dot", writtenand illustrated by Peter Reynolds. "TheDot" is a story book for all ages.Starting in 2009, a group of educators

began celebrating this date as"International Dot Day", a day for classesto explore the story’s powerful themes:bravery, creativity, and self-expression.“The Dot more than anything celebrates

the power of creative teaching.” Reynoldsexplains. “Despite the test-centric worldwe live in, creative teachers know how tofind those 'aha moments' much the sameway that my 7th grade math teacher, Mr.Matson, ‘connected the dots’ betweenmath and art, which changed my life.” Tohonor that moment, Reynolds dedicatedThe Dot to Mr. Matson. The Dot tells the story of a caring

teacher who reaches a reluctant student ina remarkably creative way. In Reynolds’book, the teacher dares a very resistantVashti to “make her mark.” Vashti’sbreakthrough begins with a simple dot ona piece of paper. Encouraged by herteacher, she sets off on a journey of self-discovery, letting her creativity bloomand, ultimately, inspiring others.Teacher Terry Shay believed so fully in

the power of The Dot that he “made hismark” by declaring September 15thInternational Dot Day. He encouragedfellow teachers to read the book and thencreate their own dots. Dot Day caught onquickly. Since the first Dot Day in 2009,the numbers of participating educatorsand students around the globe haveskyrocketed. More and more schools are

joining in the fun every year. One simplyhas to search #DotDay on Twitter towitness the enthusiasm of teachersgearing up for this year’s Dot Day. Postsand links adorn the wall of theInternational Dot Day Facebook page:www.facebook.com/InternationalDotDay.Educators are also spreading the wordabout Big Screen Books: The Dot, a groupstory-sharing software program thatallows students to interact with the storyon a computer or interactive whiteboard. How does Reynolds recommend

celebrating? “Spread the word… OnInternational Dot Day, read The Dot, weardots, eat dots, draw dots, frame dots,

connect the dots, splurge on art supplies, try a new medium a new instrument, writea poem, rearrange your furniture, reconnect the dots with an old friend, make something, or make something witha friend. Share your creativity with theworld.”So, Dragons, how will YOUmake your

mark?

Alligator ScarsA 300 Word Story by

Sianna Cruz

By Leandra Heyveld,Staff Writer

Mrs. Peterson Mr. Ngo

On a hot day in Florida, a youngboy went swimming in the water holebehind his house. He took a flyingleap off the dock, and dove into thecool water. He started making his wayto the middle of the water. His mother, who was watching from the kitchenwindow, saw an alligator slip into thewater and quietly move toward herson. She screamed at her son to comeback. The boy was startled at her cries, but didn’t know that a gator wasclosing in on him. Fortunately, hestarted swimming toward shore. Hismother ran down the dock and yankedher son out of the water. As the boywas freed from the water’s embracethe alligator leaped into the air andclamped its powerful jaws on theboy’s legs. The boy screamed in agonyas the alligator and his mother bothpulled on his body. A farmer who wasdriving by heard “Jesus, help us!”,pulled over, and killed the alligator. The boy was rushed to the hospitaland, miraculously, lived. Manymonths later, a reporter came to askthe boy about the incident. He asked,“Can I see the scars?” In reply the boypulled up his pant legs and showed thereporter his vicious looking scars. Theboy said excitedly,”I also got thesegreat scars on my arms.” The reporterasked,”Where are those from?” Theboy replied, “They’re from my mombecause she just wouldn’t let go!”Like the scars that were left on theboy’s legs from the alligator, we allhave the scars of our past. And Ibelieve, that like the mother whowouldn't let go, God won't let us gobecause he loves us.

Who Will Be Your ASB President?By Sianna Cruz, Staff Writer

September 11, 2001 was a day thatchangedAmerica forever. September 11th,known as 9/11, was the day tragedy struckthe U.S. It was a day full of sorrow andloss. 9/11 occurred with four coordinatedterrorist attacks from the Islamic terroristgroup, the al-Qaeda. The heart of the ter-rorist attack was in New York City. Fourpassenger airplanes were hijacked by 19people in total from al-Qaeda. They killedseveral passengers and the captains inorder to take control of the plane and crashin a suicidal attack. Two of the planes flewright into the twin towers with everythingand everyone in them. The third planecrashed into the Pentagon which is theheadquarters of the United States Depart-ment of Defense. The fourth plane’s targetmight of been Washington, D.C. yetcrashed in a field near Shanksville, Penn-sylvania after some brave passengers triedto overpower the hijackers.

Of course, total chaos was happening allover the country. Almost everyone hadtheir eyes glued to the TV in shock, know-ing they should look away, but couldn’tbring themselves to do so. In total, about3,000 people died in the attack includingthe several unfortunate yet brave firefight-ers and the nineteen hijackers. But who ledthe terrorists?

Many suspicious eyes fell upon al-Qaedaand their leader Osama bin Ladin. Osamabin Ladin denied the accusal as would anyother guilty terrorist leader. After bin Ladinfinally confessed, he fled and evaded cap-ture only to be found years later and killedby U.S. forces in May 2011. There are stillseveral and well deserved memorials hon-oring all of the people who died on 9/11.You can watch many documentaries on TVabout this horrid day, some more appro-priate than others. 9/11 is now a remem-brance day and will hopefully be for a verylong time. Many people disagree with thefact that it is a remembrance day because itreminds them of the horrible things thathappened on that day, but it is not about re-membering the events that took place, it’sabout remembering all of the brave andcourageous people who died fighting.

The sound of Dragons roaringfilled the Hall of Champions as thefirst Del Dios assembly began onAugust 22, 2013 . Ms. Lopezrecited the Dragon chant and begana competition between the houses.“Middle school, high school, college, career! Dragon successbegins right here!” The housesscreamed until their throats werehoarse from shouting. Ms. Lopezthen introduced a second housecompetition, "Dragon Q and A".Students from each Dragon housewent on stage and were instructedto answer questions in order toreceive points for their houses. Thequestions that needed to beanswered were shown on apowerpoint. The Dragon houserepresentatives had to press abuzzer and answer the question thatwas on the screen. If the questionwas answered correctly then theywould points for their house. Waterearned 100 points, Fire earned 0points, Metal earned 100 points, and Sky earned 100 points.Mrs. Adkins ended thecompetition and explained howimportant coming to school on timeis, as well as knowing your GPA.Then, Mrs. Adkins introduced

Richard, a valedictorian from SanPasqual High School. He discussedhow he went to Del Dios andfinished high school with a 5.0GPA. Impossible you say? Well, toachieve this you must take APcourses and get involved in clubs.Extra-curricular activities arehelpful as well. If you want to be aDel Dios star like Richard, thantake his advice. After Richard finished speaking, the AP’s and counselors began a

fashion show. The AP’s andcounselors were the models, withMs. Ayles as the host; the modelsdisplayed clothes that aren'tallowed at Del Dios. The houserepresentatives had to point outwhich article of clothing disobeyeddress code. When Mr. Ngo, Mrs.Peterson, Mrs Fiero, and Mr.Rodriguez each had a chance doingthe catwalk, Mrs.Adkins concludedthe first Dragon assembly at DelDios Middle School year 2013-14.

Rethink the meaning of "on time."

People who are always on time arereally people who arrive early everyday--and acknowledge that things can gowrong to set them back several minutes. When things do "go wrong" thesestudents still arrive on time! So on timedoes not mean that you argue with yourteacher that you were in the room whenthe bell rang. “On time” means that youare early, in your seat, and workingwhen the bell rings.

Understand the importance of beingon time. Students who are always ontime are the people who earn the bestgrades, win scholarships, and get intogreat colleges. In the working world, thepeople who are always on time are thepeople who get promotions.Get enough sleep. If you have trouble

getting out of bed in the morning, thenmake a serious effort to get to bedearlier.

Give yourself a realistic amount oftime to dress. You can do this with asimple exercise: Get up early onemorning and time yourself (moving at anormal pace) to see how long it takesyou to get ready. You may be surprisedat the time it takes, especially if you findyou have been trying to squeeze fortyminutes worth of dressing and gettingready into fifteen minutes each morning.Let every member of your family

know that you must be at Del Dios by7:30. All of your brothers, sisters, andparents or guardians need to hear it fromyou! Then they will know that it may benecessary to drop you off first. My entire family, including my 2 year

old daughter hears from me "Mommyhas to leave by 6:30 each morning" andshe repeats it and prepares to say bye tome at the door as I grab my purse.Students who are tardy to period 1 will

receive a phone call each time you arelate and will receive a personal phonecall at the 3rd tardy. The student willthen be assigned to after school classesat the 4th tardy.

Studentswho are tardy to periods 2-7 will receive nutritiondetention. If you are lateto one class each day, youwill give up nutritioneach day. Get to each class on time.

How did you celebrate LaborDay?Chances are, you don’t evenknow anything about Labor Day.Labor Day is a holiday celebratedon the first Monday of Septemberthat honors the economic andsocial contributions of those whowork inAmerica. It was officiallymade a holiday in 1894 to pleasethe unionists that were takingpart in the Pullman Strike. ThePullman Strike took place in1983 because of the 25%decrease in Pullman Palace CarCompany employee wages. Afew days after the Pullman Strikeended, President GroverCleveland signed into law thatofficially made Labor Day anational holiday. Labor Day ispublicly celebrated with a paradethat shows the spirit and strengthof the trade and labororganizations. It is then followedby a festival just for the workersand their families. You may be wondering what the TrophyCase is. The Trophy Case is an article wherewe show off and appreciate all of the greattalent here at Del Dios. Even though theremay not be a trophy, theysure are worthy of one. Hereis our first trophy in the Tro-phy Case, Ryan Eckert!

Ryan Eckert has been cho-sen to be in the DDMS Tro-phy Case because of hissoccer skills. He has been todifferent countries to playtournaments such as Portu-gal and Spain. Ryan has beenplaying soccer for aboutseven years and practices three times a week. You may be thinking how can he be so goodat soccer and only practice three times a

week?Well, the practices are hours long andthey are all the way in Del Mar! Since he’sbeen playing so long, he didn’t even keeptrack of all of the tournaments he won. “Idon’t know, maybe thirty?” he stated. Ryan’sfavorite part about soccer is of course, scor-ing. Also, he plans to play soccer for the restof his life. “My advice to other soccer play-

ers is to practice as much asyou can.” he commentedwhen we asked him if he hadany advice to fellow dragonsoccer players. Ryan Eckert istruly a soccer prodigy and isdefinitely worthy of being thefirst trophy in the DDMSTrophy Case!Do you have a special tal-ent that is worthy for the Tro-phy Case? Submit yourtalent or skill to Room 76

during nutrition or lunch and you may be inthe DDMS Trophy Case!

After the blow of a whistle, theDel Dios football team began flagfootball tryouts. Once the team rana few laps, Coach Wagner startedexplaining the rules and regula-tions of football practice. “Ournext practice will be on Tuesday, and right after the bell rings youhave five minutes to get on thefield!”, Coach Wagner stated. After he told them other importantinformation that they needed toknow, they split into two teamsand began to play some football. There were many who were sur-prised by the ferocity of the tiny

first years that were playing on thefield. When they had finishedplaying their exhilarating game offlag football, those who were tiredleft to go back to X-track whilethose who were wanting morestayed to play a game against sec-ond and third years. With determi-nation and sweat on their faces, the second and third years playersbegan an intense game of flagfootball. “Ready, set, hike!” andoff they went scoring touchdownsand pulling flags. When the sec-ond and third years finished theirgame they left sweaty, exhausted, and full of eagerness for the up-coming season.

All of the footballcoaches and supervisorswork extremely hard inorder for you to have afun, athletic, and amaz-ing flag football experi-ence. Be sure to alwayslook up to them, listento their directions, and, most of all, show themhow respectful Dragonscan be. I hope you allhave a fantastic timeplaying Del Dios flagfootball! Go Dragons!

Last year on September 19,at Del Dios Middle School, there was a day when thewhole school got to act like apirate. It was, and still is,called International Talk Likea Pirate Day.Everyone loved it; espe-cially the Water Dragons!Almost the whole school wastalking like a pirate. Mr.Jaquess, Mrs. Nohe, Mrs.Moon, and Mrs. Murphy, were even dressed as pirates! They looked amazing!Mrs. Nohe and Mrs. Mur-phy even took over DDTV.They barged in, pushed theASB members aside, satdown, and started to talkabout the day. Mrs.Nohementioned that she was

going to walk the plank afterschool.Everyone was anticipatedthe moment to see Mrs. Nohewalk the plank. The bellrung, and sure enough, Mrs.Nohe walked the plank!Everyone was amused asMrs. Nohe dragged a plankof wood behind her. Just likehow people walk their dog,Mrs. Nohe walked the plank!Cameras and phonessnapped photos as she passedby, walking the plank, on themuch loved Pirate Day.So, how about it Dragons?Be ye ready to "arrrr" like aPirate? For more information orjust general pirate silliness, visit the International TalkLike a Pirate website at:www.talklikeapirate.com
