Family Ministries meeting Sunday, March 6, 10 a.m., Mission Café The Family Ministries group serves to connect fami-lies within the First UMC congregation by planning and attending activities that strengthen relationships within the family, the congregation, and the community. If you are a couple with children, a single parent, or foster, adoptive, or grandparent(s) raising children, you are cordially invited to join our group! Family Ministries is planning events for spring that include an all-church bowling party and a Spring Fling dance! Family Ministries is a fun way to get acquainted and get involvedK and maybe learn a few new dance moves!

All-church bowling party The Family Ministries Commit-tee is hosting an all-church bowling party on Saturday, March 12, 1-4 p.m.

Regardless of your age or skill level, please join us at Northgate Bowl (2380 Northgate Avenue NE), for an afternoon of fun and friendship! Reasonable prices, family friendly food for purchase, and lane bumpers for the kids! No registration required. Questions? Contact Sta-cey Wells at <[email protected]>.

Parents’ Night Out Friday, March 4, 6-9 p.m. Activity Time Room (#206) Parents are invited to drop off their chil-dren to be chaperoned by our Childcare Coordinator, Libby Bonn, and trained volunteers. Children will enjoy a craft, snack, playtime, and a movie.

Go Camping! It’s all about relationships with people, the church, and God. Presentation of a Bible in church to third graders has been a tradition and marker for many children throughout the years. It is one of the first events in a young person’s life through which a spiritual prac-tice, reading of the Scriptures, is celebrated in wor-ship. The Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference camp-ing program invites new recipients of Bibles to ex-perience Christian community at camp. If your elementary camp-aged child received a Bible at this year’s presentation, s/he is invited to take ad-vantage of a 50% discount on elementary camp or that child’s cost at a family camp this summer. For information about the camping program, visit the website <gocamping.org>. For more information regarding the discount, please contact Kathy in the Business Office at <[email protected]>.

Emery Wells shows off her bowling skills at the last Family Ministries hosted bowling night! Emery was one of several children who attended with parents and grandparents. Lots of people were heard say-ing, “Black light bowling is lots of fun!”

Organ Endowment Fund donation A huge “thank you” to Sandy Wiscarson for the $5,000 donation recently made to the First UMC Organ Endowment Fund. The gift was given in honor of Edna Wiscarson, Sandy’s mother, who was an avid supporter of music at First UMC. One of our Capital Funds Campaign goals is to have over $50,000 in a permanent endowment fund for our organ. The Capital Funds Campaign committee made the Organ Endowment Fund one of our priorities. We want a fund large enough to provide for maintenance and improvements on our organ into the future. If you would like to help make sure our organ is always well maintained, we encourage you to make a gift to the Capital Funds Campaign or to include the Organ Endowment Fund in your will. Thank you to Sandy, and others, whose generosity is helping us provide for this wonderful instrument.

Short-term project volunteers wanted for archives The Archives Committee needs your help in the following areas: • Someone with experience using Word and Excel

to do data entry, to create new files, and to edit what we have

• Simple, mundane filing • Organizing and cataloging We offer flexible work arrangements, with training, and are open to new ideas for ease of access and research. The positive side is you are in the midst of FUMC’s history and what is being built for the future. Please contact Kenny K. Davies at <[email protected]> or 503-399-0252 with questions and/or to volunteer. Nursery volunteers needed We guarantee lots of smiles for our nursery volun-teers! But volunteering in our nursery is about more than sharing smiles and story time. As a nursery vol-unteer, you are a steward of God’s children and help provide an environment in which children are safe, are taught at an age-appropriate level, and are encouraged to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ. Sunday mornings: We are seeking thirty volunteers to assist on Sunday mornings. Shifts are 8:30-10:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m., one Sunday every six weeks. Share a story, sing a song, and play games. You’ll enjoy your time with our youngest members! We welcome parents, couples, grandpar-ents, and singles.

Parents’ Night Out: Volunteers are needed to help our busy parents enjoy an evening out! Parents’ Night Out is the second Friday evening of each month, September through May. Volunteers are needed to help chaperone children in the Activity Room (Room 206 in the main building) from 6 to 9 p.m. You’ll assist Libby Bonn, our Childcare Coordi-nator, complete a craft project, serve a light snack, supervise playtime, and enjoy a movie.

Mission Café news: “Suffering the election blues?” Are you confused, confounded, or fed up by all the election noise? And, we’re still months away from deciding who will win this or that! Whether it’s for president, mayor, or dog catcher, the 24-7 racket will get you down. Is this what’s bothering you? Here’s the way to combat all the stress: 1. Come to church every Sunday 2. Be on time 3. Listen and learn from the message, and 4. Visit the nifty Mission Café located in the FUMC Dining Room. Your favorite espresso beverage, a tasty treat provided by the world class Mission Café vol-unteers, plus some comforting conversation with friendly church volunteers will give you peace of mind. Or, hear the latest church information from the friendly barista on duty. It’s really a win-win situation! The Mission Café is open most Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Your donations help support three United Methodist missionaries in Nepal and Alaska. You won’t get the election blues when you visit the Mission Café. We guarantee it!

Helping our sister congregations The United Methodist Ministries of Salem-Keizer (UMMSK) Board would like to create an On-Call Main-tenance Team. Some of our smaller churches could use some help. Please call Shirley Cross, Lay Leader at Jason Lee UMC, at 503-580-0841. The Board hopes to have enough response to form a team.

(nursery volunteers continued)

All volunteers in the childcare program must com-plete a background check and follow First United Methodist Church Safe Sanctuary policies. If you have questions or to volunteer, please contact Leta Brewster, Director of Volunteer Ministries, at 303-483-1099 or <[email protected]>.

Connect as a volunteer!

Bridges – Room 110 A gathering and learning space for differently-abled adults and their care-givers Digging Deeper in Theology and Ethics – Carrier Room (Sunday, 10 a.m.) Theme: “Neighbors, Foreigners, and God: Becoming ‘Other’-wise During Lent” Throughout the Bible we are admonished to be neighbors to the stranger and alien, both those near and those far away, those whose experience is both familiar and foreign to us – even to the point of lov-ing them as we love ourselves. In this series we will explore the dynamics of “otherness” not only in our relationships with those who are “neighbors,” but also the otherness we encounter in ourselves and in our relationship with God. A small packet of readings will help spark conversation. Sessions include: Feb. 28 – On Sounds of “Otherness” – Facilitators: Arturo and Irene Fernandez March 6 – On Seeing and “Otherness” – Facilitators: Chuck Foster and Marja Byers March 13 – On Cultural “Otherness” – Facilitators: Chuck Foster and Kent Neely March 20 – Reading Scripture from “Other” Vantage Points – Facilitator: Charlie Wallace March 27 – No class (Easter) Sunday morning opportunities for Youth and Children Sr. High & Mid-High Youth – MICAH Youth Center

To all the ladies of First Church Salem United Methodist Women’s mission to minister to women, children, and youth is more than providing them with food, shelter, or healthcare. We empower women through education, job skills, and sometimes even grants so that they can build a better future for their children, youth, and even for their communities. Education for children and youth also increases their chances for a better life and maybe break the cycle of poverty. United Methodist Women minister to them globally, nationally, regionally, and lo-cally. Some of the recipients who have benefit-ted from your pledge/mission giving include: Center for Hope and Safety, HOME Youth Resource Cen-ter, Liberty House, Shelly’s House, Family Building Blocks, Salem-Keizer Education Foundation, and HOST Adolescent Care Center. Think about what we have done and think how much more could be done if we were many more. Here are two things to think about: How can we be more mindful of the goodness God has given us? How can we be more attentive to the need of God's Children? Change in UMW We lost a very valuable member of our congregation when Rebeca Ernst relocated to Memphis, Tennes-see. Rebeca was our UMW secretary as well as an excellent vocalist in our choir. She carried with her such a lightness and a willingness to do whatever was needed to fill a void with each of her endeavors. We will miss her and we wish her many happy blessings. Jo Ann Von Borstel has graciously ac-cepted the position of UMW secretary. Any woman who is a Methodist is a United Method-ist Woman. The Executive Committee and circles are thinking of ways to restructure the UMW organi-zation to make it more welcoming and meaningful to all of us. If you have any ideas, please share them.

RV trip to Alaska Ben & Ina Sims (along with other FUMC members) are traveling by RV to Alaska in May and June. (Travel by car, pickup, motorcycle, etc., would also be ok as there is lodging in each town/village to be visited.) This is intended to be a trip with the assumption, “You’re on your own, but not alone.” Ben and Ina have traveled to Alaska twice by RV and were stationed in Anchorage for 3 years so they have been to all corners of the state. They

will provide suggested routes, things to see and do, and places to visit. For more information, contact Ben at 503-559-6392 (cell) or 503-363-8558 (home).

Generations Potluck and Speaker Series Thursday, March 24, Noon-1 p.m. Join us in the Dining Room for our March gathering with speaker Ken Bierly, a member of our congrega-tion, who will offer some fascinating insight into Mal-heur National Wildlife Refuge. Ken has experience with environmental regulation, ecological restoration planning and implementation, and general government “red tape cutting” and has worked with the governor’s office and the legislature on natural resource and conservation projects. He has received national awards for his work in wet-lands management, protection, restoration, and edu-cation, including a Hammer Award from the Clinton administration. Everyone is welcome to join us. Bring a dish to share; beverages and table service are provided. Please come and share good food, important information about our Oregon environment, and fellowship. You won’t want to miss this exciting program.

Mardi Gras Auction update! Thank you to everyone who supported our youth fundraiser, the 2016 Mardi Gras Auction, held on Feb. 6. It was a blast! Over 200 guests gathered in the newly-renovated MICAH Ballroom for awesome music (thanks to Jeremy Hickerson and the Keizer Community Band), delicious mocktails (appropriately named: Dangerous Dan, Hurricane Heather, and Wild Wendy), homemade jambalaya and other Cajun treats, fabulous items to bid on, and youth sharing about God’s goodness in their lives and through youth ministry. Over 20 youth were present to volunteer as greet-ers, servers, bus staff, and set-up and cleanup crew. A highlight of the evening for many was hearing high school senior, Gillian Berry, share her testimony. All in all, it was a magical evening that raised over $15,000 for Salem-Keizer Area Youth Ministry, both for mission trips and for programming.
