The afternoon of February22 will bring studentsbetween grades six and

12 to Annapolis High Schoolfor the fourth annual Marineand Maritime Career Fair, anevent that showcases the bestopportunities for Marylandstudents interested in workingin the marine industry. Withdozens of exhibitors ready totalk kids ears off about themarine industry (as well asthose looking for new talent tohire), this is a great opportunity

to get face time with some of

    the areas most knowledgeablemarine experts.

Tis year, more than 50exhibitors are anticipatedto attend the Career Fairalong with 10 times as manystudents. With the passing ofSB90 legislation limiting the

vessel excise tax to $15,000,the Marine rades Association

of Maryland is expecting theindustry to only grow; and todo that, it needs more youngpeople getting involved.

So who should attend thecareer fair? Everyone! Teressomething for every passionand interest, with exhibitorsready to talk Bay conservation, engineering, publishing (hey, thats us!), environmental pol-

icy, boat building and fixing, product design, oceanography, and yes, even sailing.

Te Career Fair isnt just agreat way to get your sailorsout of the house on a coldFebruary afternoon. For manyit means summer employ-ment and internships. MitchManders, an Arnold na-tive, found Marty and ErikLostrum of Scandia MarineServices through the CareerFair and reached out about apotential internship. We have

    a hard time finding qualified

people, says Marty Lostrum,or those who want to work inthe trades. We offered Mitchan internship after his first yearat the Landing School (a boat-building school in southeastMaine) and we were lucky tohave him return three times.

Weve offered him a positionto be with us full time in July.

Te career fair is meant toshowcase Maryland marinetrades, and as such is of-fered primarily to Marylandstudents. However, this is notmeant to discourage studentsfrom other areas, so be sureto register friends, cousins, neighbors, and more.
