SPINPlus is a web-based system that includes a database of funding opportunities, a database of investigator profiles, and a matching alert service. SPINPlus includes three product modules: SPIN, SMARTS, and GENIUS.

• Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN) is a funding opportunities database designed to provide up-to-date information on current federal, non-federal, and international funding opportunities, including: Fellowships, Research Grants, Publication Support, Sabbatical Support, RFAs (NIH Guide), Curriculum Development, Conference Support, RFPs (Commerce Business Daily), and more.

• Contains more than 2,500 sponsoring agencies, which together fund over 11,000 separate funding opportunities.

• Primary source information obtained directly from the sponsoring agencies to ensure the integrity of the data.

• SPIN enables users to search the database using selections from various categories (keywords, location, sponsor, deadline, etc.)

• SPIN Today (Search Federal Register and CBD)

• Quick Links (Canned searches for recent additions/updates, upcoming deadlines, and new sponsors)

To perform a Quick Search, type the word(s) you want to search for in the Quick Search for free text box.

From the Find drop-down menu, select to search All Words (AND logic), Any Words (OR logic), or Exact Phrase.

From the in Fields… drop-down menu, select the field(s) from which the Quick Search will look for your words (Title, Objectives, Synopsis, or All.)

From the Return Results drop-down menu, select the number of results you would like to view per page.

From the in Database Type… drop-down menu, specify the country database to search in which you are geographically located.

From the Sort Order drop-down menu, choose the order in which to sort your search results.

The SPIN Search Results page will appear where you can view your search results.Choose the fields to search. Select the Search Within ExistingAt the bottom of the SPIN Search Results page, you can further refine your Quick Search results or perform a new search.

To narrow your current search results, type the word(s) into the text box. Results option button. Click Search SPIN.

Advanced Search Categories

Database Type allows you to specify the country in which you arelocated in order to find

relevant funding.

Keywords narrow a search by a program’sresearch areas. Each

program is categorized by keywords.

Most important field.

Applicant Types are used to

describe bothyou and your

institution. If more than 1 is chosen, ‘OR’ Logic is used.

Award Types describe the

type of fundingyou seek.

Citizenshipallows you to search on opportunities restricted to a certain citizenship.

GeographicalRestrictions

allows you tospecify where you

are located.

Locations Tenable allows you to

specify where youwould like to

carry out the award.

Title Contains allows you to

search for a word(s) in the program title.

Selecting Keywords

Advanced Search

The Keywords screen appears. Keywords are broken into 12 major divisions. You can select keywords in four different ways:

• Choose an entire division of keywords by major topic for a very broad search.

• Choose specific keywords from an alphabetical listing of the Keyword Thesaurus.

Now we will view an example of how to search using the Search for a Particular Keyword box.

The most common category to utilize in Advanced Search is the Keywords category. Keywords are words/terms that are used to describe the research areas funded by a particular program. From the Advanced Search page, click Keywords.

Since keywords of interest may fall across two or more major divisions, you can search the entire Keyword Thesaurus for a particular word(s), by entering a root word (ex. bio) into the Search for a Particular Keyword box. Click Search.

Keywords containing the root word “bio” will be returned. Highlight keywords from the resulting list and click Select to save keywords.

To select multiple keywords from the list, hold down the Control key (or Command key on a Mac) while clicking the mouse.

Keywords that appearin all caps on the list indicate general keywords. Selecting these keywords will increase the number of general “hits” returned.Once you have selected keywords, click Select then Return to return to the Advanced Search page.

OR Logic is automatically imposed on selected keywords.

You can also select Keywords using AND Logic. To select keywords using AND Logic:

Click Use Boolean AND Logic from the Advanced Search page.Click the first Keywords link. The Keywords screen will appear where you can make keyword selections.

Selected keywords (ex. Cancer Biology) will appear in the text box below the Keywords category.Click the second Keywords link. The Keywords screen will appear where you can make keyword selections.

Selected keywords will appear in the text box below the Keywords category and will automatically be ANDED with the first selection of keywords (ex. Cancer Biology AND Breast Cancer.)

After Keywords, focus the search by adding criteria under appropriate categories.

Select the country in which you are geographically located to receive relevant results.To exclude programs for which you are not eligible, select Applicant Types that describe both the individual and the institution applying for the award.

Select Award Types if you are looking for a particular funding mechanism (ex. Research Grants/R&D only) to exclude funding mechanisms you are not interested in (ex. Fellowships, Internships, etc.)

Choose your citizenship and Any/No Restrictions to include those programs that do not impose citizenship restrictions.

Geographic Restrictions should be used to restrict programs based on where you are located. Choose your state, region(s), and NO RESTRICTIONS to include programs that do not impose geographic restrictions.

Locations Tenable allows you to specify where you would like to go to carry out the award. Include Any/No Restrictions to include programs that do not specify where the award must be carried out.

Selecting Deadlines

• Choose Equals, Greater Than, or Less Than a specific date to exclude certain SPIN programs by deadline date.

• Choose Range to search for programs with deadline dates within a specific range.

• Choose Open Dates Only to include only programs with open deadlines in your search.

Advanced Search

• All is the default and will include all SPIN programs in your search regardless of the deadline date(s).

The Deadline(s) field can be used to narrow search results by deadline date(s). Click Deadline(s) from the Advanced Search page.

View/Delete Search Criteria

To delete a search criterion, select the check box to the left of the search item(s) that you would like to remove.

Click Delete Items to return to the Advanced Search page.

You can view and/or delete criteria from a search by clicking the View Criteria/Delete Items link at the top of the Advanced Search page or the Delete Items link at the bottom of the Advanced Search page.

Boolean logic is incorporated within and among Advanced Search categories. Values within each category are linked by OR logic. In the example below, in order to get results, each program must include ONE of the Keywords, ONE of the Applicant Types, and ONE of the Award Types.

• Keywords: Bleeding Disorders OR Blood Diseases

• Applicant Types: College, 4-year OR Colleges/Universities

• Award Types: Research Grants/R&D

OR Logic Within Fields

AND, OR, or NOT logic is incorporated among categories.

In the example below, in order to get results, each program must include ONE of the Keywords AND ONE of the Applicant Types, but NOT ONE of the Award Types.

Once you select your search criteria, you can save and reuse your searches. To save a particular search, enter your search criteria and click Save Search.

Setting up a SPIN Account

If you are a new user, but have a GENIUS profile and would like to use the same username and password, select the First Time Users option button along with the (or) Use GENIUS Account (Enter your Username & Password) option button. Enter your GENIUS username and password and click Continue.

The SPIN account screen will appear. If you are a first time user, you must create an account or use your GENIUS profile username and password.

If you already have saved searches in SPIN, you can select the Existing Users (Enter your Username & Password) option button. Enter your username and password for SPIN saved searches and click Continue.

You can also elect to have SPIN automatically remember your username and password, or you can opt to always type in the information yourself by selecting the option button that specifies your preference.

To create a SPIN account as a first time user, select the First Time Users option button and click Continue.You will need to enter your contact information and create a username and password for your saved SPIN searches. Click Create Account when finished. By setting up your personal profile, you can save the details of your searches and automatically reload them at anytime.

Once you create a SPIN account and/or enter your username and password, the Search Description screen will appear. Give your search a name and description. Click Save Search to return to the Advanced Search page.

Search can automatically run: • Every Day• Every Week• Every Month

The results will be emailed to you automatically.

Choose “No Thanks” if you do not want to receive email notifications.

After you have saved at least one search, you can re-run that search by clicking Load Search at the top or bottom of the Advanced Search page.

You will be prompted to enter your SPIN username and password. The Saved Searches screen will appear where you can select the option button next to the search you would like to load.

Running a Search

At the bottom of the Advanced Search page, categorize your search results by selecting a Primary Sort.

You can further sort your search results by selecting a Secondary Sort.Once you select your sort options, you can set the number of search results that will be displayed per page. The number of results you can select ranges from 25-100.

Click Run Search to run the search.Once you select your search criteria, you can categorize your search results and set the number of results that will be displayed per page before running the search.

Viewing Programs

Once you click a Program Number, the entire SPIN program will be displayed on the screen. Program details are organized into categories for easier viewing.You can email the program information to a colleague by clicking the E-mail Program to a Colleague link.An email message will appear with a Subject line and the SPIN program information in the Body of the email. Click Send Email. All you have to do is enter your email address and the person’s email address to which you are sending the program.

To Print or Save to File your search results, first select the programs you would like to include in your report by selecting the check boxes next to the appropriate Program Numbers.

• Global Expertise Network for Industry, University, and Scholars (GENIUS) is a global WWW network and database of scientific and scholarly expertise containing profiles entered and maintained by scholars and researchers at leading universities and research institutions throughout the world.

• GENIUS provides a searchable resource for locating academic investigators/research partners for potential collaborations.

• Search profiles based on Keywords, Research Interests, Institution, State, and/or Country. You can also perform free-text searches on full profiles.

• SPIN Matching And Research Transmittal Service is an electronic matching and funding opportunity notification system which provides investigators with a direct and targeted electronic link to comprehensive, current, and available national and international research funding information.

• Matching is conducted on a daily basis and programs are automatically emailed to individual researchers.

Registering for GENIUS

Click Create a New Profile from the SMARTS/GENIUS Search main page to create a GENIUS profile.

You must create a GENIUS profile to receive SMARTS matches and/or to store your Curriculum Vitae. An alphabetical list of institutions will appear. Highlight your institution and click Select.The New Profile Registration page will appear. You will be required to enter your first and last name, email address, department affiliation, and username and password.

When complete, click Submit.

It is extremely important that your email address is present and accurate to ensure proper notification of funding opportunities.

The Profile Summary Page will appear.

This is the name of the investigator/faculty member and the institution with which they are affiliated.

The Full Profile View will display all of the categories/information you have entered into your profile.

Account Status

Account Status indicates whether a profile has been validated or is pending validation. A profile must be validated by your Module Administrator in order to receive SMARTS matches.

General and Keywords categories need to be completed in order to receive SMARTS matches or to store your Curriculum Vitae.

Categories Required for SMARTS

Required fields are Name, Department, Email, and Citizenship.In order to receive SMARTS matches, you need to fill out the General and Keywords categories.

Click General from the Profile Summary Page.The General Information page stores all of the investigator’s contact/institution information.

Under Private Profile, select Yes to prevent your profile from being searchable within the GENIUS database. Select No if you would like your profile information to be visible to investigators at your institution or globally.

Click Department for instructions on selecting your primary department.

To move from one field to the next, use the TAB key on your keyboard or the mouse.

Selecting Departments

A list of all of the departments within your institution will appear when you click on the Department link from the General screen. Click Save Changes to return to the General Information page.Choose the department where you hold academic rank as your primary

department by checking the box to the left of the appropriate department. Make sure the primary option button is selected.

To choose additional secondary departments with which you are affiliated, click the box to the left of each appropriate department title.

The Username Change page will appear when you click Change Username from the General Information page.Enter your new username in the Enter New Username text box.Click Save Changes to return to the General Information page.

Categories Required for SMARTS

After you have entered your General information, there are five questions at the bottom of the General Information page that need to be answered in order to receive SMARTS e-mail notifications.

Question 1

Question 1 allows you to specify whether you would like prospective partners/collaborators, who find you in GENIUS searches, to contact you directly or make initial contact with your institutional contact.

Question 2

Question 2 allows you to specify whether you would like to receive SMARTS matches. To receive SMARTS matches, make sure the Yes option button is selected.

Question 3

Question 3 allows you to specify how you would like to receive your SMARTS matches (in a single email message or one “hit” per e-mail.

Question 4

Question 4 allows you to specify whether you only want to receive SMARTS output of programs from U.S. sponsors only.

Question 5

Question 5 allows you to specify the format in which you would like to receive your SMARTS output (Full Program or Summary Format).

The Keywords screen appears. Keywords are broken into 12 major divisions. You can select keywords in four different ways:

Since keywords of interest may fall across two or more major divisions, you can search the entire Keyword Thesaurus for a particular word(s), by entering a root word (ex. cardio) into the Search for a Particular Keyword box. Click Search.

To select multiple keywords from the list, hold down the Control key (or Command key on a Mac) while clicking the mouse.

OR Logic is automatically imposed on selected keywords.

Once you have selected keywords, click Select/Save Changes to save keywords.

Keywords that appearin all caps on the list indicate general keywords. Selecting these keywords will increase the number of general programs you receive as SMARTS matches.

Click Return to return to the Profile Summary Page.

Exact Matching: In the example above, if you chose the keyword HEALTH AND SAFETY/MEDICAL SCIENCES/BIOMEDICAL in combination with Exact Matches, you would receive SMARTS matches of SPIN programs that contain that exact keyword.

Hierarchical Matches: If you chose the same keyword in combination with Hierarchical Matches, you would receive SMARTS matches of SPIN programs that contain that exact keyword, plus SPIN programs containing any keywords that fall hierarchically under HEALTH AND SAFETY/MEDICAL SCIENCES/BIOMEDICAL, such as Anatomical System/Sites, Bone Marrow, Cardiovascular System, etc.

Deleting Keywords

Once you select keywords, they will appear at the bottom of the Keywords screen. To delete existing keywords, select the check boxes next to the keywords you would like to delete and click Delete Checked Keywords.

Categories Required for SMARTS

Once you select keywords based on your areas of interest, you have the option of selecting additional criteria in the categories under Used in SMARTS matching to tailor your search.

To exclude programs for which you are not eligible, select Applicant Types that describe you (ex. faculty member, researcher/investigator, graduate student, etc.)

Select Award Types if you are looking for a particular funding mechanism (ex. research grants only) to exclude funding mechanisms you are not interested in (ex. fellowships, internships, etc.)

Geographical Restrictions should be used to restrict programs based on where you are located. Choose your state and region in combination with No RESTRICTIONS.

Locations Tenable allows you to specify where you would like to go to carry out the award. Include Any/No Restrictions to include programs that do not specify location restrictions.

Sponsor Types describe the type of organization administering the grant/award (ex. federal, foundation, etc.)

Advisees: Store data about students/scholars with whom you have served as thesis advisor.

Collaborators: List individuals with whom you have collaborated on a project, book, article, report, or paper.

Committee Memberships: List any committees on which you have served.Courses Taught: List the courses you have taught.

Creative Activities: List any exhibits, performances, public collections, public artistic presentations, etc. in which you have participated.Education: List educational background.Employment: List your current and previous employment.

Honors and Awards: List any honors and awards received.

GENIUS categories and their purpose are described below.

Languages: List proficiency in all languages.Patents: List all patents granted.Professional Associations and

Societies: List all professional associations to which you have belonged.

Professional Licenses/Certificates: List all professional licenses and certificates obtained.

Publications: List all works you have had published.Research: Enter information

about your research and research interests/areas of expertise.

GENIUS categories enable you to store your Curriculum Vitae. You may enter information into as may categories as needed to satisfy your personal requirements.

To create a Biosketch Template, click Add under the Biographical Sketch heading on the Profile Summary Page.

The “Please Enter a name for your New CV Bio” dialog box will appear.

Enter a name for your new CV Biosketch in the text box and click OK.

The CV Bio Setup Form will appear displaying all of the information that has been entered into your GENIUS profile.

Leaving the drop-down box blank will omit that information from being displayed in the selected formats.

Click Save Layout when you are finished ordering the categories and the information within each category.

Determines the order in which the category name will be displayed in the Full CV format.

You can select the order in which each category will appear in the the Full CV Word document format. FF and FF Modular Biosketch formats generate the official 398 form. The categories can not be rearranged.

You can determine the sequence in which each item within a category will be displayed on the FF, FF Modular, and Full CV biosketch formats. Information under the General category will automatically be displayed first.

Viewing Biographical Sketch Templates

Click the .PDF icon under the FF or FF Mod header next to the template you want to view. Once you create a biosketch template, you can view the forms in three formats.Click here to view FF or FF Modular form. The official NIH 398 Biosketch forms will appear in .pdf

format and will contain the information that you selected from your GENIUS profile.

Click the Word icon under the Full CV header next to the template you want to view.Click Download Document to view the Full CV.The CV information that you selected from your GENIUS profile will be displayed in a Word document. This document can be saved to your hard drive and edited in Microsoft Word or Word Perfect.

Editing/Deleting Biographical Sketch Templates

Once you have created a biosketch template, you can edit or delete your biosketch at any time. To edit your Biosketch Template, click the edit icon under the Edit header next to the template you want to edit.

The CV Bio Setup Form will appear where you can make your changes. Click Return to return to the Profile Summary Page.

To delete your Biosketch Template, click the delete icon under the Delete header next to the template you want to delete.

The “Are you sure you want to delete this CV Bio?” dialog box will appear. Click OK to delete the CV Bio.

Quick Search To perform a Quick Search, type the word(s) you want to search for in the Quick Search for free text box.

From the in Fields… drop-down menu, select to search Keywords, Research, Patents, or Publications. (The categories correspond to information that each investigator/researcher entered in their corresponding GENIUS profile categories.)

From the in Country… drop-down menu, select the country from which you would like to search for investigators/researchers.

From the Return Results drop-down menu, select the number of results you would like to view per page.

After you run your search and view your results, you can create reports of GENIUS profiles from the GENIUS Search Results page.

To Print or Save to File your search results, first select the profiles you would like to include in your report by selecting the check boxes next to the appropriate investigators’ names.
