before you come in … and … bring the FOOD DONATIONS inside with you!
We will take care of the rest! THANX!
Message from the President I hope that each of you had a wonderful Easter. Brenda and I were not able to
join those of you who had brunch at the Hawthorne Inn on Easter Sunday because
her family traditionally comes to our house on that day every year for lunch after
church. There were 29 of us together this year and we enjoyed a great few hours
of family time together. I’m sure that those of you in our AACA Family also had
a good time together. The folks at the Hawthorne Inn will definitely know the
Old Salem Chapter by the time October comes.
Those of us who are working on the Tour have certainly been busy. Besides
the 2nd
Monday Monthly Meeting of the Tour Committee, there are many sub-
committee meetings going on as well as plenty of “foot work” to plan the details
of the tour. I want to thank everyone who is working so hard to plan our tour. I
think we will all be proud of what we have to offer our tour guests.
As I write this, I’m not sure when the Newsletter will go out, but I wanted to
say that I will miss the Garage Tour on the 17th
. Along with David, Ralph and
Hope, I will be attending the AACA Regional Board Meeting in Stoneville. I
know that everyone will enjoy Gurney’s place as much as I have when I’ve visited
him. Thank you, Gurney for allowing the club a chance to see your garages.
Our next regular club meeting will be on April 17th
at the Olympic Restaurant.
We will eat at 6:00 and begin our meeting promptly at 7:00. The meeting will be
the last chance to turn in a survey. If you have not completed your survey, please
do so and bring it to the meeting or you may mail it to me. After our meeting, we
will compile the information and share the feedback with you.
Until then, happy cruisin’
Roger

Owens Racing & the Renn Gruppe Outing Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter
On Saturday, March 24, a number of our OSC members went to Lexington by invitation from the Mid-
Carolina Antique Drivers Region AACA to join them on an Outing to Owens Racing and The Renn Gruppe.
Upon arrival, we saw two large metal buildings and lots of old
motor homes and cars in
various stages of restoration.
Barry Owens, the owner of
Owens Racing, greeted us
along with Eric Marsh, the
president of MCADR. After
a few words from Barry and
Eric our “tour” began with
Barry leading the way into his
facility.
Barry’s first love has been Corvairs, having over thirty onsite, some restored and others for
“pieces/parts;” there were a couple of real beauties inside. One of his “pieces/parts” cars outside was a
Corvair Station Wagon … first time I had ever seen one of them. There were also several racecars being
3
built which is an ongoing process for Owens Racing. Another love he has is restoring old GMC motor
homes and a number of them were onsite
in various stages … very interesting.
Next door is the Renn Gruppe, a high
end racing Porsche facility, with one-of-
a-kind famous race winners. Wow …
talk about some high dollar stuff …
whew! David Brown, who gave us the
tour, had some really interesting stories to
tell about those Porsches! But not only
did they have Porsches in that building,
there were some Corvettes and other
sports cars that they were restoring, too,
along with a few other race cars that were
just “lookin’ purty” like one of Kevin
Harvick’s Goodwrench cars and also one
of Jeff Gordon’s “Rainbow Warriors”
cars. This 20K sq. ft. facility was
jammed packed with interesting history!
Well, naturally, it was time to eat after all that, so we headed down the road a piece to Back Country
BBQ and had a great lunch before we went on our way.
A BIG THANK YOU TO ERIC MARSH AND HIS MCADR FOR INVITING OUR OSC!
WE HAD A GREAT TIME!
“Soul Sistas” at the Barn Dinner Theater Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter
On Sunday, March 25, 18 of our OSC members went to the Barn Dinner Theater in Greensboro to see the
show “Soul Sistas.” This was a show about the legendary “Divas with voices of pure gold.”
“From the days of old, a style of music was formed that shook the world. It
brought forth Divas with voices of pure gold. Voices that have journeyed
through time gracing the airways with a foot stomping, hip shaking sound
like no other. Featuring hits that span from the sultry jazz notes of Nancy
Wilson to the “Ivory” Queen of Soul, Teena Marie, Aretha Franklin, and
more.”
But … first … we had to eat … oh, yes! And eat we did! You definitely
have to go there on an empty stomach because, if not, there is no way you
could sample all of that wonderful food. After we were done, the emcee
came out, gave us a few ground rules and welcomed groups, then
followed with “Happy Birthdays” and “Happy Anniversaries,” which are
always sooo much fun.
OK … Showtime! The lights went down and the stage descended
from the ceiling and we were rockin’ for the next 90 minutes or so! All of
the actors/singers were so talented with such beautiful voices … very, very
entertaining! Another great time at the Barn Dinner Theater!

Welcome Easter Parade Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter
Saturday, March 31, was Welcome’s Annual Easter Parade. It was a lovely day for a parade and our
club was #89 in the parade line-up, which tells you that it was a BIG parade … lots of entries!
Welcome’s Easter Parade is always a lot of fun! We had about 5-6 members from our club show up
which was actually good because there were a lot of events going on that same Saturday. It’s getting to be
that time of the year where events are overlapping one another … it’s just a pick and choose kinda thing
now. But for those of us that were there, it was an enjoyable afternoon.
Since we were near the end in the lineup, it took us a little longer to
move to get started, but once we got onto the main parade route, Old Hwy.
52 through Welcome, there were “tons of people,” as usual. It always
amazes me just how many people will show up for these parades … they
truly love a parade … and the kids are so cute to see, they get so excited.
We always like to take our little Toy Pomeranian Muffie with us, too,
and the kids just love seeing her … and some of the adults! Muffie seems to
enjoy it, too … she gets into her “parade mode” and just puts her paws on
the windowsill and then stays there the whole parade route … just blinkin’
her eyes, funny!
The only downside to driving in these parades is John’s left foot having
to work the clutch so much … he welcomes a little hill where he can coast it a little bit … and of course, he
has to watch the temperature gauge, too. We have had problems with that last year, but since he’s gotten a
new fan shroud on it this year, it seems to be doing its job. Sooo … we will continue with our smilin’ and
wavin’ in whatever parade we can drive in! Come join us next time! It’s a happy thing to do!
“Centerline” Band in Lexington Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter
We have some resident talent in our OSC that some of our members may not be aware of and not many
have seen. Our new vice president, Ralph Proscia, is a talented musician who plays the lead guitar and sings
with his longtime friends in a well-known band called “Centerline.” All of these gentlemen have a
wonderful blend of individual talents and it is a real pleasure to listen to them “at work.”
On Friday evening, April 6, some of our OSC members traveled to Lexington to hear Ralph and
“Centerline” play at the Carolina Danceland. Before our drive there, some of us met for dinner at Mama
Mia’s Restaurant in Wallburg for a good Italian meal and fellowship. After a leisurely dinner, we then
loaded up and headed to Lexington.
We were greeted by Ralph and his wife, Benny, and then we also saw Lib and Joe Mabe, our club
chaplain, there, too, that we weren’t expecting to see, which was a nice surprise! After chatting with them
and finding our seats, it was 8:00 o’clock and time for things to get rolling … “Centerline” took to the stage!
We all had a great time … some of us even dancing more than usual! Thanx Ralph & friends for a fun
evening!
Ralph will probably not like me doing this, but I’m gonna brag on him a little bit, pulling some of this
information from Centerline’s website: http://centerlineband.biz/tourdates.html
“It was in the early 90's that Centerline burst onto the North Carolina music scene playing a
variety of music from the 50's to the 90's. The ability of the group to play not just one style, but
Rock, Southern Rock, Country Rock, Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues and Beach, is one of many
things that has brought Centerline its popularity over the years and enabled the group to perform
at such genres as clubs, weddings, outdoor concerts & street fairs, social events and private
parties. Often, the group will hear the comment, ‘You are bound to hear songs you like with this
group.’”
5
“Ralph, left in this pic, originally from
NYC has played professionally for over 30
years playing guitar, mandolin and singing
lead and background vocals. During the late
fifties and early sixties he performed and
recorded with many Do-Wop groups such as
the Devotions, Jay and the Americans, and
toured South East Asia with a group called No
bodies Children. Over the years he has
performed with many artists and varied styles
such as Kenny Rogers, The Carter Brothers
and James Brown. He has played with
Centerline for over fifteen years.”
Easter Sunday Brunch Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter
We certainly hope that everyone had a wonderful Easter and what a beautiful day it was! 24 of our Old
Salem Chapter members decided to do something different for the first time … we all “broke bread”
together at an Easter Sunday Brunch on April 8 at the Bayberry Bistro in the
Hawthorne Inn in Winston-Salem! Judy Colley thought about looking into
doing a Brunch for Easter and after she and I talked about it, the Hawthorne
absolutely was the best price and since it is going to be our host hotel for our
fall tour, this was absolutely the right place to go to.
When we arrived, our “hostess with the mostest,” Judy Colley, greeted
everyone in her usual bubbly fashion. We gathered in the lobby waiting for
everyone to arrive and then Judy announced that the Hawthorne Inn had
graciously agreed to take our group on a tour of their facility, visiting the areas that our “Ghosts and
Legends” Tour will be using in the fall, giving everyone an opportunity to “check out” the hotel.
First, we went to what is going to be our “Hospitality Room” … this will be an area that will be
available for everyone to socialize and get information during the tour … a “hang out” place, if you will.
Across the hall from that, two rooms were opened up so we could see the private room accommodations …
very, very nice. Everything was just recently remodeled and it is in tip-top shape, just beautiful.
On our way back from there, the outside pool area was opened up for us to see. This is a very large area
that is walled in and very private with a beautiful pool that we are hoping to be able to use for our Welcome
Reception, weather permitting … but … if we can’t, it will then be brought inside to the Ballroom area
upstairs.
Our next stop was the Breakfast Room. This area is VERY nice and offers a complete full and HOT
breakfast that is included with the room rate … and is nicely decorated, too.
Our last stop was the Ballroom upstairs where we will have our Closing Banquet on our Saturday night
of the tour. Again, very, very nice! The Hawthorne Inn is truly a “class act” and they have been most
accommodating with all of our needs. Our tour guests will definitely go away from there with some good
comments!
OK … time to eat! Our tables were ready and waiting, we got our places, and then headed for the food!
Oh, my, what a selection: Roast beef, ham, chicken w/sauce, flank steak, mac 'n cheese, rosemary potatoes,
squash casserole, asparagus, and assorted … yummy … desserts … and a few other side items that I can’t
6
remember! When we got back to our tables, James Alley said the blessing and then we dug in! Wow …
sooo good … I think we all waddled out of there!
It was a really nice afternoon and I want to thank all of you that came and a BIG THANK YOU TO
JUDY FOR PULLING ALL OF IT TOGETHER! IT WAS GREAT!
Personal Notes and Rumors
Please keep Leo Baker (and Pat) on your prayer list. Leo still has an oil leak and has to get have a quart added
all along. Hopefully keeping well lubed and topped off as needed will extend his mileage and Pat won’t have to
trade him in on a newer model. Seriously, we hope you can find just the right “stop-leak” to take care of that
issue and will be able to extend your fill-up intervals so you can enjoy even the everyday trips.
Please keep Dennis Gregory (and Ann) on your prayer list. Dennis is still in therapy and getting better all along.
We’re glad to see you up and around again!
Please keep Pat Hailey (and Jimmy) on your prayer list. Pat is still dealing with health issues but Jimmy tells us
that there’s a new patch that could eliminate the highs and lows as her medication wears off once it is approved.
We hope that works out soon and that it will be successful in evenly dispersing the medication so you feel great
every day!
Please keep Lee Hutchins in your thoughts and prayers during these difficult days after the loss of Bill. Please let
us know if your Old Salem Chapter family can be of help.
Please keep Fran Powers (and Richie) in your prayers. Fran has some good days and some not so good days but
she still has a good attitude and that’s a blessing when dealing with difficult issues. Fran and Richie appreciate
your thoughts and prayers and they value your friendship.

April 2012
“Wade & Ann Beeson”
Wade and Ann are native to this area, Wade being raised in Wallburg and being raised just across the county line in
Forsyth County. They met on a blind date while in high school and decided to get married at the young age of 17
(Ann) and 18 (Wade) even though Ann’s mother had to sign for her since she was still a “baby”. She just wanted to
be Wade’s “Baby”! That was a major decision for them to make at such an early age but it must have been the right
one because they are still married (to each other) and celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in January of this year.
Wade has been an Ole Car Enthusiast since old cars weren’t so old. His first car was a ’48 Ford, then a ’40 Ford,
and then a ’47 Chevrolet which he taught Ann how to drive. After Ann got the hang of driving, they traded the ’47 for
a red and white ’55 Chevy Bel Air with a 265 V8 4-BBL and “power pack” heads. They still wish they had that
classic but along came a ’62 Chevy that they had to have and the ’55 found a new home.
Wade still had a love for “older” vehicles and found a ’36 Chevy pickup that needed a little work so that became
his first “restoration” although not exactly defined the same way “restoration” is defined today.
Along the way Wade and Ann raised 3 daughters and now have 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Wade
and Ann both worked in the furniture business, Wade in the upholstery part of the business for 56 years and Ann as
manager of a quilting shop. During their earlier years, Wade liked to race dirt bikes and trail bikes and even taught
their daughters how to ride some small (50cc) bikes while Ann served as cheerleader. Wade still enjoys 2-wheeling
and has progressed to a much more comfortable Honda Goldwing.
If Wade had to pick his most favorite vehicle out of the many he has owned he said that would probably be his
Butternut Yellow 1968 El Camino. Ann has liked all of them but one is especially memorable to her and that would
be her ’69 Chevy Wagon which magically turned into a tree while she was driving down the road. That magic trick
totaled the Chevy, broke her nose, and caused her to have a historical pericardial heart surgery, one of the first in the
Winston Salem area.
Wade and Ann always stay busy, and Ann, in her “spare time”, volunteers at the Baptist Hospital where she will
receive her 4,000 hour pin next week. She is also the secretary for their church, and a member of the choir, and she
loves to create handmade greeting cards. Wade loves to tinker things around the house, with equipment, and helping
out friends and relatives when something isn’t working right. He and Ann both like gardening and having fresh
vegetables.
When asked what they like about AACA and the Old Salem Chapter, they’ll tell you they like the fellowship with
all the wonderful folks and of course the magazines and newsletters. We’re tickled that they’re a part of our Old
Salem Chapter Family.
