Message from the President As usual our club has been busy this past month. It‟s great to see so many of our

members at the various events.

At last month‟s meeting we presented the money to Keri‟s Crusade for ALS and the

presentation of Honorary Memberships to the supporters of our Poker Run/Cruise In. It

was a great honor to be part of this. Our little club has great potential for bigger and

better things. Again, I want to thank all that helped with this event.

Also, this past month we had our International Pot Luck at Marcy Aho‟s. There was

some great food and it was a fun time. Marcy kept trying to get people in the pool but

there were no takers.

The July Downtown Kernersville Cruise In was a great success! We had between 130

and 140 cars on the street. Other than being very hot everything went well. We‟re hoping

to top this in August.

I would like to thank Grover Parks for setting up the Virginia Car Collection Tour.

This is a remarkable collection amassed in just 10 years. I have never seen so many

Mercury cars and trucks in one place. There were also many Fords, a few GMs and I

think I might have seen a few Mopars.

If you haven‟t been to the Cruise In at the square in Mocksville you really should try

to go. That little town real jumps on Cruise In night. When you get into town find a

place to park and set up your chairs. You can sit just about anywhere and still be able to

hear the music and announcements. They have door prizes and a 50/50. They also have a

drawing using the door prize tickets for two Cars of the Week. These two cars get

reserved parking in the square and a nice plaque. It is held on the first and third Monday

of the month. There is one coming up Monday, August 16.

We attended the Cruise In at Cagney‟s Kitchen on old US 52 at Gumtree Road on

August 9. There were about 20 cars including several OSC members. It was very hot but

we still enjoyed it. The food was good and the prices reasonable. If you get a chance try

to make it next month.

I was thinking about our club and I realized that we have some great thinkers and they

keep coming up with more ways to promote our events and ideas for more events. I want

to encourage everyone to put suggestions in the suggestion box or bring them up at our

meetings. As usual, Ruth Ann will cover some of the items I mentioned above in more detail in

her various reports.

AACA’s Old Salem Chapter monthly meeting will be Tuesday, August 17thth

at the Olympic Family Restaurant, 1541 W. Mountain St. (Hwy 66) between Linville Rd. and Main St., in Kernersville. Dinner starts at 6:00 PM and the business part of the meeting will start at 7:00 PM. There are lots of things to discuss and I know you’ll want to come and see what what’s been happening and find out about our upcoming events too. There’s so you won’t get left out. Don’t forget to invite/bring some of your “old vehicle” friend(s) with you too to enjoy some good food, fun, and fellowship, and share an evening with all your old car friends!

Old Salem Chapter By-Laws Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter

Our Old Salem Chapter By-Laws are finally official! I got the word from AACA Executive

Director, Steve Moskowitz the end of July that they have been filed at National, and at long last,

we have a set of working By-Laws!

I sent out the final version to all of our OSC members. If for some reason, you did not receive it

or could not print it out, either let me know by email or at our next meeting, I will have some

copies with me. If I know ahead of time though, it will help in the number of copies that I will

have to print.

Keri’s Crusade for ALS … Presentations Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter

Our last meeting on July 20 was a very special one … we had our Poker Run/Cruise-In guests in

attendance: Joanie & Harold Brown, founders of Keri‟s Crusade for ALS and Keri‟s Mom and Dad; Kevin &

Nicole from Wendy‟s in Walkertown; Mary Breth, our massage therapist; and Dick Bear, our Pit Stop

Challenge Game owner.

This meeting was our final wrap-up for all our hard work. We very happily presented a check in the

amount of $2,000.00 to Joanie and Harold Brown on behalf of Keri’s

Crusade for ALS! We were all so pleased with the results and the Browns

were very grateful for our participation in this most worthy cause and very

appreciative of all our efforts.

After our check presentation, we also wanted to honor our sponsors and

vendors that helped make it all possible by presenting them with our new

“Honorary Member” plaques, a copy of the NC Region Poker Run/Cruise-In

article and gift certificates. (We would like to thank David Hawks for his

hard work and craftsmanship in making these beautiful plaques!)

Those receiving our Old Salem Chapter “Coffee Pot” Honorary Member

plaques (pictured left to right below) were: Wendy’s of Walkertown,

received by Kevin and Nicole, Mary Breth of Scents & Sensibilities, and

Dick Bear of Market Point Productions. Danny Crouse, our emcee, was

unable to make our meeting due to unforeseen circumstances, but will be

honored at our next meeting.

International Potluck at Marcy Aho’s Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter

Sunday, July 18 was the date our OSC member Marcy Aho invited us to her house for an

International Potluck. It was another one of those very hot days so we were fortunate to be able to stay

indoors and out of the heat, be comfortable, and enjoy all the wonderful food! Marcy has an above ground

pool that she invited us to enjoy also, but it was even too hot to think about that, too!

American and Southern

dishes … and we topped it

off with a wonderfully sweet

watermelon … really hit the spot!

To add to everyone‟s enjoyment, we also had a continuous picture show of all our activities and outings

from this past year. Boy … have we been busy … and had lots of fun! It was also nice to be able to sit down

with everyone and be able to verbally tell them more about some of the pictures as we saw them.

Well, after all the pictures were shown and we pigged out” on all the food, it was time to “waddle” home.

The food was great and what an enjoyable afternoon we all had!

Virginia Private Car Collection Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter

Well, folks, we saw another gooood one! On, Saturday, July 31, our OSC members met for breakfast and

then headed to Ridgeway, VA to see a huge (300+) private car collection. Grover Parks made the

arrangements for our visit … THANK YOU, GROVER! It certainly was well worth our time!

Unfortunately, the weather wasn‟t looking very good so most everybody drove their daily drivers … it was

a shame, because with that many showing up, it would have been a really nice showing of our old cars … oh,

well, can‟t win „em all. We had about 20 of our members attending and some of them had already seen the

collection … and certainly didn‟t mind seeing it again … it is that impressive! Most of us met at Wendy‟s in

Walkertown and then we picked up a few more along the way.

When we arrived and entered, there were a couple of real beauties that “reeled us in” and then … we

opened a door and entered into a much larger space with cars everywhere! Mr. Bowling owns many, many

cars, all in various stages of restoration … from the pristine and show quality, to “getting close,” to “a little

rough,” to “really rough.” His passion is Mercurys along with Fords and a few Chevys, etc., mixed in so we

saw a little bit of everything.

After we oohed and ahhed the first few beauties, we went through the next door and those cars were in

“pretty good” shape but with a lot of dust and some seats needing cleaning, nothing too serious though … still

beautiful cars. We wandered into another room that even had some “oldies” in there like Model A‟s … they

were in pretty rough shape, but in time, will be as beautiful as when they came off the line, I‟m sure.

Walking into another BIG room … this was the largest space and had most of the beautifully restored cars

in it … WOW … what a sight! These were absolutely

beautiful! There were a couple of 1957 Ford convertibles there that really caught my eye … gee, I would have

been real happy in one of them! Oh, well … he‟s not selling, just buying … and buying … and buying …

unbelievable! It was a sight to behold. A lot of these cars were parked so close together, you couldn‟t even

walk between them … they were packed like sardines!

Entering another door took us outside to a covered area where there were still MORE cars parked, all

waiting in line to be cleaned up or restored … they seemed endless. I was told that there was even another area

that I didn‟t make it to „cause I was so busy taking pictures! It was an area behind this building on top of a

small hill that had cars sitting outside waiting their turn. Oh, my!

Just seeing all these old, beautiful cars in one place was amazing in itself, but then I was told that the

collector just started buying these cars only 10 years ago! That is really something … and he is planning on

continuing to buy and also adding more space as it is needed! Guess that means another road trip in the future,

y‟all!

After leaving there, our plan was to go to the Carolina ShineFest in Madison, a moonshine themed street

festival with NASCAR Legend and former moonshiner, Junior Johnson in attendance at his moonshine

distillery, Piedmont Distillers Inc., and lots of food, crafts, music, etc. … but … since it was raining only a few

of us stopped and then didn‟t stay very long „cause it was pretty much of a wash out … it would have been fun

… oh, well, maybe next year.

Kernersville Downtown Cruise-In Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter

For the past few months on the second Saturday of the month, Downtown Kernersville is beginning to

come alive again in the early evening! With the help of Larissa Hess and Deb Mitchell of the Kernersville

Downtown Council, Jim Taylor, and Clarence Lambe and all of our much appreciated OSC volunteers; it has

finally become a “force to be reckoned with!”

Since it started in June, each one is getting

better … better attendance and more

interesting and new things goin‟ on. The June

Cruise-In had some challenges: bad weather

and graduations, but we forged ahead and had

about 60 cars show up … not bad for a first

one! Then in July, it got a whole lot better …

good weather and better attendance … about

130-140 cars … and an ice cream truck …

yoohoo!

Now comes this Saturday, August 14 …

and there are some more surprises in store!

Our OSC member, Joe Huygens, has come up

with some wonderful ideas that will be put

into place … one being a mobile PA system

in their pink International Scout … that‟ll

be a hoot … and stand-up signs advertising

our Cruise-In and the local businesses and

sponsors … oh, yes … I said sponsors! Joe

has arranged for our Cruise-In to have over

$100 worth of Door Prizes given away at

each Cruise-In … how „bout that! What a

guy … thank you, Joe!

We will also have a Registration table set

up this month manned by Marcy Aho. The

purpose of this is for attendees to register so a

database will be available for contact and in

return they will receive a Door Prize ticket.

It will also serve as a good place for our 50/50 tickets and the Charity of the Month Donation Jar.

Another first will be a change in the entertainment venue … musician Clay Howard will be located at

the Baptist Church steps on N. Main and also music on S. Main by our local friend Glen Anderson

“spinning” the Oldies tunes. … Soooo …

Be sure to come and support the Downtown Kernersville Cruise-In this Saturday from 3-8 pm and help

keep things rolling. The proceeds from the 50/50 this month will go to the Shepherd’s Center, a Senior

Assistance Service.

“Date Night 2010” Ruth Ann Ronchetti, Reporter

Just a quick reminder, our “Date Night” for 2010 is coming up on Saturday, August 21 … mark your

calendars … and let‟s bring back some memories!

We will be LEAVING Wendy‟s in Walkertown at 5:00 PM … and, of course … driving our old cars …

and head to Reidsville where we will “dine” at the Sonic Drive-In Restaurant to start jogging our memories.

From there, we will continue on to the Eden Drive-In

Movie Theater for an evening of watching movies

under the stars just the way it used to be way back

when.

I have tried to call the Drive-In to get movie

information but all I get is a recording telling me what

the movies are for this weekend. “Charlie St. Cloud”

is there now and has been since its release a week ago

so this might be the last weekend for it, but “The

Expendables” with Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis,

and Arnold Schwarzenegger is just starting on Friday,

the 16th

, so there is a good chance that will be one of

the movies when we go next week … hope so…that

should be a good one.

And do remember, the evening wouldn‟t be complete without refreshments during showtime so feel free to

bring along whatever you would like to share. Also, remember to bring your folding chairs so we can sit

outside together … and your portable radios to listen to the movies.

AACA Fall 2011 Tour Ruth Ann Ronchetti

For those of you that weren‟t at our last meeting, our OSC members

briefly discussed and voted in favor of hosting an AACA Tour event in

the Fall of 2011. This all came about from a phone call that David Hawks

received from our NC President, Randy Stone, requesting that our Chapter

consider hosting a Fall tour event since we have a lot of great Outings. Out

of 16 North Carolina Region Chapters, we are one out of three that never

host an AACA event so it was time to give it some consideration.

No details have been decided on yet other than the vote to do it

sometime in the Fall of 2011. We were asked to think about doing a 2-3 day tour to start off with to make it a

little easier. There are a lot of interesting places here in our area that we could include and it should be pretty

easy deciding on what places to visit.

So, okay everyone, here is your chance to get involved in some

committee work (and fun, too) and help plan this exciting new adventure

for our Chapter. It is exciting and very satisfying to see a plan come

together after actively taking part in its planning … soooo … put your

“thinking caps” on and let‟s come up with some great ideas!

Within the next few months, we hope to have our NC Region President,

Randy Stone, join us at one of our monthly meetings to talk to us about this

undertaking … please try to attend the monthly meetings anyway but

especially when he comes, it will be very informative … I will let you know ahead of time.

Also, keeping this in mind, it would be very helpful for all of you if sometime within the next year you try

to attend one of our AACA Region, Divisional, or National Tours so you can see how it‟s run and what‟s

involved in the process … and IT IS ALSO A WHOLE LOTTA FUN!

Personal Notes and Rumors

Please keep Alma Alley (and James) on your prayer list. Alma has been under the weather again for several weeks but is doing much better and starting to get out and about again. We hope you continue to improve and are as good as new real soon.

Please keep Gerri Dee Crummet (and Bob) on your prayer list. Gerri Dee made it through another major surgery a couple of weeks ago and is back home recovering. The healing process is very trying and difficult. We wish you the best and are looking forward to seeing you get some relief soon. Please let us know if there’s anything we can do to help while you’re getting well.

Please keep Ann Gregory (and Dennis) to your prayer list. Ann had knee surgery a couple of weeks ago and is at home recovering. We hope your knee heals quickly and you’re ready to walk and run, without pain, anywhere you want to go real soon.

Please keep Bill Hutchins (and Lee) on your prayer list. Bill spent a few days in the hospital for a few days recently but is back home again and doing better. We hope you feel great real soon so you can get up and around do the things you want to do.

Please add Brenda Holloway (and Dickie Speas) to your prayer list. Brenda some surgery a couple of weeks ago and we hope you have a quick recovery and can join us in some fun activities real soon.

Please keep Fran Powers (and Richie) on your prayer list. Fran had some major surgery a few weeks ago and is back home recovering too. She seems to be doing very well and will hopefully continue until she is better than new. Hope to see you again soon too!

Please keep Dick Strohmeier. He’s graduated to walking without a cane now and that’s great! We hope that things keep going well for you!

Please add Elton Hughes to your prayer list. Elton is a friend of the Old Salem Chapter and is scheduled for surgery on Aug. 20.

Old Salem Chapter Members of the Month

August 2010

Ronnie & Inez Day”

Ron & Inez met in 1964 and neither had automobiles at that time. Ron would come to her house which

was only about three miles. In 1966 Ron got his first automobile, which was a 1953 Ford at a cost of

$240.00. They dated in this car for several months before he joined the Air Force. After returning from the

Air Force in 1970, they continued dating and were married on August 27, 1972. Ron had just purchased an

“old” 1954 Chevrolet a few weeks before their wedding, although he had a 1967 Chevrolet for his daily

driver.

On their wedding day, Ron‟s „67 Chevrolet would not start so he had to drive his „54 Chevrolet to the

church as everyone else had already left. As Ron and Inez prepared to leave the church following the

wedding, Inez stepped out onto the church porch and seen the 1954 Chevrolet parked at the end of the

sidewalk, ready to start their first trip and “Man & Wife”. Ron did have some other important things on his

mind and had forgotten to mention this little fact, which resulted in their very first “major discussion”. This

is the same 1954 Chevrolet that Ron recently restored and Inez is now as proud of it as he is.

Ron and Inez have raised four children, Amber, Ben, Chris and Elaine. They have lived at their home

in Kernersville, for 31 years and now have two granddaughters, Rachel, age sixteen months, and Danielle,

age one month. Ron and Inez have had the „54 Chevrolet for 38 years, the ‟49 Ford for 23 years, the „54

Ford for 22 years and the „54 Ford truck for 11 years. In his own words, he is not likely to sell anything.

Ron and Inez have been members of the Old Salem Chapter for approximately eighteen months and state

that “this is one of the most active, enthusiastic organizations that they have ever been involved with,... We

look forward to hosting one of the activities for our members soon”.

Ron says “I will always be grateful to Jim Taylor for inviting me—not once, but several times. This

Old Salem Chapter is very special to us”.

Part of the “Day Collection”
