Corning Museum of Glass VisitThirteen student members participated in the excursion from different departments: Electrical, Materials Science and Chemical Engineering. The museum is nearly 215 miles (4 hours) from Lehigh University. We had two tour guides who highlighted the exhibitions, shared experiences of working for Corning as well as tailored our guided tour towards our optical engineering background.

Corning Museum of Glass

Our visit to the museum would have been incomplete without actually experiencing glass blowing first hand and we got just that- an impressive demonstration of glass blowing by a gaffer i.e. a master glassblower.

The museum has been divided into different sections each covering a different era showcasing how glass manufacturing techniques has evolved over time. The history section contained glass from many ancient civilizations like the Egyptian, Roman, Greek etc. A section was also devoted to glass from different geographical regions like India, China, France , Japan etc.

A special collection of glass from India was on display at the time of our visit. The collection was christened Maharaja which means the King of Kings. It had on display the glass from the Indian royalty in the form of thrones, pieces of furniture chandeliers all made of glass.

The Glass Innovation Gallery displayed very informatively approaches and challenges related to laminate glass, ceramics, float glass, lenses, and fiber optics. A narrative story of the invention of fiber optics and its evolution was captured in a very captivating video presentation which was being played at the museum.
