The International Year of Light 2015 marked 9 successful years for SPIE

Student Chapter of University of Calcutta. The year had been quite eventful

with loads of activities like the IYL Photo contest, outreach programs,

seminars, technical model competition and many more. By mid-year, SPIE

Student Chapter activities were merged with the activities of Optical Society of

America (OSA) and Optical Society of India (OSI) Student Chapters‟, the

latter two chapters being newly formed in this Department of Applied Optics

and Photonics. All student chapters‟ activities are jointly conducted since then.

Moreover, the SPIE team also planned and successfully executed Departmental

seminars on light-based technologies involving our faculty members,

Alumnus, Research Scholars and students of the Department to exchange and

enhance important and intuitive ideas and knowledge in Optics and Photonics.

Election of Office Bearers:

The chapter members and the faculty advisor elected the office bearers through

the meeting held on 31st March, 2016. The new office bearers for the year

2015-16 are as follows:

SPIE Student Chapter Activities: 2016

1. Seminar on “Mueller Matrix Polarimeter With Diattenuation

Error Calibration Approach” by Kaustav Bhattacharya, on

The SPIE student chapter activity of the year 2015 started with a seminar

presentation by Mr. Kaustav Bhattacharya, Research Student at Utsunomiya

University, Japan, on 7th

January 2015 in this Department of Applied Optics

and Photonics, University of Calcutta.

2. IYL Photo Contest:

A photography contest on the focal theme “Light” was organized.

Announcement for this event had been circulated among all photographic clubs

and Academic Institutes and advertised in the networking sites like

“Facebook‟‟. Prize money was awarded to the best photographs judged by a

panel of experts. The award ceremony was held on 21st February 2015,

coinciding with the second day of the Optical Society of India’s Golden

Jubilee Conference, International Conference on Optics and Photonics

(ICOP 2015). The photographs were displayed during the conference to spread

awareness about the IYL Photo contest activity. The 1st, 2

nd and 3

rd winners of

the Photo contest were Raju Ghosh, Shivu K and Biswajit Patra

respectively. They were awarded prize money of Rs.10000, Rs. 5000 and Rs.

3000 respectively.

3. SPIE Student Chapter promotion during International

Conference on Optics and Photonics (ICOP 2015) from 20th

-

22nd

Feb

A SPIE Student Chapter stall was arranged during ICOP 2015 for promoting

the Student Chapter and its activities. The members of SPIE Student Chapter

took active participation in organizing and volunteering the Conference.

4. Outreach activity at Anandaghar, Kolkata, 3rd

May 2015:

A team of 12 SPIE Student Chapter members along with our faculty advisor

Dr. Kallol Bhattacharya, visited Anandaghar, which is an NGO operating in

Kolkata, dealing with HIV affected and spastic children. Most of the children

who took part in our outreach program were school students in their

secondary and higher secondary level. Our SPIE members demonstrated basic

fundamental optical models to the students and they showed keen interest in

understanding the models. Small gifts were distributed to the children and

they were extremely happy. They liked the program so much that their leading

organizer Mr. Sumanta Singha Roy had requested our SPIE team for another

such program. We are happy to inform, that our SPIE team had once again

visited Anandaghar for an outreach activity in January 2016, the details of

which shall be report in the next annual report.

5. Outreach activity at Mc. Williams High Secondary School,

Alipurduar, North Bengal; 23rd

May 2015

A team of 20 SPIE Student Chapter members along with our faculty advisor

Dr. Kallol Bhattacharya visited Mc. Williams High Secondary School at

Alipurduar on 23rd

may, 2015 at a distance 857km from Kolkata. Two of our

members Souvik Bose and Aritra Roy jointly presented seminars on Adaptive

Optics. As usual our optical models were demonstrated.

6. Participation in SPIE Annual meeting-2015

Our SPIE student chapter President Ms. Anusmita Mazumdar participated in

the SPIE annual meeting held at San Diego, USA during August 2015. She had

presented the activities of SPIE Student Chapter through poster presentation

and had an opportunity to interact and network with Office bearers of SPIE

student chapters from different Institutes all across the globe.

7. Departmental Seminar on “Excimer Laser: Fundamentals

and Applications” by Srinjoy Maiti, on 23rd

November 2015

The 1

st Departmental seminar was presented by Mr. Srinjoy Maiti, Research

Scholar at Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, University of Calcutta

on 23rd

November 2015. The event was successful with the presence of a large

audience and motivated other students for the consecutive departmental

seminars. A certificate was handed over to the speaker by the Head of the

Department, Dr. Rajib Chakraborty.

8. Technical Model Competition, 4th

December 2015

A technical model competition was conducted among the students of the

Department to implement technical growth of the SPIE student chapter and to

involve more students in the chapter activities. Four technical models were

proposed by four teams. The „Infinity Mirror‟ or „Infinite Light Well‟ was

declared to be the best by the judges.

Infinity Mirror or Infinite Light Well. The phenomenon is based on multiple

reflections between two parallel mirrors leading to depth perception.

9. Departmental Seminar on “Lasers in Precise Circuit

Fabrication and Cutting” by Srinjoy Maiti, on 23rd

November

2015

Mr. Chandan Sengupta, Research Scholar at Department of Applied Optics and

Photonics, University of Calcutta, presented the 2nd

10. Outreach activity at Bhairab Ganguly College, Kolkata on

11th

December 2015

Dr. Kallol Bhattacharya, Faculty Advisor of SPIE Student Chapter, University

of Calcutta, was invited by the Head (Principal) of Bhairab Ganguly College,

Belghoria, Kolkata, to conduct an activity with the undergraduate students of

the college for spreading awareness about Optics and Photonics among them.

In response to this invitation, Dr. Kallol Bhattacharya along with 12 SPIE

student members visited Bhairab Ganguly College on 11th December to

conduct an outreach program. The program comprised of three sessions. First,

the program started with a presentation by Dr. Kallol Bhattacharya on a topic

entitled “International Year of Light and Light Based Technologies 2015”. A

perfect topic to conclude 2015: International Year of Light! This was followed

by a Quiz competition in which 5 teams took part and the winning team was

awarded a trophy by Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). The final session

comprised of a technical model demonstration where various optical models

were illustrated. Both students and faculties took much interest and were

highly engrossed with its understanding and corresponding discussions, which

marked the success of our technical session.
