PRESIDENT’S WORD
With the establishment of new benchmarks through the years, SPIE Student Chapter at
Acharya Narendra Dev College has proved to be a huge success. From a group of handful of
students to a family of young and innovative minds, SPIE at ANDC has always believed in
unanimity and developing young talents to come forward and work for its ultimate focus
“Easing and promoting optics and photonics”. Since 2010, these 4 years have helped us
mark various milestones in the history of SPIE Chapter ANDC, as a result we have grown
collectively and are still proceeding towards new horizons of achievements. As being the
president of the SPIE Chapter at ANDC, I feel elated and honoured to hereby showcase our
chapter‟s achievements in this fourth consecutive Annual Report of SPIE Student Chapter
University of Delhi at ANDC for the academic year 2013-14.
This year has been quite fun filled with its inception from the workshop on “Innovative
Pedagogies for modern optics and photonics” which was a two-day workshop with first
day dedicated to demonstration of geometrical optics kit and low cost fibre optics kit to the
student attendees, whereas the second day was planned for hands- on wave optics related
experiments using low cost CCDs and also we were able to reconstruct a 3D hologram also.
Some of our chapter members attended and went for poster presentation in the “IISER
Kolkata Winter School 2013”. Then in February, few of our chapter member went to
CUSAT Cochin, Kerala to attend “Annual Photonics Workshop” on the occasion of
National Science Day. This year in February, Mohd. Aiman Ali Raza, our student member
made his mark in SPIE's one of the most prestigious and biggest conferences “Photonics
West” held in San Francisco, CA, USA.
Further in March, we were graced with the presence of “Dr. Philip. H. Stahl, The President
of SPIE” who gave a remarkable presentation on the development of “James Webb Space
Telescope”. His visit to our college filled us with a whole new enthusiasm and urge to work
and explore even more.
Our chapter triumphed so far under the supervision of one person, our guide Dr. Amit Garg.
It will be futile without mentioning his efforts behind our success. I respect his striving hard
work for our chapter in its continued endeavour. All of us have been fortunate to be able to
explore the depth of optics and photonics under his guidance. Lastly, my good wishes to all
my peers and juniors who are rigorously working for the society to elevate its position every
successive year and hope that this journey of fathoms of success is longstanding.

WORKSHOP ON INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGIES FOR
MODERN OPTICS AND PHOTONICS
This workshop which was conducted by our SPIE student members, Faculty Adviser and
external resource person on 10-11 October 2013 to keep ourselves intact with developments
in the field of optics and photonics. It began with demonstrations of “Geometrical Optics
kit” and “Low cost Fibre Optics kit” to new aspiring students who had signed up for SPIE
Membership. Furthermore, all the students were given a chance to work hands-on the
experimental setup of “Analysing Diffraction and Interference patterns using low cost
CCD’s “and “Studying the properties of light through polarisation”. This allowed
students to probe into the depth of these concepts. Apart from this, a workshop on
“Reconstruction of a 3D hologram” was also scheduled on these days. Reconstruction of a
3D hologram was completely fascinating concepts for the students, which in fact attracted
many students and made this two-day workshop succeed in its motive to promote optics
through a more advanced vision.
