Structural Dynamics engineered and manufactured the truss and spider system for the glass façade of the New International Bangkok Airport. This is one of the world’s largest glass façades at around 1km long and 40m high.

NOTE: the analytic load is for an individual leg of spider, each leg receives the equivalent load.Yield Stress = 241 Mpa. Allowable Stress = 0.7 x 241=168.7 MPa.

P1: Allowable negative wind pressure 2300N

P2: Allowable wind pressure 2500N

P3: Spider allowable dead load 1300N

P4: Rotule allowable dead load 1262N

Spider hole configuration

The 4-leg spider has 2 `free’ holes, and 2 slotted holes.

The two slotted holes on the bottom support the dead load (self weight from the glass below), positive wind load and negative wind load.

The two free holes on the top are attached to the 2 pieces of glass that are above the spider, supporting positive and negative wind loads.
