My Russian Renaissance! One of the best parts of being a Spice Coordinator is

that you get the opportunity to try things that you may never have considered booking as a member. When I heard I was leading a trip to Moscow & St

Petersburg, my initial thought was “why would I want to go to Russia!” My memories were of the cold war

and of my father returning from a business trip in the 1970’s with blurred photographs taken through a car

window for fear of being arrested by the KGB! My experience last week could not have been more

different. A lot has changed. The carnival atmosphere of Gorky Park on Saturday

night with trendy young Russians on rollerblades and skateboards while a rock band played by the river –

seemed more akin to Central Park, New York! The Kremlin treasures, the Palaces and Cathedrals of

St Petersburg. The staggering collection of the Hermitage. Everything we saw was beyond

spectacular .. quite a revelation! We all know that not everything is great in Putin’s Russia, but to discover it as a tourist with a lovely

group of like minded Spice members was a treat. Also a reminder to me of the pleasure of using Spice membership to access totally new and different

opportunities and the delight as to where this leads. You can see a selection of my photos of the trip HERE

It’s a perfect experience for anyone who melts at the sound of a steam whistle. Also, an interesting

insight into how this busy little narrow gauge line is run so efficiently by its loyal band of volunteers.
