Stand Up Paddle Boarding Date: Saturday 1st June 2013 Place: Edgbaston Reservoir, Icknield Port Road (B16 0AA) 10.00am - 12.30pm Cost: £15 Member, £18 Guest Want to try one of the fastest growing water sports in the world? Then why not give stand up paddle boarding a go - It's easy to learn and fun to do. Stand up Paddling, or SUP's is similar to surfing except the paddler uses a longer canoe type paddle to move through the water while standing on a large style surfboard. Contrary to surfing however, stand up paddling doesn't require an ocean or waves. Stand Up Paddle Surfing isn't that hard to learn as unlike normal surfing you can learn to do it on almost any type of water. To start with you will find standing up on the board and paddling will be the trickiest part. If you already surf then the wave riding part should be pretty familiar, except that you will be riding for longer and more often! SUP's is for all outdoors or water sport fan, looking for something different. There are full changing facilities with showers at the centre, facilities for making hot drinks and as always spectators are welcome.

Tank Battle Experience Date: Sunday 2nd June 2013 Place: Lutterworth, Leicestershire (LE17 6NW)10am to approx 12noon session Time: 10am to 12pm Cost: £89 Member, £95 Guest This event has had great feedback. We have booked 4 tanks, each of which take a crew of 3 Spice members who will be with their tank throughout (so no waiting around on this one!). We start with a practice session, where we put the tank through it’s paces on the 1 mile track and firing range. We will alternate the 3 positions in the tank so that each person gets a chance to drive, a chance to load the gun and a chance to fire. The gun is adapted to fire paintball ammunition, and can be fired with the hatch up or down. In battle, of course the hatch has to be down and aimed by periscope. After the practice, the four tanks will do battle, with each tank attempting to out manoeuvre and “knock out” the others with their huge, paintball firing guns. For this part, teams will not be able to switch positions, so you will need to decide between you or toss a coin to decide who will drive, who will load and who will fire. Extra notes: The organisers sell a disc of photos for an additional £15 (sent by post). There is a Kiosk that sells a small range of hot food (burgers etc) and tea, coffee, coke etc.

If you take a car, there will be a parking fee. Otherwise you may wish to use the train. The Cosford Airshow is an amazing event and this 75th Anniversary Show promises to be better than ever. This year, Spice have gone one better. We have secured time with one of the organisers (and former Special Forces Pilot), Simon Footer who will explain the show to us and introduce us to people, pilots and places that the general public don’t see. How the day will work: We will send you an entrance ticket so that you can enter the show as early as you like (gates open around 9am – we’ll confirm this). The flying displays usually start at around 12 noon but we strongly advise getting in well before this as the traffic will get heavier and heavier as the morning goes on. We meet as a group at 2pm (location to be confirmed). After our talk & tour, we have free time to enjoy the airshow either individually or as a group. Simon’s Talk & Tour: Exactly what Simon Footer can do with us will depend on the demands of the day. However, he has promised us an insight into how he briefs the fast jet pilots for the show and some background to how the show is set up and run. He also hopes to arrange for us to access to the aircrew enclosure where we can meet the pilots and have a drink and relax. The Airshow: The 2013 Air Show brings together a wide variety of aircraft including the Royal Air Force, aerobatic displays, vintage aircraft and many more. Enjoy expanded interactive aircraft and military displays, arena demonstrations, visit the fair ground and shopping areas for craft and memorabilia. The 2013 show will celebrate three important Anniversaries: The 75th Anniversary of Royal Air Force Cosford, the 75th Anniversary of the Spitfire entering RAF service and 40 years of RAF service from the Jaguar jet aircraft. Our Host, Simon Footer MBE: Simon is now regional director of RAF Benevolent Fund following 33 years of RAF service, predominantly as a special forces Hercules pilot and latterly as a flying instructor. He commanded LXX Squadron based at RAF Lyneham during the build up of the Afghanistan operation and continues to fly on an occasional basis as a reservist instructor at RAF Cosford. He is on the organising committee for Cosford Airshow and other large RAFBF Events.

My guiding essentials have been good design, colour and workmanship. What a joy these old things are to live with, each piece made by the hand of a craftsman, each has feeling that no machine could ever attain. Though each room of the house is filled with items of interest, each has a restful atmosphere. They are rooms to linger in – rooms one must return to – rooms where there is always something to discover – rooms which inspire a thousand fancies’. His motto was ‘let nothing perish’, and his life was dedicated to finding, restoring and enjoying objects of beauty, both every day and extraordinary. Did you know that there is only one place in the world where two rivers start at the same point and finish at the same point? Well those two rivers, the Severn and the Wye both start in the mountains of mid Wales, Plynlimon (the highest point of the Cambrian Mountains) and both finish at the Severn Estuary. So over the next twelve months, Alan Roberts is going to be running a number of walking weekends, seven to be exact that will follow the River Wye from its source all the way to the Severn Estuary. Why the River Wye? Well there are a number of highlights on route; the mountains of mid wales not only offer stunning scenery, but the chance to see red kite, buzzards and peregrine falcons, there are the Penddal Rock Rapids, Gilfach Medieval Longhouse, the beautiful town of Hay on Wye (also famous for its book shop) that nestles at the foot of the Black Mountain, Capler Camp Hillfort, Goodrich Castle, Symonds Yat and the Yat Rock viewpoint, Tintern Abbey and finally to Chepstow and the Castle.
