My guiding essentials have been good design, colour and workmanship. What a joy these old things are to live with, each piece made by the hand of a craftsman, each has feeling that no machine could ever attain. They are rooms to linger in – rooms one must return to – rooms where there is always something to discover – rooms which inspire a thousand fancies’. His motto was ‘let nothing perish’, and his life was dedicated to finding, restoring and enjoying objects of beauty, both every day and extraordinary. Did you know that there is only one place in the world where two rivers start at the same point and finish at the same point? Well those two rivers, the Severn and the Wye both start in the mountains of mid Wales, Plynlimon (the highest point of the Cambrian Mountains) and both finish at the Severn Estuary. So over the next twelve months, Alan Roberts is going to be running a number of walking weekends, seven to be exact that will follow the River Wye from its source all the way to the Severn Estuary. Why the River Wye? Well there are a number of highlights on route; the mountains of mid wales not only offer stunning scenery, but the chance to see red kite, buzzards and peregrine falcons, there are the Penddal Rock Rapids, Gilfach Medieval Longhouse, the beautiful town of Hay on Wye (also famous for its book shop) that nestles at the foot of the Black Mountain, Capler Camp Hillfort, Goodrich Castle, Symonds Yat and the Yat Rock viewpoint, Tintern Abbey and finally to Chepstow and the Castle.

The Matthew Fish And Chip Supper Cruise Date: Saturday 6th July 2013 Place: Great Western Dockyard, Gas Ferry Road (BS1 6TY) Meet: SS Great Britain entrance by 6.45pm Cost: £26.50 Member, £29.50 Guest Includes: 2 Hour Voyage On The Matthew, Fish & Chip Supper On-board Extras: Drinks from Ships Bar Moored next to the SS Great Britain, the replica of the Matthew is one of Bristol’s best known maritime landmarks. This evening we will be welcomed on board and taken for a 2 hour trip around the floating harbour, stopping to enjoy a fish and chip supper along the way. This is a superb opportunity to experience how life would have been aboard ship explorer John Cabot in 15th century. Over 500 years ago John Cabot and his crew set sail for Asia aboard the original Matthew hoping to trade goods and commodities with the people who lived there. However, he finally arrived on the coast of Newfoundland and therefore was the original discoverer of North America, not Christopher Columbus as most people believe. Today the replica of the Matthew sits proudly in Bristol harbour for all to see. In 1997 the replica Matthew followed the same course as John Cabot in 1497 and sailed across to Newfoundland. It carried the same number of crew members as the original and took the same and used the same amount of time to complete the crossing. Our trip leaves sets sail at 7.00pm prompt and will circumnavigate the floating harbour with a couple of stops. There is a bar aboard the ship (payable extra) and included in the price is a fish and chip supper. We will be on the water for about 2 hours before returning back to the starting point. Please arrive by 6.45pm at the entrance to the SS Great Britain. There is a pay and display public car-park at this site which can be used for this event. If we have enough bookings for this event we will end up with exclusive use of the ship for SPICE on the evening, otherwise we will be sharing with members of the public. Included: 2 hour harbour cruise aboard the Matthew, fish and chip supper.

You are welcome to stay for the whole afternoon if you wish, but this way, you know when you will be on the range rather than having to wait your turn. With extremely tight firearms laws, it is rare to find opportunities for our members to fire live ammunition. However, under close expert supervision, here’s an opportunity to fire Western Style Lever Action Rifles (like John Wayne used!). They are 357 Magnum Calibre, but recoil is similar to that of a full power spring action air rifle, so you don’t need to be built like a cowboy! After booking in (bring photo ID such as passport or driving licence), we will have a safety talk including range rules and weapon handling safety and etiquette. We’ll then be introduced to our weapons and have time honing our skills on the range. There will be 4 instructors, so 4 people can be shooting at any one time, as the rules dictate that tuition has to be 1:1 when you are using this class of rifle. Depending on what is going on on the day, we should be able to meet other club members and learn about their firearms. Afterwards, we can relax in the club bar. Important Since this event is run in line with current firearms legislation please see our web site for some important requirements before booking & directions.

We are taken down a steep bank into woodland and around the trees, up and down the bank in the wood and through the hollows and humps. You will go around the wood 4 times in different directions before heading out of the wood, back cross the pasture and then dive through the cones before arriving back at the start. We plan to tackle two of the highest peaks in Southern Snowdonia. Sunday’s walk takes us to the summit of the little known craggy peak of Rhobell Fawr (Big Saddle) which is a shorter 8 miles. I am sure you can understand that with trips into the mountain environment no plans can be 'written in stone' due to the many variables such as weather, but this area has many alternative routes if the conditions dictate. You will need a reasonable level of fitness to enjoy this weekend as the walks involve some steep scrambles. The weekend takes place at a secluded 16th Century stone farmhouse in the heart of the Welsh countryside with breathtaking views over the Cambrian mountains. This popular retreat; exclusive to Spice for the weekend, is the home of your hosts Barry and Sonya, who have been looking after Spice members for over eighteen years. The cottage sits in its own eight acres of private grounds with large gardens, sculptures, wild life pools and a small menagerie of cats, dogs, sheep and birds. Powys (LD7 1LW) 1.45pm for 2pm Tour Cost: £10 Member, £12 Guest Includes: 1.5 Hour Private Group Tour, Spice Coordinator, VAT I realise that this is a bit of a drive for most of us, but is an opportunity to visit somewhere really unusual and unique in the UK. Sited at the top of a hill, the observatory offers outstanding panoramas in all directions, and a clear 360 degree horizon. It is the only organisation in the UK addressing the hazard of Near Earth Objects. NEOs are asteroids and comets that come close to, and sometimes collide with the Earth. Such impacts can have devastating effects – they have in the past and will in the future unless we use available technologies to prevent them. The aim of Spaceguard is to develop and maintain a world-class facility for astronomical research and science education. It is privately owned and funded mainly through visitors like us. Our Tour: We have booked a tour of approx 1½ hours with the centre owners. They will explain the importance of the work they do and how they do it. We will see a range of telescopes including a 13” apochromatic refractor. There is also a planetarium for us to experience and the Robotic Telescope Control Centre. Note the centre has a shop but no cafe, so we will probably drive to a local town afterwards for refreshments.

Gardens, Grottos + Cream Tea Monmouth Date: Sunday 21st July 2013 Place: Caerwent, Monmouthshire, Wales (NP26 5AH)

Dewstow Gardens - Main Entrance at 1:30pm Cost: £16 Member, £18 Guest Includes: Entrance to Dewstow Gardens,

Cream Tea, Service, Spice Host Dewstow Gardens is one of the least known of all the attractions in southern Wales, but also one of the most interesting. The gardens are a wonderful place to wander in themselves, with beautifully landscaped paths and decorative beds, artificial waterfalls and man-made pools, but it's Dewstow Grottoes that make this place really fascinating. The Grottoes are artificial - no natural limestone caves here- but they are no less attractive for it. The tunnels, archways, and sunken fern gardens were built in the Victorian era and completely buried around the time of the second world war. It's only over the last few years that excavation and restoration has revealed them again. Today we’ll meander through the gardens and grottos seeing the Canary Island date palm and black bamboo in The Tropical House, the enticing network of streams criss-crossed with stepping-stones in the Lion Grotto, the spectacular tunnels and archways, creeping with ivy and cascades of blue ceonathus and the duck ponds and chains of lily ponds. After our wander we’ll go to the Coffee Cabin for some cream tea.

Around 40 local artists from Bristol and the region have also been selected to design a Gromit for the trail. A broad range of creative and colourful designs were chosen with entries depicting nature and Bristol themes. We start our day at the Spyglass BBQ and Grill to ensure we have enough sustenance for the trail! You know its summer when Spyglass is open and here we will have a 1 course meal with grill choices such as BBQ chicken skewers, grilled asparagus and halloumi, spyglass burger, and grilled salmon steak. After our meal, we’ll amble along the Gromit trail, seeing if we can spot all 70 Gromits’ and guess who the artists are. It’s bound to be an unusual, fun and (hopefully) sunny day out!
