Page 1: Speech Outline on Electives

Introduction: Attention:When you first came to college, were you frustrated that you had to take countless gen eds before you could begin taking classes for your major? If you thought yes, you aren’t alone.Importance: Students are becoming increasingly frustrated with the excess gen eds that they have to take in college.Credibility:. I have asked many other students how they feel about gen eds, and a majority either wish there were a significant amount less required or none at all.Preview: General Education classes should be an option rather than a requirement because many of the classes are unrelated to what a student wants to do in their life, necessary fundamentals are covered before college

Body:I. Many of the classes students take are unrelated to what a student wants to do in their life. A. Often a student will never use that information again! 1. For example, my freshman year in college I took geology. As of yet, I still haven’t found a reason as to how rocks can be applied to finance and banking. B. Taking classes so completely irrelevant demotivates students. 1. I looked at my advising sheet, and at UNO, gen eds account for over 50 credit hours! 2. So many gen eds could cause students to become impatient and lose sight of their goals. C. Imagine all of the money that is spent on these unrelated classes. 1. Students are wasting money on these classes with information that they will never use again.

(Transition : Now that I have told you how gen eds are often unrelated to what a student may want to do in their life, let’s talk about how necessary fundamentals are already covered before college .)

II. The necessary fundamentals, that colleges require in their gen eds, are already covered in high school . A. Students spend 12 years learning fundamentals such as English, Science, and Math. 1. As a result, many of these classes are repeated in college.

2. College is meant for specialized education, retaking fundamentals only B. Students should have already been tested on knowledge in fundamentals. 1. Many colleges, such as UNO, require certain ACT scores. 2. If students have sufficient ACT scores, they have an adequate knowledge of fundamentals and should not have to retake them.

Conclusion: Sign post and Summary: In conclusion, I have told you how gen eds are often completely unrelated to what a student wants to do with their life and how necessary fundamentals are already covered in highschool.Importance: Students can take electives in college. It would make more sense to make gen eds an option that can be taken in electives rather than a requirement.Memorable Ending: You shouldn’t have to feel the frustration of taking unnecessary classes that are required.
