Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences’ Pre-Approved Related Courses
In addition to major area courses, the Department requires that students complete twelve credits of 2000 level or
above courses taken outside of the Department that are related to the major. These do not have to be from the
same department. Ordinarily courses from Allied Health, Anthropology, Human Development and Family
Studies, Linguistics, Psychology, Sociology, Education, and Biology are selected for related coursework. The
following is a list of pre-approved related courses. They are broken down into twelve categories based on areas
of interest. The topical areas are: Biological Development, Cognitive Studies, Health, Psychological
Development, Counseling, Research, Language, Communication, Cultural Studies, Gender and Sexuality and
Aging. Taking courses from an area of interest does not constitute expert knowledge in that area and will not be
signified on the transcript in the way of a concentration or minor.
Other courses may be used to satisfy this requirement with permission of the advisor. Prerequisites have been
indicated; however, these are subject to change and students are responsible for checking with the offering
department for details.
