Alumni Matters

The RGS Chapter

The RGS Chapter has been a supporter of RGS and has assisted the school in many ways: close collaboration in school activities, organising of workshops and social events to promote alumni networking to encourage Rafflesians to cherish their unique identity as a member of the RGS community. Among the many activities, the RGS Connect Tea, a tea for alumni, was held at the Evelyn Norris Hall on 17 November 2012 with the theme – “Nostalgia” – and ladies were encouraged to come dressed in House colours. Current RGS students brought the 122 alumni, who attended the tea on a tour of the school premises. There was great excitement as the

Page 14: Speech Day Report 2012/2013

alumni reconnected with their classmates and former principals Mrs KS Chee, Mrs Deborah Tan and veteran teachers Mrs Ummu Choo and Mr Goh Kin Soon. A special memento of an old photo of RGS was presented to the Guest-of-Honour, Mr Foo, who was retiring after having operated the drinks stall at the RGS canteen for 65 years.

To support the school in broadening the categories of awards given out to students on RGS Speech Day, several cohorts have instituted annual awards that emphasise the importance of recognising students who demonstrate exemplary leadership or communication skills. The ‘RGS Chapter’, ‘Heart of Gold’ and ‘Sisters at Heart’ awards are aimed at encouraging pupils to develop character values such as exemplary care and consideration for others.

RGS Connect

RGS Connect is an alumni initiated online portal for alumni networking and alumni-student mentoring. RGS students can connect with alumni through the portal to gain alumni insights on higher education, career information and job shadowing opportunities. RGS Connect allows connected alumni to help contribute and support school-organised events such as the sourcing of speakers for assembly talks, career fairs, and school-wide events.

Parents for RGS Association (PRGS)

2012

PRGS 10th Exco continues to oversee the running of the “Breakfast Dialogue with Principal(s)” for Year 3 parents as well as the “Nurturing The Highly Able Child” Forum in September. In October, a “Photography Workshop cum Gardens by the Bay Outing” and the “Transition to RI(JC)” talk were also organised. An “Awaken the Dragon” parent-daughter bonding sculpture workshop was also held in the same month for parents to further bond with their daughters. “Reporting Day for Year 1s” on 20 December saw several of our PRGS members providing

support by distributing our “Year 1 Registration Day Welcome Pack“ to parents of the new cohort and mingling with them to offer any assistance they may need.

2013

2013 began with PRGS co-organising the “Orientation Tea for Year 1 parents” on 11 January to welcome the parents of the new cohort. The “Helping your daughter’s transition to secondary school” session aimed to help parents understand some of the common transitional problems so that they may better guide the girls to integrate easily into secondary school life. Similarly, Philosophy, Humanities and Maths/Science seminars were also arranged to provide parents with some understanding of the approaches used in learning these subjects.

Formed on 26 February 2003, PRGS Association turned 10 years old this year. To commemorate this milestone, PRGS held its 10th Anniversary celebration on 2 March at the School Hall attended by about 150 people comprising fellow PRGS members, past/present PRGS Exco members as well as past/present RGS Senior Management, Management & Administrative staff.

PRGS 11th Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on 23 March. Our new 11th Executive Committee (Exco) team, comprising parents from all four levels was nominated and elected into office for a term of 1-year wef 23 March.

The new 11th Exco has since organised four “Parents’ Breakfast Dialogues with Principal(s)”sessions, each for one level of cohort. Now in its 4th year running, these dialogues provide an insight into the school’s policies and various programs and serve as a effective platform for two-way informal communications between the school and the parents.

In conjunction with the School’s envisioning and strategic planning exercise stemming in part from the school‘s new campus development plans, PRGS held two special focus group discussions with parents regarding “The RGS Experience” on 17 May.

At the RGS Open House on 25 May, PRGS Exco members were on the panel of speakers for the “In Conversation with Parents of RGS Students” sessions to share their thoughts and experiences.

For the school’s Sports Day on 31 May, several PRGS members participated in the games and events and this year, PRGS also provided supervisory support for the School’s Swim carnival on 2 July.

For this year’s Racial Harmony Day (18 July) theme “ Celebrating Singapore”, PRGS was involved in the demonstration of various traditional art and craft works and sampling of traditional food snacks.

PRGS has through the years been issuing PRGS Awards to students who have shown exemplary behavior and great compassion, as evidenced by their level of community involvement. A panel from PRGS Exco conducted an interview with the shortlisted candidates on 26 July to select deserving recipients of this PRGS Award for RGS Speech Day 2013.

Our talk series kicked off on 27 July with the topic “ Navigating the Teenage Years” by co-founder and director at Centre for Fathering, Mr Edwin Choy. Dr Foo Fung Fong (Family Life Educator and Trainer) and Mr Alan Yip (Mind Edge) were also engaged to speak on “Nurturing the Leader in your Girl” on 23 August and “Gender Intelligence” on 21 September respectively.

Page 16: Speech Day Report 2012/2013

“Mentoring Teens in the Internet Age”, a Cyber wellness talk by speaker Mr. Anthony Yeong (resident counselor at TOUCH Cyber Wellness) was also held on 3 August.

The annual Teachers’ Day Appreciation Lunch, hosted by PRGS, and generously sponsored and contributed by the RGS parents community is scheduled on 30 August. PRGS continues to assist the school in its on-going fund-raising efforts starting with the RGS New Campus Development Fund Raising Banquet to be held at the Orchard Hotel on 26 September. The Transition to RI(JC) talk is scheduled on 12 October while a half-day guided trip to Pulau Semakau, Singapore’s only landfill and man-made island situated offshore among the southern islands of Singapore is planned for 19 October.

It has been a most fulfilling year for PRGS. My team and I would like to thank the Principal(s), the school and all fellow parents for their gracious support of PRGS and its activities thus far.

The School Song From High Olympus

From High Olympus

Page 80: Speech Day Report 2012/2013

80 | Raffles Girls’ School

Don’t lose your way with each passing dayYou’ve come so far, don’t throw it awayLive believing, dreams are for weaving

Wonders are waiting to startLive your story; faith, hope & glory

Hold to the truth in your heart

ChorusIf we hold on together

I know our dreams will never dieDreams see us through to forever

Where clouds roll byFor you and I

Souls in the wind, must learn how to bendSeek out a star, hold on to the end

Valley, mountain, there is a fountainWashes our tears all away

Words are swaying, someone is prayingPlease let us come home to stay

Repeat Chorus

When we are out there in the darkWe’ll dream about the sun

In the dark we’ll feel the lightWarm our hearts, everyone

If we hold on togetherI know our dreams will never dieDreams see us through to forever

As high as souls can fly, where clouds roll byFor you and I

If We Hold On Together

Music and lyrics by James Horner and Will Jenning
