Transcript of Speech day - Derby Grammar School day 7 September, 2017 . ... Head Prefect Marcus Latham - National...
Guest speaker:
Liz Fothergill, CBE DL
Liz Fothergill was born and educated in Derby. After attending Loughborough University she worked as a children’s librarian before joining the family business, Pennine, in 1977 which evolved from motor engineering into manufacturing hospital products. In 1982 she gained an MBA from Leicester Polytechnic.
She is currently Chairman of Pennine Healthcare based in Derby, one of the largest privately owned manufacturers of surgical disposables in the UK and employing over 300 people.
From 1999 to 2013 she was a Governor of the University of Derby, latterly as Vice-Chairman. The University awarded her an Honorary Doctorate in 2014.
In 2008 Liz became Chair of Derwent Stepping Stones, a neighbourhood nursery and training centre with four settings in the city of Derby. In 2011 she joined the board of YMCA Derbyshire supporting their work with homeless young people, and was very proud to make them her charity of choice during her year as High Sheriff.
In June 2012 Liz was appointed as HRH The Prince of Wales Ambassador for the East Midlands through his patronage of Business in the Community. She became President of the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce in 2015 and a business representative on the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership until 2016.
In 2014 Liz was awarded a CBE for Services to the Healthcare Products Industry, and in 2014 and was made a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Derbyshire.
Currently Liz is a governor at Landau Forte Academy Moorhead, as well as Chair of Derby Book Festival, now in its third year, and a board member of Derby Museums and Quad Derby. She served as the High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 2016/17.
As a passionate exporter she was appointed as a Department of International Trade Export Champion for the Midlands Engine in 2017, and was made Vice-President of Derbyshire Scouts in 2017.

Business French 2016-2017
Business French is an extra-curricular activity for those pupils we perceive show a particular talent in
French and who have, therefore, the potential to succeed at a high level in the subject.
The programme takes the form of training in Business French and our aim is for the pupils to obtain
further external qualifications. These qualifications exist at three levels: Level 1 being the equivalent to
lower GCSE standard, Level 2 to higher GCSE standard and Level 3 to AS/A level standard.
There are four units of study at each level (listening, reading, speaking and writing) and final assessment
is through a series of assignments, which are sent to the board for moderation.
This year we have had success at both level 2 and level 3:
Junior School teams triumph at the
