AN INVITATION. An invitation to take part aims to encourage a vast range of ideas and creative endeavours for the festival, from introducing hot young talent on the way up to revealing the constantly bubbling energy of established companies. We want to shake it up, prove that even the most ardent culture vulture can still be surprised by what Sydney can offer. No idea is too humble or too wild. No event is for too few people or too many. So go ahead, surprise us, and be part of vibrant festival of carousing, cultured fun.

DISCOVER SPECTRUM NOW.

“Ask not what your Spectrum Now Festival can do for you, but what you can do for your Spectrum Now

Festival!

Spectrum Now is a festival dedicated to bringing the broad-ranging and vibrant cultural and artistic life of

Sydney to the streets. In March, Sydney will be abuzz with pop-up spectacles, eateries, artist showcases,

dance works, interactive and installation art, contemporary garden displays, to name but a small scattering of

elements.

Because the most memorable artistic experiences always contain this magic ingredient, we’ve taken the

festival theme as Surprise. We’d like to incorporate unusual combinations of artistic expression, as well as

unusual venues, unexpected facets of some of our favourite personalities.... Reinventions of old standards. The

improvised, the ephemeral, the What the Hell did I Just See? Exciting!

And now it’s over to you. We are calling all artists, creative types, cultural entities: send us your best ideas!

Thrill us with your thoughts. We’d love you join us, and together we can make something original and

wonderful, and truly memorable.” Richard Roxburgh

We are inviting creative venues of all types across Sydney to be part of the very first Spectrum Now 2015. Not a venue? Never Fear! If you are an independent artist or group we encourage you to partner with a venue (or existing space) that are looking to host events. To get started you need to choose a category that best fits what you are proposing. Spectrum Now has created 10 categories to inspire and assist you in creating a fun and engaging event. You will then need to select the labels that you would like to be associated with your event (e.g music, art, dance etc) If you are unsure which category or label best suits your event please email the Spectrum Now team for advice and assistance at [email protected], including a full overview of your event. Event submission Registrants are required to agree to all terms and conditions specific to their chosen event category. If you represent a group of venues or restaurants we recommend you nominate one person in your organisation to register multiple events. Be as creative as possible and let your imagination run wild.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED.

We are inviting Sydney to experience Sydney's varied

arts spaces and explore what it means to be creative in

NSW, Australia and beyond

Participation in Spectrum Now profiles your event (and your business) via an extended marketing and promotional campaign, beginning in January 2015 and continuing through the Festival until the end of March.

Marketing is via Fairfax publications (newspapers and magazines) in print and on-line across Australia as well as via national and international media partners (TV, radio, digital). A strong PR campaign ensures maximum editorial opportunities.

But remember, the better your event and the more active you are in promoting it via Twitter, Facebook etc, the better the results will be. We will provide you with a PR/ Marketing Tips document to assist you in maximising your event exposure.

Exhibitions CATEGORY | WATCH THIS SPACE

Help colour our city with an explosion of art, design, installations and exhibitions. Create an artspace adventure, whether it's in an established gallery, outdoor spaces or previously unexplored venues. Open up studios, dark rooms, garages, laneways and workshops to reveal the creative engines of our city. • Creative collaboration. Combine artistic elements and stir

to create exciting new combinations. • Collectors open house. Do you have a collection you're

willing to share, even briefly? Throw the doors open for an hour or a day or a week.

• Insider art tours • Open galleries • Art in unusual spaces • Street art • Art in 24 Hours • New work. Are you ready to face an audience? Find out,

and see what they think. Explain or involve them in the process.

• Art bars. Find an artist you love - painter? poet? pianist? - and invite them in for a (specially created) cocktail or three and an audience on bar stools.

• Dangerous design. Do your ideas push the limits? Show us how and why and where.

Page 14: Spectrum Now Registration Pack

CATEGORY | UNDERCOVER

Access all areas: Spectrum Now offers a gold pass to behind the scenes experiences. Who are the people who make your theatre tick that deserve to take a bow? What marvels does your gallery hold that rarely see the light of day? Where do lyrics scribbled on a napkin become a song you can download from iTunes? Who is in charge in the rehearsal room, the director or stage manager? What does it take to put on a fashion show? Is your bar manager also an accomplished painter? We want to raise the curtain on the often unsung creative minds and hands that turn ideas and dreams into reality, the people who lurk in the background but are as important as any star. • Meet the makers talks • Open rehearsals • Talks & tours • Special screenings with Q & As • Behind the scenes tours Ask the audience - what do they want to know about, who would they like to meet?

Page 15: Spectrum Now Registration Pack

Let's get this party started. Nothing beats a live experience, whether it's riveting theatre, breath-taking dance or an electric musical experience. It's time to put on a show no one can forget. • Music/gigs • Comedy Nights • Dance • Garage Bands • Cinema Scores • Kids and gigs • Concert series

Everyone has their secrets, and Spectrum gets creative types to spill them in "My Secret Sydney". Now we want to know yours, and then tell everyone about it. for those in the know

Page 18: Spectrum Now Registration Pack

CATEGORY | KIDSPLAY The boundless imagination of children is an inspiration to us all. Let's play! Sydney is a great place to bring up kids, with abundant free outdoor entertainment - parks, beaches, bushwalks to name a few. Sydney also has plenty of engaging ways to attract their attention - award-winning theatre companies, creative writing programs, cooking classes. We want the city's youngsters to join in the festivities, with events and experiences created just for them to knock their tiny socks off. Recapture your inner child and let your imagination run free.

Page 19: Spectrum Now Registration Pack

CATEGORY | ON THE TABLE Sydney is obsessed - perhaps to an alarming level - with food. Spectrum tells readers where to eat out, the latest happenings in foodie land, and what to cook on the weekend. And every month, the Sydney Morning Herald Growers' Market showcases the best produce around to an appreciative audience of shoppers. Here's the challenge - create a unique offering for Spectrum Now to elevate your edible experience, whether you craft handmade chocolates, flip the best burger in town or blog about the food you love. Host an artist. Donate your walls for the festival. Turn your cafe, restaurant or bar into a stage for the night. Host a dinner, lead a tour or deliver a menu inspired by your creative heroes. In short: put your culinary cards on the table.

Page 20: Spectrum Now Registration Pack

CATEGORY | QUICK BITES Keep it simple but delicious. Design a small plate and a signature drink for $25 inspired by the theme we set. it could be Surf and turf Tim-Winton style? A bubbly cocktail for Jacki Weaver? What would Elvis eat? THE CHALLENGE It is said the secret to a healthy, balanced diet is eating food of different colours. Your challenge is to create an irresistible small bite to eat, paired with a daring drink, displaying a bright spectrum of colour yet perfectly matched. On your marks…

HOW TO REGISTER

Page 25: Spectrum Now Registration Pack

Is everything being held at the Playground? The Spectrum Playground is only one part of the Festival. It runs from March 11 – 22 and we are welcome to ideas and creative contributions to the Playground. However the Spectrum Now festival is about celebrating everything in this city. We encourage all venues to get involved, and will be celebrating across greater Sydney. As this is our first year we will concentrate our efforts in the city to help define us as an event, and have plans to expand in the future. I have an idea for a show, but do not have any funding for it. Can Fairfax help? Spectrum Now works similar to a Fringe festival, we can support in many ways by providing you your own event page on the website where content can be uploaded (including video), providing exposure in our printed program inserted into Spectrum in The Sydney Morning Herald (which gets into over 200,000 peoples hands) and a PR and marketing campaign for Spectrum Now valued at over $1million dollars.

Unfortunately we are not in a position to fund shows for the festival. We may be able to assist with venue ideas, or accept submissions for ideas to happen at our outdoor event at the Spectrum Playground. Please email us HERE to submit your ideas. We are happy to help out where we can. VENUES and ARTISTS – How do we find each other? If you are a venue looking for an act please email us HERE and let us know what you are looking for. Alternatively if you are an artist looking for a venue please email us HERE and let us know what you are looking for. We are more than happy to connect people and make introductions where suitable. How can it be an arts festival if you are not commissioning any shows for the event? Spectrum Now is a lifestyle and culture festival, celebrating all the things that Spectrum covers. We are not a traditional ‘arts’ festival where works are commissioned. Rather we can provide a platform and a reason to display and celebrate the great talent that resides in this country! We encourage our artistic community to make the most of all the marketing support and events associated with Spectrum Now to produce shows to be part of our festival. If you can not produce a show, perhaps there are other ways to get involved. We are a community, a family and not a dictatorship. We are aiming to bring creative experiences to this city. Can anyone register for Spectrum Now? How are you ensuring quality programming? All events registered for Spectrum Now will go through an approvals process with the Arts and editorial team here at Fairfax. If you are not known to us, or not an established venue or can not prove your experience as a performer or producer we will engage in a conversation with you about whether you are ready for Spectrum Now.

FAQ’s

Page 26: Spectrum Now Registration Pack

Is Richard Roxburgh curating the program? We work here together as a team. Working with Richard we (the Arts events team) and editorial will have an approvals process of all events submitted to be part of Spectrum Now. If your event is not in the spirit of Richard’s festival of surprise we may call upon you to have a re-think of the submission and make some changes. Can I register more than one event? Yes we encourage you to register as many events as you would like. Please contact us for possible discount on 3 or more event registrations. Please note multi-date events are registered only once as one event that occurs over several dates. Why do I have to pay an administration fee? What does this cover? The administration fee goes towards covering the hard costs. This includes but is not limited to the printing of more than 200,000 copies of our festival program, other pieces of collateral and building and maintaining a purpose built website to showcase Spectrum Now. Make sure you make the most of this opportunity with a good event idea, great copy, good high res images and video links. Why do we have to give you 4 tickets? We require tickets to host media and VIP guest attendance. We will inform you 72 hours before the show if we need to use the tickets so you have time to sell them on should we not require them. Please contact us directly ([email protected]) if you are selling out fast or have sold out, or have any queries about this. What is the Full Spectrum – Can I apply to be part of it? The Full Spectrum will be a series of ticketed talks curated by our Spectrum Editorial team. If you would like to submit yourself as a panellist or moderator please do so by emailing us ([email protected])
