Why Storage Management?

How much storage do I have available for my applications?

How well are my storage systems performing (RAS)?

How reliable is my SAN?

When do I need to buy more storage?

How can I automate provisioning and add approvals?Which servers, applications and departments

are the primary consumers of my storage?

How do I simplify and centralize

the management of my storage

infrastructure?

How is the capacity used, and is

there any wasted space?

How do I maintain storage service levels?

How is my storage being used? How do I know the storage is not the bottleneck for user

response time issues?

Is the storage infrastructure

available and performing as needed?

Managing data growth remains the top storage concern ……and other concerns are increasing

What are your top storage concerns?

Overview

Single Point of Control for the daily storage administration tasks

Collecting / displaying information ➜ online documentation• Status, asset, capacity, topology and performance• Storage, Fabric, Server und VMware

• Everything else ➜ launch element manage from context Server information ➜ Agentless and with Storage Resource Agents

Basic Services

• Each system comes with it’s own management UI

• While each of the “element managers” is optimized for one purpose, no one is able to answer such questions as:

… for you environments consisting of

– Block Storage

– File Storage

– Object Storage

– Hybrid Cloud scenarios

– Fibre Channel Fabric and Switches6© Copyright IBM Corporation 2016

Common Problem: Isolated management of connected systems

Advantage Disadvantage

• Optimal integrated• GUI offer a rich set of functions• CLI typically offer all functions

• Different interfaces for each device• Different look and feel across types and

vendors• Lack of overview on status, capacity,

configuration

• Each of the devices comes with some sort of notifying the administrator of problems

• Simply having a central log is easy to achieve when you set up:

– One group eMail receiver

– A syslog server

– SNMP manager, Omnibus, …

• What’s missing is the overview of the status of components in once central place

– When you know that there is an abnormal situation, you can quickly open the element manager to figure out what’s wrong

– Industry standard have been created for this kind to
