Safety GuidelinesAlways use the following guidelines when unsafe conditions exist or when potentially hazardvoltages are present:

• Always use caution and common sense.

• To reduce the risk of electrical shock, do not operate equipment with the cover remove

• Repairs must be performed by qualified service personnel only.

• Use caution when installing telephone lines. Never install telephone wiring during elecstorm. Never install telephone jacks in a wet location unless the jack is designed for thlocation.

• Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line is disconnected at the network interface.

Antistatic PrecautionsElectrostatic discharge (ESD) results from the buildup of static electricity. When a person wbody contains a static buildup touches a computer component, that component can fail.

This unit may contain static-sensitive components easily damaged by ESD. Always follow phandling and grounding techniques compliant with ESD precautionary standards. Keep all electronic parts and cards in antistatic packaging prior to intstallation, during transport, or whein use. Use antistatic floorpads and workbench pads whenever possible.

When handling components or setting switch options, always use an antistatic wrist strap conto a grounded equipment frame or chassis. If a wrist strap is not available, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface on the equipment. Never use a conductive tool, like a screwdriver or a paper clip, to set switches.

Canada DOC NotificationThe Industry Canada label identifies certified equipment. This certification means that the equipment meets telecommunications network protective, operation and safety requirementprescribed in the appropriate Terminal Equipment Technical Requirements document(s). ThDepartment does not guarantee the equipment will operate to the user's satisfaction.

Before installing this equipment, users should ensure that it is permissible to be connected facilities of the local telecommunications company. The equipment must also be installed usacceptable method of connection. The customer should be aware that compliance with the conditions may not prevent degradation of service in some situations.

Repairs to certified equipment should be coordinated by a representative designated by the sAny repairs or alterations made by the user to this equipment, or equipment malfunctions, mathe telecommunications company cause to request the user to disconnect the equipment.

Chapter 1: System Description

OverviewSpectraComm RLA system allows remote users to access central site computer networks thoperate using LAN facilities. With SpectraComm RLA, remote users dial through their PCs ua modem or ISDN Terminal Adapter (TA), and connect to the central site computer networkSpectraComm RLA ISDN PRI system allows users to access the central site LAN with eithemodem or TA by dialing the same phone number. The call type is detected automatically bychannel.

The SpectraComm RLA consists of a rack of modems and an access server which connectremote user to the central site LAN, providing access to the same resources as if the user wdirectly connected to the network. These resources include printers, file servers, application sInternet access, news, E-mail, etc. Individual users dial in to the modem rack, which is conn to the RLA Server PC by means of a 26-conductor cable that can extend to 250 feet.

SpectraComm RLA System ComponentsThe SpectraComm RLA system consists of the following components:

• SpectraComm RLA shelf (one or two 16-slot chassis)

• SpectraComm RLA server (PC compatible platform with server software)

• Dual V.34 Modems (up to 32 analog lines per shelf)

• SC5034 Dual Modem Data Set Emulators (up to 24 T1 or 23 ISDN B-channels per sh

• SC5090 Dual Modem Data Set Emulators (up to 24 T1 or 23 ISDN B-channels per sh

• SC5001 Line Terminating Unit (terminates T1 or ISDN PRI line)

• SC PRI Card (provides ISDN D-Channel signaling)

System Set UpsThe SpectraComm RLA shelf combines a rack of Dual V.34 Modems, or SC5034 Dual ModData, or 5090 Set Emulators, and a T1 Line interface unit (one LTU is required for 5034 or 5In addition, the SpectraComm RLA shelf combines up to 32 individual DTE channels into a speed serial TDM connection to the SpectraComm RLA server. This connection eliminates thfor separate cabling on each modem interface and allows the SpectraComm RLA server to remotely located. See Figure 1-1 and Table 1-2.

Chapter 2: Installation

OverviewThis chapter guides you through the installation and use of the SpectraComm RLA System icommunications network. If this is your first experience using these units, you should reviewChapter 1: System Description, for a better understanding of the basic features and use of thein your network.

Unpacking and HandlingInspect the unit for damage. In the event of damage, notify the shipper immediately. Save thand any packing material so that you can reship the unit, if necessary.

InstallationAll electrical connections are made through the backplane interface.

Place the unit in a ventilated area where the ambient temperature does not exceed 1040F (400C).

Do not install the unit directly above equipment that generates a large amount of heat (such assupplies).

To install the SpectraComm Shelf, refer to Operating and Installation Instructions for SpectraComm Shelf, GDC Publication Number 010R302-000.

Refer to your respective product manuals for further installation instructions.

Shelf Configurations

The SpectraComm system can be installed in a single shelf configuration or in a shelf-to-shconfiguration.

• Figure 2-1 depicts the front view of a shelf with installed modems

• Figure 2-2 depicts the rear view of a typical backpack logic assembly mounted to shelf

• Figure 2-3 depicts a Non-PRI SpectraComm shelf-to-shelf connection

• Figure 2-4 depicts a PRI SpectraComm shelf-to-shelf connection

Note Be sure to install shelves and power supplies as described in the SpectraComm Shelf manual. Failure to do so may result in overheating and subsequent power supply shutdown.

Two-Line SpectraComm PRI System

3. Attach backplane ribbon cables (P/Ns 029H510-001 and 029H509-001).

4. Confirm Shelf Berg jumpers are correct (Refer to Shelf manual).

5. Shelf 1 Berg jumper is in the up position and Shelf 2 Berg jumper is in the down position. The Bergs are located in the shelf backplane J50 location.

6. Using the RLA Management console, or a PC Monitor and keyboard attached directly toRLA Server, configure all async ports.

7. Choose the GDC LTU ISDN Mode Highway 1 (Server) for Shelf 1 and GDC LTU ISDN Mode Highway 2 (server) for Shelf 2 (You might have to customize your particular setupnecessary).

11. After the 5001 LTU has been configured with the AT string, configure the RLN port to bedown.
