SPECTRA
Isaac Newton provided us with the scientifi c basis for the understanding of colour when he
proved that a prism separated white light into a continuous spectrum of colours. Newton
identifi ed 7 different colour-segments (by analogy with the 7 notes of the music scale)
which he identifi ed as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet – the colours we
would typically refer to as ‘rainbow colours’.
The human eye and brain register, perceive and respond to refracted light according to an
individual’s unique physiological and psychological capacity and conditioning. It means
that the context in which colours are experienced, as well as the immediate physical
stimulus they evoke, will essentially determine the different realms of emotion viewers will
experience. ‘Spectra’ sets out to explore the aesthetics of colour from diverse perspectives
- encouraging viewers to explore the symbolic and metaphorical signifi cance of colour
according to their unique and individual abilities.
To maintain what has now become a trademark of JBFA, works by Modern Masters are
juxtaposed with those of contemporary artists to create new dialogue and encourage new
interpretations. A silkscreen by Optical Art pioneer Bridget Riley is complemented by Gavin
Rain’s celebrity portraits created with concentric circles of colour, Anthony Lane’s bright
tubular sculptures and Lars Fischedick’s angular panels.
Edoardo Villa’s playful portrait sculpture is juxtaposed by Wehrner Lemmer’s colourful,
expressive compositions and Anton Chapman, Marlene von Dürckheim, Hennie Niemann
Jnr, Nigel Mullins, Georgia Lane, Cathy Layzell, Hussein Salim and André Urbanski’s vibrant
canvases.
Ceramists Hennie Meyer and Clementina van der Walt add another dimension to the
exhibition with their works of ‘fi red’ colour inspired by childhood memories and philosophy.

Colour impacts directly on our senses - its interpretation and infl uence on our mind and
psyche varies in relation to our individual characters. It undoubtedly has the
ability to lift our spirits, brighten our day and inspire a positive attitude – which was what
motivated us to plan this exhibition for the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
