Trenchlessinstallation:Veryhighdemandsonpipelines
Open-trench pipe installation notonly represents a hazard to trafcand causes annoyance to local resi-dentsbutalsopermanentlydamagestheroadsurface.Thishasresultedina growing acceptance of trenchlesspipeinstallationmethods,whichcan
alsobeusedtolaypipesunderrivers,lakesortrafcroutes.
Atthesametime,thesemethodssavetimeandmoney.Costsavingsofupto50percentcanbeachievedaccord-ingtoapublicationbytheBavarianStateMinistry for Regional Develop-ment and Environmental Affairs ofSeptember11,1996-apowerfular-gumentinviewofthehighcostpres-sureonthepublicpurse.
Various options are available fortrenchless pipe installation. With all
thesemethods,thereisanincreasedrisk of pipe damage. The extent ofthis damage cannot be determinedoncethepipeislaid(blackboxinstal-lation!). For this reason, pipes withaprotectiveouterlayerarerequiredand are therefore recommended bythe DVGW (German Association ofGasandWaterEngineering)fordirec-tionaldrilling(CodeofPracticeGW
321)andforpipebursting(CodeofPracticeGW323).

TheSLM2.0pipeoffersthefollowingprotectivefunctions:

Trenchlessinstallationmethodsimposehigherdemandsonthepipematerial.Thepressure-bearingpipewalloftheSLM2.0 is produced from modernPE100RCplus pipe materials (Resist-
ancetoCrack),andthepipealsohasan extremely abrasion-resistant outerlayertoprotectitfromscratchesandscoring. This hard outer layer is es-sentialforblackboxinstallationandtherefore recommended by the Ger-manDVGWfortrenchlessinstallationtechniques.
Protectivefunction1Inordertopreventpipefailure,theEN
standardsandDVGWWorksheetsG472andW400-2permitabrasionsonlyto10%oftheminimumwallthick -ness.Furthermore,thedamagemustrun out smoothly so as to preventcrackinitiation.To reliably protect HDPE pipes fromscoring during trenchless installation,egeplasthas,therefore,addedtheex-traprotectivecoatingoftheSLM2.0pipe.Thesecureprotectionfromscor-ingandnotchingreliesonanaddition-
allayermadeofamineral-reinforcedpolypropylene.Thispreventsdamagefrom reaching the pressure bearingpipecore.

Protectivefunction3In operation, the protective coatingpreventsdirectcontactbetweenstonesoroldpipeshardsandthepressurebearingHDPEpipe.Thepointloadswhich arise are distributed by theprotective coating, thereby distinctlyreducingthestresspeaks.
Protectivefunction4The modern, crack resistant sub-
stance of the core pipe, made ofPE100RCplus, provides the protec-tion against crack propagation. ThetearstrengthofthismaterialhasbeendemonstratedbyitshighvaluesintheFNCTtest.

very high resistance to stress crack-ing;thispreventscracksontheinsideofthepipefrombeinggeneratedbythestresspeakswhichresultfrompointloads.

Moderninstallationproceduresmakespecial demands of pipe material.Thematerialsusedmustsatisfyaddi-tional requirements, over and abovethematerialpropertiesmonitoredac-cording to the applicable standardsandDVGWWorksheetGW335PartA2. The resistance ofthepipemate-rial to slow crack growth is critical
forthelifespanofthepipeunderex-tremeoperatingconditions,ifthepipeistoachievethestandardservicelifeof100yearsinspiteoftheincreaseddemands. In particular, resistance tostress-induced cracking can be im-provedenormouslythroughoptimisedpolymerisation. The qualities of to-daysPE100RCplusallowittoalmost
reachtheresistancetostress-inducedcrackingof cross-linked polyethylenePEX,whichhasbeenusedforyearsinharshconditions.ThenotchtestandtheFNCTtestpro-vide information about the stress-in-ducedcrackingbehaviour(slowcrackgrowth)ofapipematerial.
In the notch test according to ISO13479,asectionofpipeisnotchedasspecied,andafterwardstestedtode-structionatatesttemperatureof80Candtestpressureof9.2bar(SDR11,PE100).ISO16770describesafurtherdevel-opmentofthenotchtest.IntheFNCT,
smalltestbarsofthematerialtobetestedareincisedwithasharpedge
and,at80C(+2%ArkopalN100),subjectedtoaconstanttensileloadof4N/mm2untiltheyfail.Thetestsimu-lateslocalisedstressconcentrations.Anadditional check is the point loadtestusingtheDr.Hesselmethod.Thistestreproducesverywelltheeffectofastonepressingagainstthepipe.An
pipe, which has been internally pres-surised,isalsodentedinwardsusinga
roundpunchasapointload(penetra-tiondepth:8.2%oftheexternaldiame-ter)inordertosimulatethestresscausedbyastone.Thetestiscarriedoutatatemperatureof80C(+2%ArkopalN100).
So as to be ableto make estimatesof the service lifeof pipes underadditional pointloading, Dr. Hes-
sel Ingenieurtech-nik compared tests
of pipes under internalpressure, and with additional pointloading,totheresultsfromtheFNCTtest (3R international 4/2001 and
6/2001). With this comparison, thestressestowhichapipeinstalledwith-outasandbedisexposedduringitsoperatinglifemayberelatedtotheresultsofFNCT testing,and thus theFNCTtestmaybeadoptedforregularqualitymonitoring.
Performedwithintheframeworkofthefullqualitytestingcycleare:monitor-ing of the material properties of allPE100RCplusrawmaterialchargesby
FNCTtests,andmonitoringofthema-terial properties after processing oftherawmaterial.Thelatteriscarriedoutontheproducedpipebyatestinglaboratorywhichisaccreditedtoper-formsuchanalyses.ThePE100RCplusmaterialsperformdistinctlybetterthanthestandardPE100typesinboththenotch and FNCT tests, with valuesthatliewellabovethosestipulatedforpipeswithprotectiveproperties.

method show what advantages apipewithaprotectivecoatinghaswithregardtoitsresiliencetopointloading. No stress concentrationactsonthecorepipeintheimmedi-ateareaofcontact.

TheSLM2.0istheresultofconsistentandsteadyfurtherdevelopmentofthewellprovenSLMpipe.Conrmationofitsimprovedqualityhasbeenpro-videdbyestablished,independenttest-inginstitutes.Thepressurebearingpipewallconsistsof PE 100 RCplus (optionally PE 80),whichguardsreliablyagainstdamageby virtue of its excellent crack resist-

TheSLM2.0consistsofacorepipein accordance with DIN 8074/75,uponwhichaprotectivecoatingisad-ditionallyextrudedinordertoincrease
its scratch and abrasion resistance.Thefourgreendoublestripesservetoidentifyitasamultiplelayerpipe.
ScopeofapplicationThe installation instructions apply tosoilcoveredegeplastSLM2.0pipeswithcorepipesmadeofHDPEinac-cordance with DIN 8074 and DIN8075foruseasdrinkinganddomesticwaterpipelines,andasgaspipelines.The pipe jointsand pipeline compo-nentsmustberatedforusewiththeir
respectiveoperatingpressures.
Installation,opentrenchmethodegeplast SLM2.0pipes are suited forinstallation without a
sandbedbecausetheyaremadeofPE100RCplus,whichishighlyresistant
to stress-induced cracking.Their suit-abilityforinstallationwithoutasandbedisveriedbyanindependenttest-inginstituteonthebasisofcontinualqualitychecks.
Theexcavatedsoilissuitableforback-llingifitcanbecompacted.egeplastdoes not make any provisos for itscomposition in terms of grain size.Considerablecostsavingsresultfromeliminatingtheneedtodisposeoftheexcavatedsoil.
For assessment of individual cases,itisnecessarytodeterminethetotalcost of soil replacement and weighthatagainsttheadditionalcostoftheSLM2.0pipe.
ThestandardsforassessmentofthellbasearesetbyZTVA-StB97fromtheGermanRoadandTransportationRe-searchAssociationinCologneaswellasbyDIN4022andDIN18196.
Thepipetrenchistobedugoutinac-cordancewithDIN4124(trenchpro-leandsheeting)andDIN1998(lay-outofpipelinesinpublicareas).Theminimumcoveringforgaspipelinesis0.6to1.0m,althoughthecoveringcanbereducedto0.5mforsectionsuptoca.2.0mlongwhichdonotcarry a heavy load (front gardens,pavements).Drinkingwaterandsew-agepressurepipelinesaretobelaidatadepthof1.0to1.8m(accordingtoclimateandgroundconditions)safe
fromfrost.Applicabletotheconstruc-tionofwaterconduitsis,furthermore,DVGWWorksheetW400-2.

TheegeplastSLM2.0 pipe is flexible and
manoeuvrable. These
attributes make installation using theploughingorcuttingprocedurespos-sible.Theminimumallowablebendra -diusshouldbeobserved.Thebendra-diuscan,however,beunder-steppedforashorttimeduringtheinstallationprocess,providedthatthepipestringissupportedbysomemechanism,e.g.guiderollers,thatmakeskinkingofthepipeimpossible.Theincreasedstretchingoftheouterbreswhichresultsfromthisisnotcriti-calforPE100RCplus,thematerialusedhere.
Installation,trenchlessmethod
Thereisahigherriskof damage duringtrenchless installation
and renovation pro-cedures. The extentofthisdamagetothe
pipecannotbedeterminedafterwards(blackboxinstallation)!Forthisreason,pipeswithaprotec-tive coating are essential. Multiplelayer pipes such as the egeplastSLM2.0constituteapracticableso-lutionhere:theyallowcontinueduseoftheapprovedandtestedegeplastgas, drinking water, and sewagepipes, while ensuring that the outersurfaces of the pipes are abrasionresistantforusewithinnovativeinstal-lation methods. DVGW WorksheetsGW321(water-jetdrilling)andGW
323 (pipe bursting) recommend theuseofpipeswithprotectivecoatings.The DVGW regulations specify the
maximum permitted tractive forcesfortrenchlessinstallationprocedures;these may not be exceeded. Over-shooting these limits leads to per-manent damage to the new piping.egeplastrecommendstheuseofsuit-abledataloggersforcompletedocu-mentationoftheconstructionproject.The minimum allowable bend radiusshouldbeobserved.Longitudinal force-locked joining pro-ceduresmustbecarriedoutaccordingtothe currentregulatorycodes oftheDVGWandDVS.The egeplast installation guidelinesshouldbefollowedsoastoavoidstepsatthejointsduetomisalignment.

Before electrofusion welding ofSLM2.0 pipes can take place, theprotective coating must be removedusinganegeplastcoatstrippingtool(Fig 5-15/16). Coat stripping of thepipeendscanbecarriedoutbyege-plastonrequest.
Thelengthofcoatingtobestrippedcorrespondstoatleasthalfthelengthofthesleevetting(seeTab5-4).Thecontact surfaces must be preparedby scraping and/or cleaning beforewelding(Fig5-17).
For stress free welding of pipe sup-pliedasbundledcoils,egeplastrec-ommends use of the egeplast pipe-heatersystem(Fig5-13/14).
Once the sleeve ttings have beenmounted,thetreatedareasareheat-ed to fusion temperatureby passingelectric current though integratedresistance wires (heating coil) in thesleevettings,andtherebyweldedto-gether(Fig5-18).Theweldingprocesstakesplaceautomaticallyifthedeviceissetupappropriately.Theassemblyinstructions given by the respectivemanufacturers are to be followed.Standards for workmanship are laidoutinDVS2207,Part1.

egeplast SLM2.0 pipes are manu-facturedfromPE100RCplusmaterialsbelongingtoweldinggroup003.Theprotectivecoatingisextrudedontothemedium-bearingpipe,andisremovedaccordingtotheegeplastinstallationinstructions before joining. After this,welding with one another and withany other approved material is pos-sible.
BeforebuttfusionweldingofSLM2.0cantakeplace,theprotectivecoatingmust be removed using an egeplastcoatstrippingtool(Fig5-21-23).Itisadvisable to use the M10 strippingtoolandthecoatingcutterforthis.Ro-taryscrapersarenotrecommended.Coat stripping of thepipe ends canbecarriedoutbyegeplastonrequest.Welding should be carried out incompliancewithDVS2207,Part1instandardweldingmachines,in which
theuseofskimmedweldingshoesad-justedtothespecicexternaldiameterisrecommended.Clampingjawssuit-able for welding machines from theWidoscompanycanbesuppliedfreeofchargebyegeplast(Tab5-5).
Forstressfreeweldingofpipesuppliedas bundled coils, egeplast recom-mendsuseoftheegeplastpipe-heatersystem (Fig 5-19/20). The sequenceofoperationscontinuesasspeciedin
DVS2207,Part1,untiltheformationofauniformlycircularweldbead(Fig5-25/26).For open trench installation,and forploughingandcuttingusingegeplastpipeswithprotectivecoatings,cover-ingoftheweldedjointafterwardsisnotnecessary.
Exception:Whenusingthemoleploughingmeth-od, the joints must be covered afterwelding as per the instructions Pipeburstingbuttfusionwelding.

If the formation oftheweldbeadshouldreachbeyondthethicknessof theprotective coating, thenthebeadistoberemovedusinganexter-nalbeadremover.

Densolid HK7 is a fast curing, impactresistant two-component ller materialbasedonpolyurethane.Toreducethecuring time at lower temperatures, thefasterreactingDensolidHK7-Wshould

As an alternative to Densolid HK7,egeplastoffersresin-impregnatedglassbre wrappings. These are activatedwithwater.Aftersoakinginclearwa-terforca.10-15sec,thewrappingiswoundaroundtheareatobeinsulated.Indoingso,careshouldbetakenthatthisareaisfullywrapped,andthatitiswrappeduntilitisushwiththepro-
tective coating. The wrappings areobtainableinwidthsbetween2.5cmand12.5cm,accordingtotheexposedareatobecovered.Thenishedareais bound liberally with adhesive tapeafterwardsforamoreevenhardeningofthewrapping.Nostrainshouldbeputonthepipelineuntilthewrappinghasfullyhardened.The manufacturers instructions are tobefollowedindoingso.Thecontinuouslyushexternalsurfacerequired for pipe strings intended foruseintrenchlessinstallationproceduresisguaranteedbythecoveringprocessdescribedabove.

5.7RecyclingandEnvironmentalProtection
Polyethylene is an organic material
andconsistsonlyofcarbonandhy-drogen. It has a wholly neutral im-pact on the environment. PE, beingathermoplastic,canberemeltedanalmostunlimitednumberoftimesandprocessedintonewproducts.Pipeoff-cutsanddiscardedplasticpipemate-rial,which,forexample,accumulateduringtheinstallationofplasticpipesystems,shouldthereforeberecycledifatallpossible.
Atthestartof1994,theKunststoffro-
hrverband (KRV), together with theGtegemeinschaft Kunststoffrohre(GKR),hadalreadyintroducedana-tionalcollectionandrecyclingsystemforplasticmaterials,whichisfreeofchargeforthetradeanditscustomersandincorporatesanobligationtotakeback these materials. This environ-mentally conscious system eliminatesdumpingorincinerationtogetherwiththehighcostswhicharisefromdispos-albythesemethods.
Recycling boxes are provided on a
loanbasisto thecustomeras collec-tioncontainers.Theplasticpipemate-rial,atleastpartiallycleaned,isthenthrown into these boxes. Once theboxes have been lled, their collec-tionandexchangeforemptyboxesisarranged.Onlyboxeswhicharelledexclusivelywithplastic pipematerialare taken. The recycling boxes arethen brought,via regional collectionpoints,toarecyclingplantinwhichthecollectedpipematerialissorted,
cleaned,andcutintosmallpiecestobe employed subsequently for otheruses.
