CSFC can provide you with the following curricular and extra-curricular tuition and guidance: Dedicated tuition in BMAT (BioMedical Admissions Test) and UKCAT (UK Clinical Aptitude Test) medical admissions tests. • BMAT IN-HOUSE TRAINING BMAT Course in Cardiff BMAT stands for Bio-Medical Aptitude Test which is used as part of the entry procedures in a number of Universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and University College London. Our step by step guidance will help you achieve your best score. Classroom Lessons In these lessons the primary focus is on Section 3, which is a short but demanding essay. Attention is also given to Critical Thinking, which is tested in Section 1 of the BMAT paper. Intensive Revision Course The college provides an intensive course consisting of two full training days. The sessions focus on building your critical thinking skills, increasing your confidence and giving useful tips on time- management. Guidance is given on effective essay-writing under examination conditions. Strategy Book The BMAT Strategy Book provides an introduction to multiple- choice aptitude tests, and detailed strategies for the different question types found in the BMAT. It includes time management techniques, and score-building review sections to complete for homework. The Strategy Book also contains essay-writing guidelines and tips and sample essays, in addition to extra practice essay questions for self-study in the run-up to the test. Full-length Practice Tests The full-length BMAT exams taken during class will increase your familiarity with BMAT-style test questions and will build your stamina and confidence. Timing is extremely important on the BMAT. These practice tests will familiarise you with the test format and help you with time management so that you can answer the maximum number of questions correctly on test day. • UKCAT IN-HOUSE TRAINING UKCAT Preparation/Revision Course Cardiff Sixth Form College offers its students a short preparatory course (which includes revision) to enable them to achieve their best score in the Tests. Students are introduced to the typical kinds of questions asked and the best strategies for answering them. Preparation The course consists of a 4-day intensive training in the skills and techniques which UKCAT tests. It helps students become familiar with the format of the test, the variety of questions asked, possible pitfalls and the best approaches to attain your best score. Tips for time-management and other advice are offered. Revision In addition, students are given a software package to work on at home, which provides an introduction to computer-based, multiple- choice aptitude tests, detailing strategies for each type of question. • Healthcare Diploma:

• This is a course provided by former students of CSFC who arecurrently studying Medicine, or other Healthcare courses. Theyprovide students with the opportunity to obtain hands-onexperience of dissections, blood taking, administering injections,and other practical skills. They share their experiences ofuniversity life and give advice on subject-related matters. Theyalso provide help with interviews and give tips on managing thestresses and strains Healthcare courses can give.

• Weekly meetings in which they participate in talks on topicalissues affecting the Medical, Dentistry and Veterinaryprofessions, and discuss the kinds of questions asked atinterviews.

• On-going support from former CSFC students currentlystudying medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine atuniversity.

• Work Experiences:

• Regular local work experiences at GP surgeries, veterinarypractises, and other NHS organisations which are organised byan experienced, dedicated member of staff and are designed togive students a better understanding of both the NHS systemand the private sector. These work experiences are highly desiredand, for most schools, difficult to obtain. However because ofCSFC’s focused approach we are able to give each studentindividual attention.

• Work experience at medical practises and hospitals, includingthe once in a lifetime chance to shadow doctors abroad atmajor hospitals during the college’s Goodwill AmbassadorProgramme. Past students have had the chance to witness livebirths, caesarean sections and post-mortems.

• Weekly volunteering is incorporated into the students’timetable. Placements include care homes, charity shops andworking with children.

• Higher Education Guidance:

• Students benefit from one to one meetings with our CareersAdvisors (who is also a former Admissions Tutor) to assist in thewhole UCAS application process, from writing Personal Statementsto interview techniques. This is a unique feature to CSFC.

• Careers Day:

• The college regularly arranges careers days in which we inviteprofessionals such as doctors, dentists and vets to come and talkabout a day in their lives. This provides students with a uniqueopportunity to discuss with working professionals the stresses,strains and rewards that the medical, dentistry and veterinaryprofessions brings.

• Visits from university admissions tutors who’ll give insight into theuniversity application process.

• Visits from medical school staff and current medical students.

• Weekly meetings in which they participate in talks on topicalissues affecting the Medical, Dentistry and Veterinary professions,and discuss the kinds of questions asked at interviews.
