Course: MSc in Shipping, Trade and Finance

I chose to study for an MSc as I wanted to specialise in an area of great personal interest, shipping, and also to develop a basis in finance and trade. My ambition is to enter the shipping industry with a focus on finance.

The programme has provided me with strong shipping fundamentals, and this current knowledge of the industry has given me a good grounding and an idea of a career direction. It has provided a great network; not only with my current classmates, but from previous years’ graduates, now working in industry. Shipping circles are quite small, therefore the more people you know, the better your opportunities become.

The International Centre for Shipping, Trade and Finance at Cass, which provides teaching to these three full-time MSc degrees, was established in 1983 by Professor Costas Th. Grammenos. The Centre pioneered a uniquely integrated approach to global business and is recognised internationally for its educational excellence. The Centre also demonstrates its strong commitment to its students and the global business community by organising regular conferences, symposia and seminars.

These events feature leading figures in commerce, finance and industry, as well as government and international organisations. In addition to its world class teaching, the Centre has a significant research profile.

The Centre is internationally known for its research, teaching and international dialogue in the following areas: energy economics, shipping finance, shipping risk management, commodity finance, logistics and supply chain management, commodity trade, financial and commodity risk modelling and management.

The three Masters courses are designed to equip you for careers within the highest levels of international business, including banking and finance, shipping, supply chain, insurance, energy and other related sectors and industries.

All courses are delivered through a variety of teaching methods, including case studies and group work, covering the latest topics in international business. Lectures are given by academic faculty and highly qualified practitioners from the business and finance communities.

The MSc in Energy, Trade and Finance is validated by the Energy Institute, of which students can become members after graduating.

The MSc in Shipping, Trade and Finance is validated by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. Graduates will be granted exemptions from various examinations of the Institute.

The MSc in Supply Chain, Trade and Finance is validated by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and provides full exemptions from the educational requirement for chartered membership. The course has been accredited by CILT (The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport) and CIPS (Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply).

Graduates have gone on to have eminent careers worldwide in fields such as commercial banking, commodity trading, import-export, government, investment banking, e-commerce, insurance, law, management consultancy, manufacturing, real estate, shipping finance, shipping operations, logistics, transport finance and stockbroking.

Before starting at Cass I worked for a boutique energy investment firm as an acquisitions associate. I decided to take a career break to enable me to gain some educational standout in the market place, whilst also future-proofing my CV. Selecting to take a specialist Masters in Energy, Trade and Finance seemed like a good option. I chose Cass as I wanted a non-American perspective on the energy business. I especially enjoyed the energy trading module which was taught in the second term. It was taught by industry professionals who provided an alternative view to the academic perspective.

Cass also offers a very diverse student body. I have met an amazing group of people from all over the world. I have learned as much from them as I have from the course.

When I finish, I want to work on the energy/commodity sales and trading desk of a bank or small investment bank in London.

Students have access to a dedicated Relationship Manager who will share their knowledge and expertise about the job market. Cass also offers a comprehensive range of company presentations, careers fairs, workshops and online resources to help students build their own career strategy.

“ I believe the programme will open up wider career opportunities for me and allow me to excel in the area of Supply Chain Management.”

I heard about Cass from various friends in the shipping industry who attended the School. I chose to study at Cass because of its reputation, the quality of its programmes, its location in the City and the modern facilities.

Before starting the course I had worked for the past five years for a German shipping line in Barcelona and Hamburg. I chose the course as I recognised that a specialisation would be more valuable towards a successful career in the transportation industry than any other course. Cass offered a prestigious and well-balanced programme, covering all aspects of trade, finance and transportation.

My ambition is to continue a successful career in the transportation industry and to actively contribute to my country’s development and growth.

A family friend taking the Course last year recommended the programme to me.

Although I found my under-graduate course interesting, it was extremely broad and I was unsure what aspect of business I wanted to specialise in. This course has definitely given me guidance towards an area of business that I would thoroughly enjoy.

I aim to be a high flyer. I would like to work for an organisation to gain experience and eventually start my own business. I believe the programme will open up wider career opportunities for me and allow me to excel in the area of Supply Chain Management.

Information sessions for these courses take place all year round. To register please go to www.cass.city.ac.uk/masters
