Viking Chapter AMCA National Meet 2019

What do you call it when your get everything you wished for – AND MORE? Having your cake and eating it too? That saying never made sense to me. Of course if I have my cake, I‟m going to eat it! But that saying is meant to convey an concept of an unobtainable opposites that can never exist in the same universe at the same time. And going back many years, it seemed that our National Meet and good Weather were like oil and water – they never could mix. Until now! This year the universe aligned and we were blessed with warm (but not too warm) sunshine and no rain. Even during set up and tear down, Mother

Nature showed that she doesn‟t hate motorcycles (all the time). Not only did we get amazing weather, but the 2019 National Meet was a huge success on so many fronts! First off, we had more bikes in our display than ever before. Last year‟s to-tal of 172 was the most in many years, and this year‟s total of 183 sets a new record! (My faulty memory tells me our previous record was 176.) The quality and diversity of the bikes was also a smashing success, with club members bringing their old favorites and a lot of new bikes that have never been shown before. Check out the end of this article for fun stats on the breakdown of the bikes!

But I think the one thing that really blew the doors off of 2018 was the swap meet. It was huge! I hope you had the chance to walk through the swap that spread all the way north of the water tower to nearly the end of the campground. Our National Meet has entered a new phase in terms of size, but has maintained our usual high quality of vendors and our community feel. Hanging out in the swamp meet and camp-ing grounds is what it‟s all about. The camaraderie of club members, the food at the VJMC tent and the time spent catching up with old friends and making new ones is what our club is all about.

This year‟s theme bike was the Honda CB750, celebrating 50 years since the birth of the Super Bike. Yeah, yeah, yeah… there were plenty of amaz-ingly powerful machines before 1969, but the quality, price and value of the CB750 made it the first Super Bike that anyone could buy, ride and main-tain. The bike delivered raw power through a super smooth transverse four and matched that with the stopping power of disk brakes. Tens of thousands of CB750s were produced during their run of 1969 until 2003. We had twenty-one of them at our show, including an ultra-rare, first year sand-cast machine like the ones selling now for crazy money. But not only did we have such rare early bikes, but the display of Viking and VJMC bikes was a rarity in the diversity and range of years.

We tried out a few new things this year that helped keep the event fresh. Instead of having seat-ing in the center of the room, this year the bikes were front-and-center, with the socializing area along the back corner. The “Tech Talk” stage was repositioned along the wall, giving it a more inti-mate feeling to the discussions. Not sure if the location helped, but we had the best attended and interactive tech talks ever on Friday (conducted by Gary Kloss) and the paint session on (continued)

Viking Chapter AMCA National Meet 2019

Saturday (conducted by Mark Tomlinson). This new arrangement fo-cused visitor‟s eyes on bikes instead of butts in chairs, but let me know what you think! Our decorations continue to amaze and delight. Every person that comes through our doors, comments on the beautiful banners, posters

and memorabilia on display. Dave Moot again knocked it out of the park with a whole new, fresh collection of ban-ners. This year we sold some of the older banners as a way to recoup the cost of production – and spread the sweet machines into garages all over the Midwest! Thanks to everyone that volunteered at the meet. We have more help setting up on Wednesday and Thursday then ever before. We also had great help at the gates, the registration desk and in with the swap meet. Did the Survey Monkey help encourage you to volunteer? Let us know! We also changed the banquet into a Vol-

unteer Appreciation dinner. Hopefully that encouraged you to volunteer this year because Giggles, from Gabes in the Park, really stepped it up this year with a multiple servings of high-quality food, including two entrees and many side dishes and tasty deserts. We had 94 volunteers that took advantage of the free eats and sold 43 banquet tickets. Instead of having the banquet in the nearby Gabe‟s log cabin, we had the event inside the Pro-gress Center. This meant that the cash bar opened nice and early and gave us plenty of time to hang out and socialize. After filling our plates, we passed the microphone through the crowd to give everyone a chance to share upcoming motorcycle events around the region. AM-CA president, Ross Metcalfe was our first of two featured speak-ers. He reminisced about all the years of Viking meets he‟s at-tended, all the way back to the beginning. He continued his reminiscences into his childhood with an inspira-tional story of the WWII veterans that mentored him as a youth. Their unassuming and humble nature belied their bravery of their wartime exploits. Imparting a lifelong love of caring for and riding old machines upon the impressionable Metcalfe, these veterans created a legacy that continues to today. He encouraged us to fol-low in their steps and share our passion with the young people in our lives, in our neighborhoods and in our communities. Concluding the banquet, we heard from local film director, Eric Tretbar, with tales from the filming of the motorcycle film “Girl Meets Bike”.

Viking Chapter AMCA National Meet 2019

We took closer watch over the people‟s choice awards this year, by making sure that the votes were cast at the registration desk, in order to make sure there wasn‟t any “vote stuffing”. The first place people‟s choice award went to Dennis Gunsolus with his beautiful 1965 Harley XLCH. The second place went to Marshall Brunelle‟s 1968 Harley Sportster. I hope you got a chance to see that amazing work of art! Marshall is a Vietnam War veteran, who created a machine that pays homage to the fighter jets of that conflict. Everything from the ma-chine guns down to the rivets created a completely unique mix of mo-torcycle and jet power! This year we raised the price of admission from the $5 rate that we‟ve been charging for the last 13 years, to $8. The new price didn‟t seem to deter visitors, because we had 1684 folks pay at the gate – more than 2018 or 2017. Remember that Mother Nature unleashed her wrath in the form of storms and unbearable heat in 2018, so that year doesn‟t count. So taking the 2017 year as our benchmark, with the additional ticket reve-nue, we brought in $5,000 more at the gate then we did in 2017. Overall, the meet was a resounding financial success. With the increased take at the gate and the huge explosion of vendors, our revenue far exceeded pre-vious years. On the other hand, our expenses were also up this year because the club picked up the banquet tickets for volunteers (and the cost of the banquet increased) and we also gave away two $500 prizes meant to encourage Viking members to bring their bikes. When all was said and done, we cleared around $4300 in profit for this year‟s event.

It‟s been a few years since we had organized rides during the National Meet. Mother Na-ture hasn‟t been on our side. But this year we had organized rides on both Friday and Satur-day night! (and even a post-set-up ride Thursday night by club members to the Vin-tage Bike night at Bauhaus Brew Labs) After the banquet on Friday, Jeff Ricker led a ride through the parkways around St Paul and made it back to the fairgrounds just in time as a light sprinkle was starting. On Saturday evening, after the show was done, we rode our machines to nearby Lake Monster Brewing to park them on their outdoor patio and enjoy a few beverages.

Thanks to everyone that made this year‟s event so successful and so special! I encourage everyone to show your bike, sell something in the swap meet, camp out, chow down at the banquet and go on a ride. And above all, VOLUNTEER! Not only does it make the event happen, it‟s the best way to meet new motorheads and reconnect with old friends. In 2020, our theme bike will be the Harley Shovel-Head. Get „em ready!

Viking Chapter AMCA National Meet 2019

Hello classic bike fans, I thoroughly enjoyed taking pictures at the 2019 Antique and Vintage Motorcycle Show. My pictures are ac-cessible by the link below and provided free to visitors and participants to download. The pictures are not wa-termarked. The photos are also free to publishers, newsletters, bloggers, in print, online, etc, or in any profes-sional capacity, but photo credit is required. Cite Photo by Douglas Marsh. I tried to capture every bike on display, award winner, sponsor, and speaker. My apologies if I missed some-one or something.

The two $500 awards went to Viking Chapter members Kerry Rasmussen and Mike Crane. Mike brought 7 bikes, Kerry brought one. Or as one board member put it, it proves that “either strategy works.” 109 bikes were eligible for the drawing. Roy Williams: An attempt at answering the question: “Did the offer of two $500 prizes bring in more bikes?” I looked at all current Viking Chapter members who brought more than 1 bike in 2019 (twenty members). I compared their number of entries in 2019 to 2018. In total, they brought 66 bikes this year vs. 18 bikes last year. You be the judge! The two $500 prizes will be awarded again next year at the 2020 Viking Chapter AMCA National Meet, so start planning now to increase your chances of winning!

Because somebody has to do it.
