"Working to prevent childhood

hunger during the summerNearly 1 in 4 Ohio children live in food

insecure households. During the school year, they can count on free or reduced price school meals. But in the summer months, their families often struggle to afford

to put nutritious meals on the table with limited resources and without school meals

to help.

The federal Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is designed to provide meals to kids

in need during the summer, when schools are closed. But right now, only about 1 in 1O kids in Ohio who rely on free and reduced price school meals during the school year access the SFSP for meals during their

summer break.

The Ohio Association of Foodbanks wants to change that. We leverage resources to fight childhood hunger during the summer,

including AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates and funding for innovative meal programs that fill some of the gaps left

by traditional SFSP. Plus, we advocate for improvements to federal nutrition programs

to make them work better for food insecure families.

We're proud to share the results of that work from summer 2O17 with you.

"As the summer progresses the kids are learning a lot about

healthier eating habits. On rare days when our snack doesn't

contain fruit, the kids are begging for some. It makes me

feel like the program is truly helping them.

Courtney Davis, AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate""I always get really happy when the kids ask for more fruits and vegetables. Those are the highlights of my day!Jennifer Matteson, AmeriCorpsVISTA Summer Associate"

National Service: Making summer meals nutritious, fun, & accessible We partnered with the Corporation for National and Community Service to deploy 68 AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates at 25 summer meals sponsors throughout Ohio. Those members spent their summers in full-time service to their country and community, preparing and serving meals, developing and implementing

educational and recreational programming, recruiting volunteers, and much more.

They helped their host site organizations to serve 554,886 summer meals to children at-risk of hunger.

Governor's Summer Meals Programs: Filling the gaps & meeting the needThe Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is critical for the nearly 63,OOO Ohio children who rely on it for

summer meals daily. But for the more than 567,OOO Ohio kids who receive free or reduced price school meals, but don't participate in SFSP, hunger is a serious and ongoing threat. To participate in the traditional

SFSP, children have to be able to travel to SFSP locations and consume meals on-site. That can be next to impossible for many kids, whether they live in rural, isolated areas without transportation or in unsafe

neighborhoods with busy roads. Several counties in Ohio don't have SFSP sites at all, and many kids go without meals when adverse weather strikes. Plus, SFSP sites can't send meals home to eat over the weekend.

In addition to advocating for changes to the way the federal SFSP is operated, we're proud to partner with Governor John R. Kasich, the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, the Ohio

Department of Job and Family Services, and the Ohio Department of Education to operate three innovative, state-funded programs to fill some of the gaps left by SFSP.

Summer Weekend Meals Program

This program provided kid-friendly, shelf-stable meals for children attending SFSP sites to take home to eat over the weekend. About 1O,OOO children received meals to take home each weekend for 1O weeks, for a total of about 594,OOO meals.

Summer Rural DeliveryMeals Program

This program provided a week's worth of kid-friendly, shelf-stable meals

to about 2,8OO children each week for 9-1O

weeks. Participating

children live in rural areas without access to traditional SFSPs. In total, this program provided 28O,385 meals to underserved kids.

Mobile Farmers Market Program

This program provided fresh fruits and vegetables and protein items to families with children participating in the summer weekend or rural delivery meals programs. It provided 9O9,O2O pounds of nutritious food at an average cost of $O.O831 per 3-ounce serving.

Three solutions to fight childhood hunger
