ACOuSTICAL HARDWARE BuLLETIN 13

SOuND RETARDANT DOORHARDWARE INFORMATION BuLLETIN

Through our experience in manufacturing sound retardant doors, we have found that problems occur when certain hardware is used that will compromise the effectiveness of the sound door assembly. On the following pages, we have tried to address some of the more common situations, and offer some alternative solutions which will preserve, or enhance, the performance of the assemblies.

1. hinges Weight of the doors will vary, depending on size, and STC rating. Refer to the door schedule sheets of shop drawings for weight of door. Also see general information page, under hinge location, or, contact Krieger’s engineering department. In any case, we always recommend the use of heavy-duty ball-bearing hinges.

2. closers A. PARALLEL ARM CLOSERS: Mount the arm bracket to “Z” bracket furnished by Krieger, or use a top jamb mounted closer. closer arm shoe must never be mounted directly to the seal cover.

B. RIXON FLOOR CLOSER: The arm which must mount in the bottom of the door precludes the use of a mortised door bottom. We do not recommend using this hardware item on acoustical doors.

C. CONCEALED OVERHEAD CLOSER: This mounts in the head of frame and would not permit a continuous perimeter seal, resulting in a sound leak. We cannot certify an STC rating with this setup.

Page 14: Special purpoSe Doors & WinDoWs - · PDF fileSpecial purpoSe Doors & WinDoWs. ... R-Value 2.0, True Thermal Break assembly including door, frame and hardware. ... separated by a structural

D. CLOSERS RECOMMENDED FOR uSE WITH CAM LIFT HINGE ASSEMBLIES: The cam lift hinges will not, by themselves, close and/or latch, the door. The door bottom seal is coming down onto the sill the last ten degrees of swing, so there is some friction, depending on how tightly the seal is adjusted. Also the seal on the jamb, either compression or magnetic, will affect how easily the door will latch, depending on how evenly. It is adjusted around the entire perimeter. A door closer is required. Also, any u. L. rated doors would need a closer if they are to bear the label.

you must choose a closer that allows for 3/8" vertical movement. After checking with several closer manufacturers, we offer the following recommendations:

• LCN 4010, 4020, 4041 Super Smoothie • Dorma series 640, 540, 7600, 7800, and TS83 • Corbin/Russwin DC2000, DC3000, DC4000 • Norton 7500, 8500 series • Sargent 250, 251, 350, 351, 1230, 1231, 1250, and 1251 (Please note that no documentation has yet been received from Norton or C/R validating this recommendation)

CLOSERS NOT RECOmmENDED: LCN: 4110, 4041 Cush-N-Stop, 4040 EDA (Extra Duty Arm), and any others with a large bolted knuckle at the elbow that will not allow 3/8" vertical movement. slide track type closer and overhead stops will not work.

3. locKs A. CyLINDRICAL LOCKS like the Schlage “D” Series: Our perimeter seals are 1-1/8" high. Latest oversize roses for lever trim (with spring assembly) will overlap them, at 2-3/4" backset. Or, if a knob is used, there is very little grasping clearance with this backset. We therefore strongly recommend that you always use a 3-3/4" backset, for either levers OR knobs.

B. MORTISE LOCKS are available only with a 2 3/4" backset. For this reason, lever handles should be used instead of knobs to insure proper clearances.

C. uNIT LOCKS like the Corbin 300 are not recommended, under any circumstances: These locks require that the entire edge of the door be notched out. The escutcheon is too close to the edge of the door and hits the perimeter seal preventing contact between the door and the seal. We cannot certify an acoustical rating with this lock.

D. The SIMPLEX uNICAN 1000 digital control lock is very sensitive, we recommend specifying a “roller strike” when using this lock in conjunction with (NC-6 magnetic) seals. We would also suggest substituting a heavy duty Schlage Door “D” series latch bolt with a 3 3/4” backset. Also see below.

E. As an alternate to the Simplex item, we suggest considering the use of the yale 2100 series touchcode or Alarm lock trilogy dl 2500 series digital cylindrical lock with a 3 3/4" backset. These units are battery operated.

yale cylindrical touchcode 2150 / 2160 or Alarm lock trilogy dl 2500 series.

F. LOCKS FOR uSE WITH 3" THICK DOORS: The combination of dual seals, 2-1/4" in height, and the increased door thickness somewhat limits the selection of latching hardware that is compatible with this design. We recommend that you use a cylindrical lock with 5" backset; or please consult with Krieger’s engineering department before making final selection.

G. ACOuSTICAL DOORS & ELECTRIC STRIKES We suggest the customer use an electric lock in lieu of an electric strike. This will permit seals to be adjusted properly, which will substantially reduce the risk of compromising the sound rating of the opening.

Most electric strikes are too sensitive and bind up when used with “compression” type seals; for that reason we recommend they not be used together.

Compression seals create pressure between the lock latch bolt, and the gate of electric strike which will not allow the gate to activate and retract. If electric strikes must be used, magnetic seals should be utilized.

Electric locks require low voltage power be routed through the door. At conventionally hinged (level swing) openings this transfer is best done with an electrified hinge. At doors with cam-lift hinges, a seperate power transfer device is required, such as the Adams-Rite 4611, the AMD ES105, or the new Von Duprin EPT2.

you should contact our engineering team to review the model numbers of any electrified hardware being considered, to ensure compatibility with perimeter sound seals, and that the assembly will operate properly, while also meeting the noise reduction requirements.

Page 17: Special purpoSe Doors & WinDoWs - · PDF fileSpecial purpoSe Doors & WinDoWs. ... R-Value 2.0, True Thermal Break assembly including door, frame and hardware. ... separated by a structural

H. ELECTRIC STRIKES AT PAIRS: Some electric strikes for pairs of doors, (example: Von Duprin 3071, 3081, and 6221) require a cutout through the door. We do not recommend strikes of this type be used because of the hole through the door and the fact they will not work with the overlapping astragals. The Von Duprin 3091, 3092, and 6223 would be a better choice for sound rated openings.

4. Flush Bolts A. FLuSH BOLTS at inactive leaf of pairs: The bottom rod needs to be offset (approximately 1/2," easily done in field by installer), so as to not interfere with the mortised or cam lift door bottom.

B. AuTOMATIC FLuSH BOLTS: We do not recommend the use of automatic flush bolts on pairs of doors furnished with sound seals. When the doors are closed, and compression gaskets on the frame and astragal are adjusted to seal properly, the automatic flush bolts will not retract when the active leaf is opened. This is because the seal causes the side of the bolt to be pressed tightly against the side of the strike cutout. While the bolt may be retracted by pulling the door tightly against the seals, when the door is closed again the bolt will not automatically enter the strike, since it requires a loose clearance in order to function.

When permitted by local authority, a u.L. Listed manual flush bolt should be used in lieu of the automatic type, or (glynn Johnson FB50, door control 845 constant self latching flush bolts). Another alternative would be to use optional KsP mullion with a positive latch in each door. Please contact Krieger’s engineering department for additional information on this condition.

5. PAnic devices A. CONCEALED VERTICAL ROD TyPE, example: Von Duprin 8847 or 9947; these devices require a large open area, full height inside the door, which unacceptably reduces the effective area of the sound retardant core, as well as precluding the use of a mortised automatic, or cam-lift, door bottom. For these reasons, we do not recommend their use where noise reduction is critical. We cannot certify an STC rating with this configuration.

B. SuRFACE VERTICAL ROD TyPE, example: Von Duprin 8827 or 9927; the surface mounted roller latch should be mounted on a “Zee” bracket (furnished by Krieger) at the head, never on the sound seal itself! Also, any screws occurring within the bottom 3” of the door must be cut short and filed or they will prevent theautomatic door bottom from operating properly.

C. RIM TyPE (single doors only), example: Von Duprin 88 or 99; the surface mounted roller latch should be mounted on a “Zee” bracket (furnished by Krieger). It cannot be used at pairs due to the use of overlapping astragals on the “push” side of the door. If rim devices must be used at pairs, a Krieger mullion (not VD 8954 type) would be required. A far better answer would be to use two mortise devices (VD 9975); these also need a mullion.

D. FIRE RATED SuRFACE VERTICAL ROD, example: Von Duprin 8827-F; this uses a soffit latch assembly in the head of frame. this cannot be mortised into the perimeter seal! If used, it can be mortised into a metal box mounted below the seal, attached to the frame with a special zee bracket furnished by Krieger.

e. recommended eXit devices For PAirs Without mullions:

correct:If both leaves of a pair of doors with panic devicesare “active”, a coordinator will be required becauseof the overlapping astragal(s). (A must for acousticalperformance) in this case we recommend using amortise lock exit device on the active leaf, with asurface vertical rod device on the inactive leaf. This allows either leaf to be active.

do not use!If surface vertical rod exit devices are specifiedon both doors, then the inactive leaf cannot beopened until the active leaf is opened, since bothleaves are latched top and bottom and haveoverlapping astragal(s). We cannot certify anstc rating without astragal(s).

6. thresholds Acoustical doors must have a smooth surface for the door bottom seal to land on, slide across, and seal against when finally closed. This applies equally to a level-swing door with automatic bottom, or to a cam-lift door with fixed (adjustable) seal. When sound doors swing over carpet, a smooth surface saddle threshold, at least the same height as the carpet, preferably slightly higher, MuST be used. This is also essential to preventing a sound leak under door through the carpet. Thresholds are to be set in a good grade of acoustical sealant. The use of fluted and/or abrasive coated thresholds will cause premature wearing of the door bottom neoprene, and could cause the seal to pull out of its’ retainer and jam up under the door. All thresholds must be set so as to extend 1-1/2” minimum beyond the pull side of the door to provide a “landing” area for the door bottom (either type) as they start to descend.
