Advanced Linear Algebra, 3eSteven Roman, Irvine, CA, USA

About the BookFor the third edition, the author has added a new chapter on associative algebras that includes the well known characterizations of the finite-dimensional division algebras over the real field (a theorem of Frobenius) and over a finite field (Wedderburn's theorem); polished and refined some arguments (such as the discussion of reflexivity, the rational canonical form, best approximations and the definitions of tensor products); upgraded some proofs that were originally done only for finite-dimensional/rank cases; added new theorems, including the spectral mapping theorem; corrected all known errors; the reference section has been enlarged considerably, with over a hundred references to books on linear algebra. From the reviews of the second edition: “In this 2nd edition, the author has rewritten the entire book and has added more than 100 pages of new materials. … As in the previous edition, the text is well written and gives a thorough discussion of many topics of linear algebra and related fields. … the exercises are rewritten and expanded. … Overall, I found the book a very useful one. … It is a suitable choice as a graduate text or as a reference book.” Ali-Akbar Jafarian, ZentralblattMATH “This is a formidable volume, a compendium of linear algebra theory, classical and modern … . The development of the subject is elegant … . The proofs are neat … . The exercise sets are good, with occasional hints given for the solution of trickier problems. … It represents linear algebra and does so comprehensively.” Henry Ricardo, MathDL.

AlgebraThomas W. Hungerford, Cleveland State University, Cleveland, OH, USA

About the BookAlgebra fulfills a definite need to provide a self-contained, one volume, graduate level algebra text that is readable by the average graduate student and flexible enough to accomodate a wide variety of instructors and course contents. The guiding philosophical principle throughout the text is that the material should be presented in the maximum usable generality consistent with good pedagogy. Therefore it is essentially self-contained, stresses clarity rather than brevity and contains an unusually large number of illustrative exercises. The book covers major areas of modern algebra, which is a necessity for most mathematics students in sufficient breadth and depth.

ContentsPrerequisites and Preliminaries - Groups - The Structure of Groups - Rings - Modules - Fields and Galois Theory - The Structure of Fields - Linear Algebra - Commutative Rings and Modules - The Structure of Rings - Categories.

Algebra, 3e Rev EdSerge Lang, Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA

About the BookFrom April 1999 Notices of the AMS, announcing that the author was awarded the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition for his many mathematics books: 'Lang's Algebra changed the way graduate algebra is taught, retaining classical topics but introducing language and ways of thinking from category theory and homological algebra. It has affected all subsequent graduate-level algebra books.' From MathSciNet's review of the first edition: 'The author has an impressive knack for presenting the important and interesting ideas of algebra in just the 'right' way, and he never gets bogged down in the dry formalism which pervades some parts of algebra.' This book is intended as a basic text for a one-year course in Algebra at the graduate level, or as a useful reference for mathematicians and professionals who use higher-level algebra. This book successfully addresses all of the basic concepts of algebra. For the new edition, the author has added exercises and made numerous corrections to the text.

Applied Linear Algebra and Matrix AnalysisThomas S. Shores, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE, USA

About the BookThis new book offers a fresh approach to matrix and linear algebra by providing a balanced blend of applications, theory, and computation, while highlighting their interdependence. Intended for a one-semester course, Applied Linear Algebra and Matrix Analysis places special emphasis on linear algebra as an experimental science, with numerous examples, computer exercises, and projects. While the flavor is heavily computational and experimental, the text is independent of specific hardware or software platforms. Throughout the book, significant motivating examples are woven into the text, and each section ends with a set of exercises. The student will develop a solid foundation in the following topics: Gaussian elimination and other operations with matrices; basic properties of matrix and determinant algebra; standard Euclidean spaces, both real and complex; geometrical aspects of vectors, such as norm, dot product, and angle; eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and discrete dynamical systems; general norm and inner-product concepts for abstract vector spaces. For many students, the tools of matrix and linear algebra will be as fundamental in their professional work as the tools of calculus; thus it is important to ensure that students appreciate the utility and beauty of these subjects as well as the mechanics. By including applied mathematics and mathematical modeling, this new textbook will teach students how concepts of matrix and linear algebra make concrete problems workable. Thomas S. Shores is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where he has received awards for his teaching. His research touches on group theory, commutative algebra, mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, and inverse theory.

Introduction to Calculus and Classical Analysis, 2eOmar Hijab, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, USA

About the BookThis text is intended for an honors calculus course or for an introduction to analysis. Involving rigorous analysis, computational dexterity, and a breadth of applications, it is ideal for undergraduate majors. The book contains many remarkable features: - complete avoidance of /epsilon-/delta arguments by instead using sequences, - definition of the integral as the area under the graph, while area is defined for EVERY subset of the plane, - complete avoidance of complex numbers, - heavy emphasis on computational problems, - applications from many parts of analysis, e.g. convex conjugates, Cantor set, continued fractions, Bessel functions, the zeta functions, and many more, - 344 problems with solutions in the back of the book, - interesting applications, many of which are not usually found in advanced calculus books About the first edition: 'The treatment, however, is far from standard, and many topics are included, especially in the last chapter, that are not available in other modern elementary texts…This is a rigorous book with good motivational material and explanatory remarks. It includes 347 problems, with solutions given in a 73-page appendix…some of the most attractive material requires considerable skill in manipulation.' D.H. Armitage (MathSciNet). New in the second edition: For the new edition, the author has corrected errors and rewritten large portions of the text. In addition, the author has introduced new topics, such as a combinatorial proof that the radius of convergence of the Bernoulli series is 2p. 'ICCA is beautifully conceived and carefully executed...[this book] has much to teach, both about mathematics and how to write mathematics.' Marvin Knopp, American Mathematical Monthly.

Linear Algebra Through Geometry, 2eThomas Banchoff, Brown University, Providence, RI, USAJohn Wermer, Brown University, Providence, RI, USA

About the BookLinear Algebra Through Geometry introduces the concepts of linear algebra through the careful study of two and three-dimensional Euclidean geometry. This approach makes it possible to start with vectors, linear transformations, and matrices in the context of familiar plane geometry and to move directly to topics such as dot products, determinants, eigenvalues, and quadratic forms. The later chapters deal with n-dimensional Euclidean space and other finite-dimensional vector space. Topics include systems of linear equations in n variable, inner products, symmetric matrices, and quadratic forms. The final chapter treats application of linear algebra to differential systems, least square approximations and curvature of surfaces in three spaces. The only prerequisite for reading this book (with the exception of one section on systems of differential equations) are high school geometry, algebra, and introductory trigonometry.

Classical Fourier Analysis, 2eLoukas Grafakos, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, USA

About the BookThe primary goal of these two volumes is to present the theoretical foundation of the field of Euclidean Harmonic analysis. The present edition contains a new chapter on time-frequency analysis and the Carleson-Hunt theorem. The first volume contains the classical topics such as Interpolation, Fourier Series, the Fourier Transform, Maximal Functions, Singular Integrals, and Littlewood-Paley Theory. The second volume contains more recent topics such as Function Spaces, Atomic Decompositions, Singular Integrals of Nonconvolution Type, and Weighted Inequalities. These volumes are mainly addressed to graduate students in mathematics and are designed for a two-course sequence on the subject with additional material included for reference. The prerequisites for the first volume are satisfactory completion of courses in real and complex variables. The second volume assumes material from the first. This book is intended to present the selected topics in depth and stimulate further study. Although the emphasis falls on real variable methods in Euclidean spaces, a chapter is devoted to the fundamentals of analysis on the torus. This material is included for historical reasons, as the genesis of Fourier analysis can be found in trigonometric expansions of periodic functions in several variables.

Complex Analysis, 4eSerge Lang, Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA

About the BookThis is the fourth edition of Serge Lang's Complex Analysis. The first part of the book covers the basic material of complex analysis, and the second covers many special topics, such as the Riemann Mapping Theorem, the gamma function, and analytic continuation. Power series methods are used more systematically than in other texts, and the proofs using these methods often shed more light on the results than the standard proofs do. The first part of Complex Analysis is suitable for an introductory course on the undergraduate level, and the additional topics covered in the second part give the instructor of a graduate course a great deal of flexibility in structuring a more advanced course. This is a revised edition, new examples and exercises have been added, and many minor improvements have been made throughout the text.

Complex Variables with ApplicationsS. PonnusamyHerb Silverman

About the Book"Complex numbers can be viewed in several ways: as an element in a field, as a point in the plane, and as a two-dimensional vector. Examined properly, each perspective provides crucial insight into the interrelations between the complex number system and its parent, the real number system. The authors explore these relationships by adopting both generalization and specialization methods to move from real variables to complex variables, and vice versa, while simultaneously examining their analytic and geometric characteristics, using geometry to illustrate analytic concepts and employing analysis to unravel geometric notions. The engaging exposition is replete with discussions, remarks, questions, and exercises, motivating not only understanding on the part of the reader, but also developing the tools needed to think critically about mathematical problems. This focus involves a careful examination of the methods and assumptions underlying various alternative routes that lead to the same destination. The material includes numerous examples and applications relevant to engineering students, along with some techniques to evaluate various types of integrals. The book may serve as a text for an undergraduate course in complex variables designed for scientists and engineers or for mathematics majors interested in further pursuing the general theory of complex analysis. The only prerequistite is a basic knowledge of advanced calculus. The presentation is also ideally suited for self-study."

Differential Analysis on Complex Manifolds, 3eRaymond O. Wells, Jacobs University Bremen, Germany

About the BookIn developing the tools necessary for the study of complex manifolds, this comprehensive, well-organized treatment presents in its opening chapters a detailed survey of recent progress in four areas: geometry (manifolds with vector bundles), algebraic topology, differential geometry, and partial differential equations. Subsequent chapters then develop such topics as Hermitian exterior algebra and the Hodge *-operator, harmonic theory on compact manifolds, differential operators on a Kahler manifold, the Hodge decomposition theorem on compact Kahler manifolds, the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations on Kahler manifolds, Griffiths's period mapping, quadratic transformations, and Kodaira's vanishing and embedding theorems. The third edition of this standard reference contains a new appendix by Oscar Garcia-Prada which gives an overview of the developments in the field during the decades since the book appeared. From a review of the 2nd Edition: “..the new edition of Professor Wells' book is timely and welcome...an excellent introduction for any mathematician who suspects that complex manifold techniques may be relevant to his work.” Nigel Hitchin, Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society “Its purpose is to present the basics of analysis and geometry on compact complex manifolds, and is already one of the standard sources for this material.”

Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, 3eLawrence Perko, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ, USA

About the BookThis textbook presents a systematic study of the qualitative and geometric theory of nonlinear differential equations and dynamical systems. Although the main topic of the book is the local and global behavior of nonlinear systems and their bifurcations, a thorough treatment of linear systems is given at the beginning of the text. All the material necessary for a clear understanding of the qualitative behavior of dynamical systems is contained in this textbook, including an outline of the proof and examples illustrating the proof of the Hartman-Grobman theorem, the use of the Poincaré map in the theory of limit cycles, the theory of rotated vector fields and its use in the study of limit cycles and homoclinic loops, and a description of the behavior and termination of one-parameter families of limit cycles. In addition to minor corrections and updates throughout, this new edition includes materials on higher order Melnikov theory and the bifurcation of limit cycles for planar systems of differential equations, including new sections on Francoise's algorithm for higher order Melnikov functions and on the finite codimension bifurcations that occur in the class of bounded quadratic systems.

Elementary Analysis: The Theory of CalculusKenneth A. Ross, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR, USA

About the BookDesigned for students having no previous experience with rigorous proofs, this text on analysis can be used immediately following standard calculus courses. It is highly recommended for anyone planning to study advanced analysis, e.g., complex variables, differential equations, Fourier analysis, numerical analysis, several variable calculus, and statistics. It is also recommended for future secondary school teachers. A limited number of concepts involving the real line and functions on the real line are studied. Many abstract ideas, such as metric spaces and ordered systems, are avoided. The least upper bound property is taken as an axiom and the order properties of the real line are exploited throughout. A thorough treatment of sequences of numbers is used as a basis for studying standard calculus topics. Optional sections invite students to study such topics as metric spaces and Riemann-Stieltjes integrals.

ContentsIntroduction - Sequences - Continuity - Sequences and Series of Functions - Differentiation - Integration - Appendix on Set Notation - Selected Hints and Answers - References - Symbols Index - Index.

Elementary Functional AnalysisBarbara MacCluer, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA

About the Book"This text is intended for a one-semester introductory course in functional analysis for graduate students and well-prepared advanced undergraduates in mathematics and related fields. It is also suitable for self-study, and could be used for an independent reading course for undergraduates preparing to start graduate school. While this book is relatively short, the author has not sacrificed detail. Arguments are presented in full, and many examples are discussed, making the book ideal for the reader who may be learning the material on his or her own, without the benefit of a formal course or instructor. Each chapter concludes with an extensive collection of exercises. The choice of topics presented represents not only the author's preferences, but also her desire to start with the basics and still travel a lively path through some significant parts of modern functional analysis. The text includes some historical commentary, reflecting the author's belief that some understanding of the historical context of the development of any field in mathematics both deepens and enlivens one's appreciation of the subject. The prerequisites for this book include undergraduate courses in real analysis and linear algebra, and some acquaintance with the basic notions of point set topology. An Appendix provides an expository discussion of the more advanced real analysis prerequisites, which play a role primarily in later sections of the book."

Introduction to Calculus and Analysis, Vol. 1Richard Courant, New York University, New York, USAFritz John, New York University, New York, USA

About the BookFrom the reviews: 'Volume 1 covers a basic course in real analysis of one variable and Fourier series. It is well-illustrated, well-motivated and very well-provided with a multitude of unusually useful and accessible exercises. (...) There are three aspects of Courant and John in which it outshines (some) contemporaries: (i) the extensive historical references, (ii) the chapter on numerical methods, and (iii) the two chapters on physics and geometry. The exercises in Courant and John are put together purposefully, and either look numerically interesting, or are intuitively significant, or lead to applications. It is the best text known to the reviewer for anyone trying to make an analysis course less abstract. (...)' The Mathematical Gazette (75.1991.471).

Introduction to Functional Differential EquationsJack K. Hale, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USASjoerd M. Verduyn Lunel, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands

About the BookThe present book builds upon the earlier work of J. Hale, 'Theory of Functional Differential Equations' published in 1977. The authors have attempted to maintain the spirit of that book and have retained approximately one-third of the material intact. One major change was a completely new presentation of linear systems (Chapter 6-9) for retarded and neutral functional differential equations. The theory of dissipative systems (Chapter 4) and global attractors was thoroughly revamped as well as the invariant manifold theory (Chapter 10) near equilibrium points and periodic orbits. A more complete theory of neutral equations is presented (Chapters 1,2,3,9,10). Chapter 12 is also entirely new and contains a guide to active topics of research. In the sections on supplementary remarks, the authors have included many references to recent literature, but, of course, not nearly all, because the subject is so extensive.

ContentsPreface - Introduction - 1. Linear differential difference equations - 2. Functional differential equations: Basic theory - 3. Properties of the solution map - 4. Autonomous and periodic processes - 5. Stability theory - 6. General linear systems - 7. Linear autonomous equations - 8. Periodic systems - 9. Equations of neutral type - 10. Near equilibrium and periodic orbits - 11. Periodic solutions of autonomous equations - 12. Additional topics - Appendix: Stability of characteristic equations - Bibliography - Index - List of Symbols.

Mathematical Principles of Signal Processing: Fourier and Wavelet AnalysisPierre Bremaud, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland

About the BookFourier analysis is one of the most useful tools in many applied sciences. The recent developments of wavelet analysis indicates that in spite of its long history and well-established applications, the field is still one of active research. This text bridges the gap between engineering and mathematics, providing a rigorously mathematical introduction of Fourier analysis, wavelet analysis and related mathematical methods, while emphasizing their uses in signal processing and other applications in communications engineering. The interplay between Fourier series and Fourier transforms is at the heart of signal processing, which is couched most naturally in terms of the Dirac delta function and Lebesgue integrals. The exposition is organized into four parts. The first is a discussion of one-dimensional Fourier theory, including the classical results on convergence and the Poisson sum formula. The second part is devoted to the mathematical foundations of signal processing - sampling, filtering, digital signal processing. Fourier analysis in Hilbert spaces is the focus of the third part, and the last part provides an introduction to wavelet analysis, time-frequency issues, and multiresolution analysis. An appendix provides the necessary background on Lebesgue integrals.

ContentsFourier Analysis in L1: Fourier Transforms of Stable Signals - Fourier Series of Locally Stable Periodic Signals - Pointwise Convergence of Fourier Series - Signal Processing: Filtering - Sampling - Digital Signal Processing - Subband Coding: Fourier Analysis in l2 - Hilbert Spaces - Complete Orthonormal Systems - Fourier Transforms of Finite Energy Signals - Fourier Series of Finite Power Periodic Signals - Wavelet Analysis: The Windowed Fourier Transform - The Wavelet Transform - Wavelet Orthonormal Expansions - Construction of a MRA - Smooth Multiresolution Analysis.

Modern Fourier Analysis, 2eLoukas Grafakos, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, USA

ContentsPreface - Smoothness and Function Spaces - BMO and Carleson Measures - Singular Integrals of Nonconvolution Type - Weighted Inequalities - Boundedness and Convergence of Fourier Integrals - Time-Frequency Analysis and the Carleson-Hunt Theorem - Glossary - References - Index.

Financial Markets Theory: Equilibrium, Efficiency and Information Emilio Barucci, Università di Pisa, Italy

About the BookFinancial Markets Theory presents classical asset pricing theory, a theory composed of milestones such as portfolio selection, risk aversion, fundamental asset pricing theorem, portfolio frontier, CAPM, CCAPM, APT, the Modigliani-Miller Theorem, no arbitrage/risk neutral evaluation and information in financial markets. Starting from an analysis of the empirical tests of the above theories, the author provides a discussion of the most recent literature, pointing out the main advancements within classical asset pricing theory and the new approaches designed to address open problems (e.g. behavioural finance). It is the only textbook to address the economic foundations of financial markets theory from a mathematically rigorous standpoint, and to offer a self-contained critical discussion, based on empirical results. Financial Markets Theory is an advanced book, well-suited for a first graduate course in financial markets, economics or financial mathematics. It is self-contained and introduces topics in a setting accessible to economists and practitioners equipped with a basic mathematical background. For those not acquainted with standard microeconomic theory, the tools needed to follow the analysis are presented early in the book. The approach makes this a vital handbook for practitioners in insurance, banking, investment funds and financial consultancy, as well as an excellent graduate-reference textbook.

ContentsPrerequisites - Choices under Risk - Stochastic Dominance, Mutual Funds Separation and Portfolio Frontier - General Equilibrium Theory and Risk Exchange - Risk Premium: Capital Asset Pricing Model and Asset Pricing Theory - Multiperiod Market Models - Information and Financial Markets - Uncertainty, Rationality, Heterogeneity - Financial Markets Microstructure - Corporate Finance - Intermediation and Regulation - References - Index.

Game Theory: Decisions, Interaction and EvolutionJames N. Webb, Nottingham, UK

About the BookThis introduction to game theory is intended as a first course for undergraduate students of mathematics, but it also contains material which will be of interest to advanced students or researchers in biology and economics. The outstanding feature of the book is that it provides a unified account of three types of decision problem: Situations involving a single decision-maker: in which a sequence of choices is to be made in 'a game against nature'. This introduces the basic ideas of optimality and decision processes. Classical game theory: in which the interactions of two or more decision-makers are considered. This leads to the concept of the Nash equilibrium. Evolutionary game theory: in which the changing structure of a population of interacting decision makers is considered. This leads to the ideas of evolutionarily stable strategies and replicator dynamics. An understanding of basic calculus and probability is assumed but no prior knowledge of game theory is required.

ContentsPart I: Decisions. Simple Decision Models - Simple Decision Processes - Markov Decision Processes. Part II: Interaction. Static Games - Finite Dynamic Games - Games with Continuous Strategy Sets - Infinite Dynamic Games. Part III: Evolution. Population Games - Replicator Dynamics. Part IV: Appendices - Constrained Optimisation - Dynamical Systems - Solutions to Exercises - Further Reading - Bibliography - Index.

Notes on Set Theory, 2eYiannis Moschovakis, University of California, Los Angeles, CA, USA

About the BookThe axiomatic theory of sets is a vibrant part of pure mathematics, with its own basic notions, fundamental results, and deep open problems. At the same time, it is often viewed as a foundation of mathematics so that in the most prevalent, current mathematical practice 'to make a notion precise' simply means 'to define it in set theory.' This book tries to do justice to both aspects of the subject: it gives a solid introduction to 'pure set theory' through transfinite recursion and the construction of the cumulative hierarchy of sets, but it also attempts to explain precisely how mathematical objects can be faithfully modeled within the universe of sets. In this new edition the author added solutions to the exercises, and rearranged and reworked the text in several places to improve the presentation. The book is aimed at advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate mathematics students and at mathematically minded graduate students of computer science and philosophy.

ContentsIntroduction - Equinumerosity - Paradoxes and axioms - Are sets all there is? - The natural numbers - Fixed points - Well ordered sets - Choices - Choice’s consequences - Baire space - Replacement and other axioms - Ordinal numbers - A. The real numbers - B. Axioms and universes - Index.

Queueing Theory: A Linear Algebraic Approach, 2eLester Lipsky, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT, USA

About the BookQueueing Theory deals with systems where there is contention for resources, but the demands are only known probabilistically. This book can be considered to be a monograph or a textbook, and thus is aimed at two audiences: those who already know Queueing Theory but would like to know more of the Linear Algebraic Approach; and as a rst course for students who don't already have a strong background in probability, and feel more comfortable with algebraic arguments. Also, the equations are well suited to easy computation. In fact, there is much discussion on how various properties can be easily computed in any language that has automatic matrix operations (e.g., MATLAB). To help with physical insight, there are over 80 gures, numerous examples and exercises distributed throughout the book. There are, perhaps 50 books on QT that are available today, and most practitioners have several of them on their shelves. This book would be a good addition, as well as a good supplement to another text. This second edition has been updated throughout including a new chapter on Semi Markov Processes and new material on matrix representations of distributions and Power-tailed distribution. Lester Lipsky is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Connecticut.

Algebraic Graph TheoryChris Godsil, University of Waterloo, ON, CanadaGordon F. Royle, University of Western Australia, Nedlands, WA, Australia

About the BookAlgebraic graph theory is a combination of two strands. The first is the study of algebraic objects associated with graphs. The second is the use of tools from algebra to derive properties of graphs. The authors' goal has been to present and illustrate the main tools and ideas of algebraic graph theory, with an emphasis on current rather than classical topics. While placing a strong emphasis on concrete examples, the authors tried to keep the treatment self-contained.

Graph TheoryAdrian Bondy, Université Claude-Bernard Lyon, FranceU.S.R. Murty, University of Waterloo, ON, Canada

About the Book"Graph theory is a flourishing discipline containing a body of beautiful and powerful theorems of wide applicability. Its explosive growth in recent years is mainly due to its role as an essential structure underpinning modern applied mathematics – computer science, combinatorial optimization, and operations research in particular – but also to its increasing application in the more applied sciences. The versatility of graphs makes them indispensable tools in the design and analysis of communication networks, for instance. The primary aim of this book is to present a coherent introduction to the subject, suitable as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in mathematics and computer science. It provides a systematic treatment of the theory of graphs without sacrificing its intuitive and aesthetic appeal. Commonly used proof techniques are described and illustrated, and a wealth of exercises - of varying levels of difficulty - are provided to help the reader master the techniques and reinforce their grasp of the material.A second objective is to serve as an introduction to research in graph theory. To this end, sections on more advanced topics are included, and a number of interesting and challenging open problems are highlighted and discussed in some detail. Despite this more advanced material, the book has been organized in such a way that an introductory course on graph theory can be based on the first few sections of selected chapters."

Modern Graph TheoryBela Bollobas, University of Memphis, TN, USA

About the BookThe time has now come when graph theory should be part of the education of every serious student of mathematics and computer science, both for its own sake and to enhance the appreciation of mathematics as a whole. This book is an in-depth account of graph theory, written with such a student in mind; it reflects the current state of the subject and emphasizes connections with other branches of pure mathematics. The volume grew out of the author's earlier book, Graph Theory -- An Introductory Course, but its length is well over twice that of its predecessor, allowing it to reveal many exciting new developments in the subject. Recognizing that graph theory is one of several courses competing for the attention of a student, the book contains extensive descriptive passages designed to convey the flavor of the subject and to arouse interest. In addition to a modern treatment of the classical areas of graph theory such as coloring, matching, extremal theory, and algebraic graph theory, the book presents a detailed account of newer topics, including Szemer'edi's Regularity Lemma and its use, Shelah's extension of the Hales-Jewett Theorem, the precise nature of the phase transition in a random graph process, the connection between electrical networks and random walks on graphs, and the Tutte polynomial and its cousins in knot theory. In no other branch of mathematics is it as vital to tackle and solve challenging exercises in order to master the subject. To this end, the book contains an unusually large number of well thought-out exercises: over 600 in total. Although some are straightforward, most of them are substantial, and others will stretch even the most able reader.

ContentsFundamentals - Electrical Networks - Flows, Connectivity and Matching - Extremal Problems - Colouring - Ramsey Theory - Random Graphs - Graphs, Groups and Matrices - Random Walks on Graphs - The Tutte Polynomial.

An Introduction to Bayesian Analysis: Theory and MethodsJayanta K. Ghosh, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USAMohan Delampady, Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore, IndiaTapas Samanta, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, India

About the BookThis is a graduate-level textbook on Bayesian analysis blending modern Bayesian theory, methods, and applications. Starting from basic statistics, undergraduate calculus and linear algebra, ideas of both subjective and objective Bayesian analysis are developed to a level where real-life data can be analyzed using the current techniques of statistical computing. Advances in both low-dimensional and high-dimensional problems are covered, as well as important topics such as empirical Bayes and hierarchical Bayes methods and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques. Many topics are at the cutting edge of statistical research. Solutions to common inference problems appear throughout the text along with discussion of what prior to choose. There is a discussion of elicitation of a subjective prior as well as the motivation, applicability, and limitations of objective priors. By way of important applications the book presents microarrays, nonparametric regression via wavelets as well as DMA mixtures of normals, and spatial analysis with illustrations using simulated and real data. Theoretical topics at the cutting edge include high-dimensional model selection and Intrinsic Bayes Factors, which the authors have successfully applied to geological mapping. The style is informal but clear. Asymptotics is used to supplement simulation or understand some aspects of the posterior.

Bayesian Core: A Practical Approach to Computational Bayesian StatisticsJean-Michel Marin, Université Paris-Sud, Orsay, FranceChristian Robert, Université Paris-Dauphine, Paris, France

About the BookThis Bayesian modeling book is intended for practitioners and applied statisticians looking for a self-contained entry to computational Bayesian statistics. Focusing on standard statistical models and backed up by discussed real datasets available from the book website, it provides an operational methodology for conducting Bayesian inference, rather than focusing on its theoretical justifications. Special attention is paid to the derivation of prior distributions in each case and specific reference solutions are given for each of the models. Similarly, computational details are worked out to lead the reader towards an effective programming of the methods given in the book. While R programs are provided on the book website and R hints are given in the computational sections of the book, The Bayesian Core requires no knowledge of the R language and it can be read and used with any other programming language. The Bayesian Core can be used as a textbook at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as exemplified by courses given at Université Paris Dauphine (France), University of Canterbury (New Zealand), and University of British Columbia (Canada). It serves as a unique textbook for a service course for scientists aiming at analyzing data the Bayesian way as well as an introductory course on Bayesian statistics. The prerequisites for the book are a basic knowledge of probability theory and of statistics. Methodological and data-based exercises are included within the main text and students are expected to solve them as they read the book. Those exercises can obviously serve as assignments, as was done in the above courses. Datasets, R codes and course slides all are available on the book website.

ContentsUser's manual - Normal models - Regression and variable selection - Generalised linear models - Capture-recapture experiments - Mixture models - Dynamic models - Image analysis.

Probability and Risk Analysis: An Introduction for EngineersIgor Rychlik, University of Lund, SwedenJesper Rydén, University of Malmö, Sweden

About the BookThis text presents notions and ideas at the foundations of a statistical treatment of risks. Such knowledge facilitates the understanding of the influence of random phenomena and gives a deeper understanding of the possibilities offered by and algorithms found in certain software packages. Since Bayesian methods are frequently used in this field, a reasonable proportion of the presentation is devoted to such techniques. The text is written with a student in mind who has studied elementary undergraduate courses in engineering mathematics, maybe including a minor course in statistics. Despite employment of the style of presentation traditionally found in the mathematics literature (including descriptions like definitions, examples, etc.). Probability and Risk Analysis emphasizes an understanding of the theory and methods presented; hence, comments are given verbally and a reasoning is frequent. With respect to the contents (and its presentation), the ambition has not been to write just another new textbook on elementary probability and statistics.

ContentsBasic Probability - Subjective Probabilities versus Long-term Frequencies - Random Variables - Fitting Distributions to Data–Frequentist Approach - Dependent Random Variables-Conditional Probabilities - Introduction to Bayesian Data Analysis - Intensities and the Poisson Process - Failure Probabilities and Safety Indexes - Characteristics Strength, Design Loads - Extremes.

The Nature of Statistical Learning Theory, 2eVladimir Vapnik, AT & T Labs Research, Red Bank, NJ, USA

About the BookThe aim of this book is to discuss the fundamental ideas which lie behind the statistical theory of learning and generalization. It considers learning as a general problem of function estimation based on empirical data. Omitting proofs and technical details, the author concentrates on discussing the main results of learning theory and their connections to fundamental problems in statistics. These include: * the setting of learning problems based on the model of minimizing the risk functional from empirical data * a comprehensive analysis of the empirical risk minimization principle including necessary and sufficient conditions for its consistency * non-asymptotic bounds for the risk achieved using the empirical risk minimization principle * principles for controlling the generalization ability of learning machines using small sample sizes based on these bounds * the Support Vector methods that control the generalization ability when estimating function using small sample size. The second edition of the book contains three new chapters devoted to further development of the learning theory and SVM techniques. These include: * the theory of direct method of learning based on solving multidimensional integral equations for density, conditional probability, and conditional density estimation * a new inductive principle of learning. About the BookThe book was developed for a one-semester course usually attended by students in statistics, economics, business, engineering, and quantitative social sciences. Basic applied statistics is assumed through multiple regression. Calculus is assumed only to the extent of minimizing sums of squares but a calculus-based introduction to statistics is necessary for a thorough understanding of some of the theory. However, required facts concerning expectation, variance, covariance, and correlation are reviewed in appendices. Also, conditional expectation properties and minimum mean square error prediction are developed in appendices. Actual time series data drawn from various disciplines are used throughout the book to illustrate the methodology. The book contains additional topics of a more advanced nature that could be selected for inclusion in a course if the instructor so chooses.

ContentsIntroduction.- Fundamental Concepts.- Trends.- Models for Stationary Time Series.- Models for Nonstationary Time Series.- Model Specification.- Parameter Estimation.- Model Diagnostics.- Forecasting.- Seasonal Models.- Time Series Regression Models.- Time Series Models of Heteroscedasticity.- Introduction to Spectral Analysis.- Estimating the Spectrum.- Threshold Models.
