Special Olympics at UCLA Special Olympics at UCLA is a student-run organization that provides a safe and healthy environment for adults who are intellectually disabled to improve their skills in various sports, build self-confidence, and develop a healthy lifestyle together with UCLA volunteers. Our mission is three-fold: 1. To develop teamwork, self-confidence, and promote a healthy lifestyle within the context of athletics for our athletes. 2. To provide safe and positive venues for communication, long-term relationship building, and mutual understanding between our service recipients and volunteers. 3. To raise awareness on issues related to the intellectually disabled community both within UCLA and the greater Los Angeles community at large. Practices are held every Saturday morning from 9:45am-11:45am. Bus duty is supervised by directors and members in the morning before practice, from 8:30am to 9:30am, and the afternoon after practice, from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. On occasions such as cross- training, field trips, or competitions, practices are replaced with these events and scheduling is adjusted accordingly. We seek individuals who are passionate about the intellectually disabled population. No prior experience is required. However, we expect our coaches to be responsible, compassionate, and dedicated. If you are selected to be Special Olympics coach, you will be required to do the following. All members are considered “coaches” once they have finished Class A Orientation and Certification through Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC). Coaches must attend at least three practices each quarter and complete at least one full bus duty (morning and afternoon). Further responsibilities will be outlined during training.
