THE VOTES ARE IN BEST OF THE WESTSHORE - brought to you by the Westshore Chamber & the Goldstream Gazette

GOLDSTREAM NEWS GAZETTE - Friday, October 30, 2015 www.goldstreamgazette.com • A15

It has been an exciting year on the West Shore since becoming publisher of one of the fastest growing newspapers in the Black Press chain of over 125 titles. After working on the West Shore for over 5 years, I still enjoy this great community, where every day is different and we have great news stories coming to us from the residents and businesses.

The five Municipalities have seen some exciting change in the past few years; projects that seemed just a blip on the horizon are completed, businesses open and people benefit from their presence in the local area. The new Holiday Inn Express is now open and they will welcome new businesses into their retail space on the ground floor including the Coast Collective. Our new schools, years in the making, are now open and students are working through their first semesters at the new locations. Omicron is well under way with their Eagle Creek Village development in View Royal and we are excited about the increased job opportunities that come along with such a huge build. Keycorp has launched a new development on Bear Mountain in the Echo Valley neighbourhood, Echo Vista will be mainly rancher homes and we look forward to welcoming a new community into the Langford area. The District of Highlands has completed their new fire hall. There is lots of great activity around the region and numerous new projects planned for the upcoming months and years.

We are very proud to partner with the WestShore Chamber of Commerce on this, the first Best of the West Shore; we hope that you will enjoy reading about our readers’ choices for all the “Best Ofs.” We were thrilled at the response to our newspaper ballots and also to the online survey. We received well over 1,000 completed ballots and feel these rankings have given us a good snapshot of what our readers like.

Hopefully we have covered all the popular choices for business and community in this year’s inaugural publication and welcome any suggestions for next year. Inside the pages you will find everything from Best Place for Free Fun to the Best U-Brew, Best Place to Take a Selfie to Best Holistic Medicine and lots of categories in between.

Thanks to everyone who responded to the survey and thanks to every one of my staff at the Goldstream Gazette who contributed to this great feature; we all hope you enjoy it.

One of the things I love about the West Shore is the diversity of what’s on offer. From beauty spots to big businesses, owner/operator entrepreneurs to organizations serving the community, there is so much going on here. I’m therefore delighted that the 2015 Best of the West Shore Awards represents this diversity. The Awards were entirely determined by public vote this year, and we’ve been surprised and pleased at the level of interest generated. Normally we might expect that some categories would attract less attention than others, but as it turns out numerous votes were cast in all 34 business and 7 community categories. The other great thing is that voting has covered all five municipalities of the West Shore – Colwood, Highlands, Langford, Metchosin and View Royal.

The Best of the West Shore Awards is brought to you through a partnership between The Goldstream News Gazette and the WestShore Chamber of Commerce. You will know the Gazette as your community newspaper, and the WestShore Chamber is your local Chamber. We are a non-profit organization advancing growth, prosperity and sustainability

of business and community life on the West Shore. The WestShore Chamber has 380 members who pay an annual membership fee, and it is thanks to our members and the support of the City of Colwood and the City of Langford that we can support our local community and advocate on their behalf. There are lots of benefits to being a Chamber member so for more information you can go to westshore.bc.ca

Having made my pitch, I can tell you that some of the awards finalists are Chamber members and some are not. In all cases, it’s been a real pleasure to make a phone call to tell someone that they have been publically voted into the top three of their award category. The calls I have particularly enjoyed are the ones where the person at the other end of the phone says “I have?” [been voted into the top three.] “How did that happen?” It is particularly heartwarming that this happens when, as one of the finalists said to me, “well we just keep our heads down and get on with our business, and admit when we make a mistake and try and give our customers the best possible service.” Yes – that’s why they voted for you!

On behalf of our President Doug Kobayashi, the Board of Directors of the WestShore Chamber of Commerce and our volunteers and staff, congratulations to all the finalists and to everyone who has been nominated! Thank you too for everyone who voted for your favourites as we couldn’t have done it without you.

And last but not least, thank you to our partner The Goldstream News Gazette, Title Sponsor Peninsula Co-op, Venue Sponsor The Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort & Spa, Award Sponsor Heritage House Trophies, Photography Sponsor PIV Photography, Media Sponsor Bell Media, and our Gold Sponsors Camosun College Co-operative Education & Student Employment, Island Savings Credit Union, Royal Roads University, The University of Victoria Co-operative Education Program & Career Services and View Royal Casino. We are grateful for your support!

Where the WestShore has fun making award winning wines!

Just over a year ago on October 4, 2014 Moksha Yoga opened on the Westshore. “What makes our studio so unique, and unlike many other yoga studios is the vision to cater to students most unlikely to walk into a studio.” explained owner Darci Nyal. “Whether it is an athlete concerned about injury prevention or a mother with a high-stress job we make it welcoming to all levels and body types.”

“I am so honoured by the nomination for Best Business Owner.” said Nyal. “We try every day to make sure everyone has a positive, joyful experience here at Moksha Yoga.”

Nyal is quick to give credit to her business partner Heather McLeod from Moksha Yoga Victoria. “This community wouldn’t be where it is today without her there, so I don’t actually feel like I’ve been nominated, but we’ve been nominated. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. The Westshore has been very welcoming and loyal.”

BEST BUSINESS OWNER 2015

Twenty- ve years have come and gone since Gary Preston opened his rst EZ Lube here on the Westshore. “We worked seven days a week in the shop downstairs and lived in the rafters.” he laughs.Gary started the business with his brother on Old Island Highway. When their lease ran out they moved to the new location on Jacklin Road in 2001 and in 2008 Gary became sole owner.“The key to success is providing exceptional customer service.” Preston stated. “We’ve been doing it for over 25 years.” He attributes much of that success to his great crew headed by manager Ron Vincent.“I am very very honoured and humbled to have been nominated for this award. I couldn’t have done it without the continued support of my family, my wife Danielle and sons Eric and Je .”

When asked how he felt about being voted one of the Best Business Owners on the Westshore Phil Dagger said, “I am extremely flattered.”

Phil, formerly a chef says he loves coming to work every day at Galaxy Motors and would be happy to work until he was 85.

When asked what has led to the success behind Galaxy Motors, who opened 2 more locations this year bringing their total to 5 locations, Phil’s answer is quite simple, “treat customers the same way you expect to be treated yourself.” And that philosophy has lead to the success of their dealerships around the island and now on the lower mainland.

Galaxy Motors prides itself on its community involvement and giving back, from donating cars to families in need to constantly doing food drives and helping local families out with holiday hampers.

THE VOTES ARE IN BEST OF THE WESTSHORE - brought to you by the Westshore Chamber & the Goldstream Gazette

What’s new in our municipalities?

Langford’s Mayor Stew Young said 20 years ago there wasn’t a heck of a lot to do in Langford but obviously many things have changed. With the influx of young families and new local businesses, Langford is one of the fastest growing cities

anywhere. Young said recent initiatives include the new Belmont secondary school, the YMCA/YWCA pool and the reopening of the Langford Lanes.

He said the housing market draws in young families, local businesses provide them with a place to work but they still need recreation to keep them in the area, it’s about the balance of a community.

“Council has done an amazing job,” said Young in terms of finding innovative partnerships for big recreational projects.

“The residents are awesome,” he said. “They don’t have to go anywhere, it’s a self sustainable community.”

And Young said Council is always looking for new projects to keep the area thriving and its residents entertained. He knows there’s more to life than just working.

With stunning ocean views, long stretches of beaches and a rich history, Colwood is one of the West Shore gems. Mayor Carol Hamilton and Colwood’s council have been working hard to polish that gem so it can shine as brightly as possibly. The City has undertaken many projects to help beautify the area while improving infrastructures and making the area safer for all of its residents.

Like other West Shore municipalities Colwood continues to grow. To meet these expanding needs

the new Royal Bay high school was completed just in time for the beginning of this school year. While a few finishing touches are still being applied to the school, council has been working hard to connect the school with the rest of the community. Hamilton said Latoria Boulevard and Ryder Hesjedal Way are now open, offering more accessibility for the community.

Colwood is also developing an Age Friendly Community Plan to ensure the community is safe and welcoming for residents of all ages and abilities. Keeping with that theme of improving the quality of life for its residents, council also recently approved the Colwood Transportation Master Plan to improve how everyone moves around Colwood, making it more sustainable, not just for residents but for everyone that travels through the municipality.

Hamilton also invited residents to the Colwood Christmas Light Up at the City Hall building on Dec. 9 for music, food and fun.

THE VOTES ARE IN BEST OF THE WESTSHORE - brought to you by the Westshore Chamber & the Goldstream Gazette

View Royal is known for so much more than just its rabbits. Between its lush trails, new fire hall, recreation facilities

and picturesque neighbourhoods View Royal has lots to offer its residents and is always looking for ways to draw more positive growth into the community.

View Royal Mayor David Screech said “there are three major projects happening right now in View Royal.” There is the Eagle Creek development by the hospital with an anticipated opening date of January 2016. The anchor tenant for that development is Quality Foods but the site will also include a daycare and other YMCA/YWCA facilities.

On Six Mile Road, near Thetis Lake, a new commercial development is progressing quickly. He said this site will include a neighbourhood grocery store, similar to the Red Barn concept but run by a different company. He also pointed to the new Ashley Furniture being built on the Six Mile strip where the old Six Mile Furniture was.

View Royal has all of your needs covered.

Mayor Ken Williams thinks the Highlands is the best of the West Shore and its residents would agree with him. The wonderfully rural allure of the Highlands

draws many people to the area. Events ranging from the District’s monthly music Coffee House to broom pulling campaigns have a way of not just rallying residents but drawing in folks from neighbouring communities as well.

But the District isn’t just about community gatherings. Williams said there are many plans in the works for the future growth of the area, including the 32-acre industrial park, that will take years to complete. A number of smaller projects like the new museum, community hall and East Fire Hall have been completed this year, all of which have been big news for the small community. And Council is always looking to the future for new projects to meet the growing needs of the area.

Williams said much of the success and progress is due to the incredible volunteers in the community. He thanks them heartily and said “the community really cares and comes out and supports everything.”

Metchosin is known for its rural lifestyle and

the myriad of recreational parks in the area. Its population of just over 5,000 are laid back and content with the quiet lifestyle the area can offer. Artists, retirees, farmers and small lot owners make up that population.

The municipality offers a year-round golf course, summer school for arts, farmers’ market and several locally-owned businesses. But that hyper-local perspective and approach enables the community to thrive. By supporting their neighbours, residents are able to enjoy handmade, locally-grown goodness all year round.

When asked what is happening in Metchosin, Mayor John Ranns said, “nothing and that’s the way we want it.”

Ranns described his community, “it’s paradise as far as we’re concerned.” He’s pretty happy with that and Metchosin residents are bound to agree with him.

THE VOTES ARE IN BEST OF THE WESTSHORE - brought to you by the Westshore Chamber & the Goldstream Gazette

Shopping at its Best on the West ShoreIt is not hard to find what you are looking for on

the West Shore, we have a wealth of great stores, everything ranging from big box national companies to small local treasures where we can find that special something. Everyone is familiar with the drive to Costco and the larger stores that grace the Millstream Village area, we all love Westshore Town Centre and Winners for example; we wouldn’t be without our national stores as they make up the fabric of this community and provide jobs for many. We also love our local gems, some of which have been voted among the best retailers in the Best of the Westshore along with the larger national brands.

Capital Iron opened its doors on the West Shore April of 2014 and they have been a welcome addition to the Westshore family of stores, as their slogan states there

really is “no store like it”. Inside the doors of this iconic store you can find everything from outdoor fireplaces and kitchens, amazing camping gear and some truly creative home décor ideas. They love being a part of

the West Shore and enjoy meeting the needs of the young and vastly growing family community.

Curvalicious offers the curvy ladies of the Westshore some trendy choices for their wardrobes with their store tucked away in Goldstream Station over beside D’arcys. Sarah Frejd owner of this popular boutique says the sucess of her store is based on the quality of her clothes, that they have sizes for all women and they offer an atmosphere that is both engaging and inviting to all.

Carolyn Barter at Baja Rosi’s is no stranger to awards and is thrilled to be nominated Best on the Westshore

for Second Hand Shopping. “My store offers sustainable fashion solutions and we have been doing that for over 10 years on the Westshore” Carolyn has won the Best on the City top award for the past 5 years and is delighted to be recognized in her own community as well. With tons of great finds at fantastic prices Baja Rosis offers the best in consignment shopping.

With 2 hugely successful malls on the West Shore and a number of strip malls with everything from used furniture and books to nail salons, a bridal boutique, many choices for fine wine and spirits, the West Shore is a self contained community catering to all the wants and needs of its residents. We love our coffee! We all know how much West Shore residents love their coffee.

For some, it may be the only thing getting them through the day and for others it’s a much needed excuse to socialize. There’s just something about the atmosphere of a coffee house that makes you want to pull up a chair with a good friend and chat for hours.

Taking the top honours among many favourite nesting spots is Skookum Food and Coffee. While offering many gourmet treats and of course coffee, Skookum offers more than just an alluring ambience. Skookum is a unique program that offers a safe and supportive environment that creates opportunities for youth to gain employment experience and life skills through intensive training to help operate the bistro while learning important lessons about running a business.

“We serve handmade, locally sourced, gourmet products and proudly cater for regional businesses and other organizations. Customers who bring their business to our bistro know that they are not only receiving food and drink of high quality, they are also supporting local youth, now and for their future,” said Mitzi Dean, executive director. “The goodwill and consistent patronage of customers is vital to the continued success of this program.”

With a store front at 2829 Peatt Rd. in Langford, Evedar’s Bistro is so much more than just a popular spot to enjoy a cup of joe. Boasting a full menu for each meal of the day, prepared by a Red Seal Chief, Evedar’s is also a perfect spot to enjoy a meal and a great cup of coffee.

Not to be outdone is the ever popular Pilgrim Coffee House in Colwood, 1910 Sooke Rd. West Shore residents rave about the level of service staff provide, making visitors feel more like a friend than a customer. Their delicious delights also keep residents returning for more.

Those bigger coffee chains are also making an impression on West Shore residents.

Serious Coffee started in Duncan back in 1994 and is a locally grown chain that many West Shore residents are happy to support. With over 24 locations across the Island, patrons can enjoy their favourite drinks even when

they’re not on the West Shore. With a quality selection that’s always expanding to include more organic and fairly-traded selections, there’s bound to be something on the menu for everyone.

Most drivers know better than to get between another vehicle and a Starbucks drive-through before 10 a.m. With several locations on the West Shore, some even hosting drive-throughs, Starbucks fans are a devoted bunch, even if pumpkin spice lattes are only available for a limited time every year.

No list would be complete without Canada’s own Tim Hortons chain. With several locations across the West Shore, Tim Hortons has earned a special place in residents’ hearts earning them a spot on our list with visions of ice caps and donuts dancing in our heads.

So whether you’re looking for something to get you going in the morning, a pick-me-up in the afternoon, or something to wrap your hands around while sharing stories with a friend, the West Shore has all of your caffeine needs covered.

Great Eats - Mainstay of the West ShoreThere are many, many restaurants in the West Shore

who offer up delectable and exotic cuisine as well as traditional but exceptional favourites. From burgers at Bin 4 to My Chosen Cafe to Thai food at Sabhai Thai, East Indian flavours at Tumeric and Vietnamese offering at Green Leaf Bistro.

But a old and never tired pizza place won the hearts of voters.

Pizzability’s Alan Brown believes the pizza he makes at Pizzability is considered the best of the West Shore because it is made by hand by happy staff.

Pizzability is on Sooke Road at the Glen Lake Inn, beside Bucky’s Tavern and Glen Lake Liquor, an expansion from the shop in Sooke. The new outlet is bigger and Brown thinks the tight knit communityand great staff connect.

Brown was “shocked” to hear Pizzability had been nominated in the Best Of West Shore Awards. He said

he feels they were nominated because they are small enough and it is family run. The staff are also a large part of the success of the business.

“Happy staff equals tasty pizza,” said Brown.

“We care,” he said. “We want people to be happy and we want to grow and be successful.”

Pizzability started out as a side business for Alan’s father Clive. Alan made good money delivering pizza and one day discovered his father had bought the business he worked at. Now he manages the Pizzability outlet and he said he loves it.

“I definitely didn’t plan it, it was meant to be and I really enjoy doing it.”

He wants to get more involved in the community and the West Shore Chamber of Commerce but as the father of young twin girls his time is at a premium.

“I love the West Shore,” he said.

Champions on the West Shore. There is no shortage of athletes on the West Shore. While we enjoy cheering them all on, in a great variety of areas and parks, we

all have our favourite team that holds a little extra special place in our hearts.

You’ve voted and taking the top spots in the hearts of fans are the Victoria Grizzlies, the Westshore Rebels and the Victoria Shamrocks. It seems West Shore residents like a variety of action to keep them entertained.

West Shore residents love their hockey. A fact that is evident if you have ever stepped foot into one of the area’s several areas. It’s easy to get swept up into the board pounding action that comes from players lacing up their skates and giving it their all until the final buzzer. It’s easier to support that team when they are so involved in the community and helping children learn the game we all seem to love.

“The Grizzlies are proud to play in the West Shore and provide Greater Victoria with an affordable, family-focused sports entertainment option. So many people and businesses in the West Shore get behind the team and that helps build community pride and profile, which is great for this fast-growing area,” said Grizzlies vice president Sonya Saujani.

The Westshore Rebels also have a long and rich history of being part of the West Shore community. While the team has changed names a number of times over the years their core values continued to thrive to create the organization West Shore residents know and love today. The team not only relies on the help of community members to host its players but also believes in giving back to that community in as many ways as it can.

“The Westshore Rebels football organization prides itself in being involved in the West Shore and Greater Victoria communities,” said Jason Sperling, Rebels director of community and media relations. “As an organization we are committed to building strong relationships with our neighbours, sponsors and each other. Our program is not only training football players but also teaching young men to have a positive impact on their community. The Rebels players, coaches, alumni and directors volunteered over 209 hours in 2014 and we are on par to beat that this year. Thanks to everyone in our community for supporting the Westshore Rebels and the nomination for favourite local sports team.”

But nothing draws out fans more than a winning streak, especially when it’s in the playoffs. The Victoria Shamrocks drew crowds to The Q Centre back in September as they made a run for the Mann Cup. Many of the final round games were standing room only and the energy was electric has fans cheered their team on to the win. That excitement won’t soon be forgotten and it’s no surprise the Shamrocks are still one of West Shore residents’ favourite teams.

Shamrocks head coach Bob Heyes said the support of West Shore fans has played “a big part” in the success of the team. “Since we’ve moved to the West Shore they’ve really embraced the team.” He said the fans are like an extra player on the floor. “They offer a great atmosphere the guys love to play in.”

Heyes also noted that the number of children playing lacrosse on the West Shore has also been on the rise and the team tries to give back to the community by mentoring young players with events such as clinics. “There’s a lot of kids that want to be Shamrocks,” he said.

- The Saunders Family

The Coffee is always on!Bob Saunders was born in Duncan in 1935, the

fourth of five children. Through the depression years, he worked at his father’s automotive business and there learned the importance of treating customers fairly and honestly. In 1956 he married Norma and together they raised their five children in the old farm house they still call home. The family grew all of their own vegetables there and raised chickens, cows and pigs. Their children Ruth, Edie and Dave all work with Bob and Norma at Saunders Subaru while Helen is a high school principal in Ft. St. John and Steve is a guide and outfitter in Prince George. They also share eleven grandchildren and rarely miss a hockey, lacrosse or baseball game. They love all sports, especially Norma..

In 1978 following a successful career in car sales Bob decided to open Saunders Subaru on Old Island Highway. As the dealership grew they needed someone to do the accounting and manage the “behind the scenes” management. Norma, who was a successful realtor with Block Bros. at the time, gave up her career to join the dealership. It was Norma who negotiated the real estate purchases for the property where Saunders Subaru now sits.

Honesty, integrity and the importance of giving back to the community are what define Saunders Subaru. Very few who walk in the door needing help are ever turned away.

“People come in the door needing a hand for their organization or sports team and sometimes

just for themselves.” explained son Dave Saunders “It is my Dad who listens to them and asks the questions and then he goes and asks Mom. That sometimes gruff exterior hides the marshmallow interior …. Mom can’t say no to anyone in need. Growing up we never knew who was going to be at the supper table, especially for Christmas, Mom has to try and help everyone.” he smiled. It must be a family trait.

T h e S a u n d e r s Fa m i l y Foundation was started five years ago. They raise money annually which goes back into the community. One way a foundation works is to build up a large fund and then give out the interest each year, not this one. Every penny raised goes back to the community. There are no administration costs. One thing they are especially proud of is the Comfy Kids Program which helps support kids in the community fighting cancer. Saunders Subaru provides cars to take the children to treatments. They have a network of businesses they have brought on board to help. Peninsula Co-op provides the fuel for the cars; HUB provides the insurance and Harbour Air will provide transport if there just isn’t time to drive. Other

businesses have come on board to help, Accent Inns provides room at their property in Vancouver when it is needed; HHS Drilling and Blasting helped outfit and equip the Oncology Room at VGH; Coast Capital Savings helps families come up with a financial plan that will take them through this trying time, the list goes on.

Bob and Norma Saunders are pillars of the Westshore Business Community. Just their longevity would define them as such, but they are so much more. They provide an example of what dedication to hard work, family and community can achieve.

Adams Storage began operation at their View Royal location over 30 years ago and have grown into a company with five storage facilities on the South Island as well as rental trucks and portable storage under their MoBox brand. “It’s all about customer service.” Jim Adams explained. “We have a passion for what we do and when we heard some of the bad experiences our clients were having with truck rentals we decided it was something that would fit well with our company.” The portable storage began with the same motivation. A crane truck drops off the steel shipping container at your location and things can be moved into it while you are renovating or moving. We come and pick it up at your convenience and either take it to one of our storage facilities or move it to your new home.”

You can expect stress-free storage experience at Westshore ULock. U-Lock Mini Storage has been in business for over 32 years. Their well trained staff are there to help select the right unit to meet any need, commercial or residential. They carefully manage ventilation and cleanliness carefully maintaining state of the art security and climate control. Westshore ULock also stocks everything necessary for moving and storing belongings. “We look forward to continuing to provide great self-storage sites, with state of the art security systems, heated units, all steel construction, convenience access hours and great customer service.”

Millstream Self Storage is located on Millstream Road past Home Depot. This family owned storage facility was built in 2001 and offers units from 3’ x 5’ to 14’ x 20’. Their secure, immaculately clean, easy load units are used by both residential and commercial clients alike. They also carry packing supplies, boxes and locks and even an economical insurance option. “Our friendly, well trained staff are all about customer service. Temporary or long term storage, full households or just seasonal items, we have every size unit to fit our client’s needs.” Explained manager Julie Marchak.
