Thousands of B.C. children are injured every year

With less than a week to go until school returns, ICBC is asking parents to begin pre-paring children for get-ting to and from school safely. Every year in B.C., an average of 30 children aged five to 18 are killed and 5,100 in-jured in 14,700 crashes.

“As children across the province return to school in a couple of weeks, it’s the ideal time for parents to re-view the rules of the road with their chil-dren and take the time to go over their daily route with them,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Every-one should plan ahead for the return of the school season because the roads will be much busier, so remember to leave earlier to avoid rushing, stay focused on the road and use extra caution, espe-cially around school zones.”

“Police across the province will be close-ly monitoring speeds in school zones to make sure drivers stick to the 30-km/h speed limit,” said Chief Constable Jamie Gra-ham, Chair of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee. “We want children to get a safe start to the school year so we’re asking drivers to be extra careful on our roads and watch for children.”

“The start of the school year is a busy time for children and a return back to reg-ular routines for par-ents,” said John Dick-inson, ICBC’s director of road safety. “That’s why we’re encouraging parents to start talking to their children now about using extra cau-tion when the school season begins. Even older children should

be reminded to remove earbuds and head-phones when walking and always make eye contact with drivers.”

Here are ICBC’s tips for drivers, parents and students to help everyone stay safe as school returns:

Tips for driversWhen school is back

in session, don’t for-get that every school day, unless otherwise posted, a 30 km/h speed limit is in effect in school zones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

When you’re drop-ping off your children in school zones, stop and allow them to exit the car on the side closest to the sidewalk. Never allow a child to cross mid-block.

If a vehicle is stopped in front of you or in the lane next to you, they may be yielding to a pedestrian, so be pre-pared to stop. Always yield to pedestrians – it’s the law.

School buses will be back on our roads. Vehicles approaching from both directions must stop for school buses when their lights are flashing.

Before getting into your vehicle, make a habit of walking around your vehicle

to make sure no small children are behind it. Always look for pe-destrians when you’re backing up.

Tips for parents and students:

Post these safety tips in your home and re-view them with your children – even older children need to be reminded about road

safety.Remove your head-

phones and put away your phone or other gadgets when cross-ing the street. Focus on the road so you can see, hear and respond safely.

Make eye contact with drivers, so you both know you see each other.

Road safety lessons should be fun and in-teractive.

Teach your child to cross at intersections that have a pedestri-an crossing light or a marked crosswalk whenever possible. Even at a crosswalk, be aware of traffic and always make sure that vehicles are stopped before walking. Use designated crossing points and follow pe-destrian traffic signs and signals.

Dress to be seen. Wear bright or light coloured clothing. In dark or bad weather, wear reflective materi-al on clothes or acces-sories.

Heritage Park Sec-ondary School grad-uate Vipan Aulakh has received a $2,000 scholarship from Envi-sion Financial.

Fourteen education awards from the cred-it union are given out each year to second-ary and post secondary students throughout the province who have demonstrated out-standing scholarship ability and exceptional community volunteer service.

Aulakh has been an avid volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the MSA Museum and var-ious other community organizations.

She has also shown a commitment to her senior girls basketball, rugby and Grade 8 bas-ketball teams as both

player and coach.Aulakh plans to use

the funds to pursue her bachelors degree in commerce at the University of British Columbia.

“Envision is proud to assist such deserving

students with their educational pursuits,” says Envision Finan-cial President Shel-ley Besse. “Envision is committed to making a real difference in the lives of our mem-bers and communi-ties. Whether through

Since 1996, the En-vision Financial Ed-ucation Award hashelped a total of 196high-school andpost-secondary stu-dents finance theireducations, and hasdisbursed over a halfmillion dollars in fund-ing across British Co-lumbia.

Trips and falls on the playground may account for the ma-jority of injuries that send school children to the nurse’s office, but backpacks cause their fair share of injuries as well.

Children routinely carry more than the recommended weight

in school backpacks and, compounding the problem, also carry their bags incorrectly.

Doctors recommend that a child’s backpack should weigh no more than 10 to 20 percent of the child’s body weight. However, this figure should be adjusted based on a child’s fit-

ness level and strength. That means that the average seven-year-old second grader who weighs between 55 and 60 pounds should be carrying no more than 11 to 12 pounds in his or her backpack. A backpack that is too heavy may cause:

Red marks on the

shoulders or back from the straps

Tingling or numb-ness in the arms and back

Changes in pos-ture when wearing the backpack, and

Pain anywhere in the back.

To compound these problems, which also

may include nerve damage resulting from pressure on nerves in the shoulders, children should lighten their loads and carry back-packs correctly. The fol-lowing tips are some additional ways young-sters can prevent back-pack-related injuries.

Carry only nec-essary items. Children should only carry what is required for that particu-lar school day in their back-packs. If teach-ers routinely have students carry home many heavy books, parents can consult with the teach-ers to see if there are other options.

Distribute weight evenly.

Items in the backpack should be spread out to distribute the weight across the entire back. Heavier items should be at the bottom of the pack.

Use both straps. Using only one strap shifts the backpack weight to one side, causing the back and

shoulders to strain. Many orthopedistshave reported treatingchildren with back orshoulder pain as theresult of carrying back-packs incorrectly.

Lift safely. Childrenshould lift their back-packs by bending theirknees and lifting toprotect their backs.

There are somesafety features par-

ents can look forwhen purchas-ing backpacks.A padded backreduces pres-sure on themuscles andcan be morecomfortable, while com-

pression strapsmake the back-

pack more sturdy.Additionally, reflec-

tive material on thebackpack can makethe child more visibleto motorists.

Enjoying a meal together on a weeknight is a goal for many families. But adults often find themselves pressed for time on weeknights, and that time crunch can make it difficult to enjoy a home-cooked meal.

But time is not the only thing getting in the way of family meals. Be it after school activities, long com-mutes or late hours at the office, many things can make it difficult for a family to sit down and enjoy a meal to-gether. Studies have shown that families who eat togeth-er tend to eat healthier, as parents can more effectively monitor their kids’ diets.

While it may not be feasible for parents and kids to scale back their busy schedules, there are steps parents can take to make weeknight meal

preparation quicker. By short-ening the time it takes to make meals on weeknights, families might be able to sit down to dinner together more often.

The most effective way to make more time for fam-ily meals is to plan ahead. Planning meals on the fly en-courages everyone to fend for themselves, making it diffi-cult for families to enjoy nu-tritious meals they can eat together. Plan for the coming week’s meals on the week-end, when you can survey your pantry and make a trip to the grocery store if need be.

Dinner does not have be served hot, and cold meals often take less time to pre-pare. Consider serving salad or sandwiches on those nights when you are espe-

cially pressed for time. When serving sandwiches, serve them on whole grain bread to add some nutritional value to the meal.

Turn breakfast into din-ner. There are no laws regard-ing what qualifies as dinner and what does not, so fam-ilies without much time on their hands on a weeknight can turn breakfast into din-ner. Eggs are both quick and easy to prepare, and they can be served alongside toast and grapefruit. When making om-elets for dinner, add some spinach or another vegetable to make the meal more nu-tritious.

Lean on seafood more often. Seafood can be healthy and delicious, but that’s not the only reason it’s an ally to time-strapped families. Sea-

food should not take muchtime to cook, as even thosedishes that take more timethan simpler dishes like sau-teed shrimp will still take lessthan 30 minutes to complete.

Leftovers are often rel-egated to lunch, but extrasfrom a meal cooked over theweekend can be used as aquick go-to meal on a hecticweeknight. If the family en-joyed the meal the first timearound, there’s no reason theywon’t enjoy it again. Wheneating leftovers for dinner, make sure the leftovers arefresh, but try to avoid servingleftovers the night after theywere initially cooked.

Enjoy meals as a family is agreat way for families to eathealthy and stay engaged inone another’s lives.

Parents often note that kids seem to grow like weeds. Pants that once reached to the tops of a young-ster’s feet quickly be-come too short, while once-loose shirts may soon become too snug. Many parents find themselves regularly in children’s clothing departments stocking up on the basics, which can put quite a dent in already stretched-thin

budgets.Although children’s

wardrobes are added to at various times of the year, the bulk of shopping occurs just before the school year begins. Though cloth-ing can be expensive, families need not bust their budgets when shopping for kids’ clothing. By shopping smart and concentrat-ing on fashion staples, it’s easier to stretch

money further. Spread out pur-

chases.Staggering purchas-

es also enables parents to develop a clothing allowance each and every month instead of having one large bill at a certain point in the year. Parents can even add to their children’s wardrobes during the holiday season, when clothes tend to get re-duced again for holi-day sales.

Don’t discount hand-me-downs.

Take stock of what you already have.

Invest in the right high-quality pieces. Spending a fortune for a trendy pair of pants that may end up get-ting ruined on the playground is not the best way to shop for kids’ clothing. Howev-er, investing in a qual-ity pair of shoes that will last much of the year is a good invest-ment. Know when to splurge and when it’s okay to shop at the dis-count store.

Stock up on sta-ples. A straight-leg cut of jeans, some solid co-loured polo shirts and an A-line dress or skirt

are some classic foun-dation pieces for chil-dren’s wardrobes. Suchitems tend to last lon-ger than trendy itemsthat may only last afew months before thenext trend arrives.

Learn to layer. Lay-ering items can makepieces look like new byputting them togetherin different combina-tions. Layering a sum-mer T-shirt under afall hoodie gets use outof two different sea-son’s worth of clothes. It also enables kids tobe comfortable duringunpredictable weather.

Leave it to the kids.Parents often worryabout what other par-ents will think of theirown children’s cloth-ing. Children do nottypically worry aboutsuch things until theirpreteen or teenageyears. You may spendless money on clothingsimply because yourchild has a few favour-ite shirts and pants heor she wears over andover. That’s less laun-dry for you and lessmoney you have tospend on new clothes.

Back to school can be a stressful time for some children, but there are ways for parents to help.

“The start of the school year can be a really positive time, full of new opportunities for young peo-ple, but it can also be overwhelm-ing for some,” explained Dr. Connie Coniglio, B.C. Mental Health and Addiction Services. “If your child isn’t looking forward to school, they may be experiencing stress or anxi-ety. While some children and youth thrive on the back-to-school excite-ment, others may need a calming, reassuring environment to support them during this transition.”

Anxiety — feeling worried, ner-vous, fearful — is normal from time to time in adults and children, but it’s a problem if your child seems to be anxious often when other chil-dren of the same age are typically not

Signs and symptoms to watch for: Attempts to remain at home or

with caregiver Refusal to attend school on cer-

tain days (field trips) Refusal to eat in public Refusal to use public bathrooms Extreme shyness, avoiding so-

cial situations or events Tantrums, crying, screaming Constant worrying Physical complaints with no

medical explanation (stomach aches, headaches, difficulty catch-ing breath)

Seeking comfort/reassurance Tips for parents and caregivers:Provide regular routines  – morn-

ing, school, homework, bedtimeProvide clear expectations, limits

and consequencesPlan for transitions – getting to

school, returning to school after breaks

Help your child identify his or her feelings – nervous, intimidated, shy

Pay attention to your child’s feel-ings

Ask your child if they have ideas or solutions for a particular concern

Show yourself identifying your own feelings, problem solving and being brave

Remain calm when your child is anxious

Hold realistic expectations that are right for child’s age

Praise and reward even their small accomplishments.

Watch for and reduce back-to-school anxiety
