February 2014 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com 94 SPECIAL FEATURE ║ HAROLD LEIGHTON I have had strong feelings for many years that the Oscars should nominate hairdress- ers for an award. Without hairdressers the actors/actresses would never get that cer- tain hair look and image, without that pro- fessional hairdressers touch in conjunction with fashion designers. Example –Go see the movie: Made in Dagenham. When you see these beautiful looking actors/actresses all glammed up wearing $50,000 worth of gowns from Valentino, jew- els from Graff, shoes from Jimmy Choo and then occasionally: - tatty, untidy, scruffy look- ing hair it really does not make any sense to me. It’s a lost opportunity to get beautiful pro- fessional looking locks in the headlines. Where are our creative men and women from the hair industry? All fashion indus- tries need a boost from time to time. A new design in fabric or a skirt length perhaps? A drape showing off more skin or a new heel on a shoe. It’s about time we gave that boost to the hair industry. In one breath, I say it’s about time that the hair industry had their own Oscar Nomina- tions for ‘Best Hair’ just like ‘Best Movie’ but then again, the session hairdressers have lost their way over the past few years and I can understand why the film industry has missed them out. But who knows this year? For this article I have selected some beau- tiful hair photographs from The Helen Op- penheim Hair Fashion Archives. Her collec- tion of works she produced for La Coupe are just so beautiful and should be seen again for inspiration. I love this industry and the people too much to let this be bypassed into the history books. ALL PHOTOGRAPHS PRODUCED AND DIRECTED BY HELEN OPPENHEIM. I have had strong feelings for many years that the Oscars should nominate hairdress-ers for an award. Without hairdressers the actors/actresses would never get that cer-tain hair look and image, without that pro-fessional hairdressers touch in conjunction with fashion designers. Example –Go see the movie: Made in Dagenham.

When you see these beautiful looking actors/actresses all glammed up wearing $50,000 worth of gowns from Valentino, jew-els from Graff, shoes from Jimmy Choo and then occasionally: - tatty, untidy, scruffy look-ing hair it really does not make any sense to me. It’s a lost opportunity to get beautiful pro-fessional looking locks in the headlines.

Where are our creative men and women from the hair industry? All fashion indus-tries need a boost from time to time. A new design in fabric or a skirt length perhaps? A drape showing off more skin or a new heel on a shoe. It’s about time we gave that boost to the hair industry.

In one breath, I say it’s about time that the hair industry had their own Oscar Nomina-tions for ‘Best Hair’ just like ‘Best Movie’ but then again, the session hairdressers have lost their way over the past few years and I can understand why the film industry has missed them out. But who knows this year?

For this article I have selected some beau-tiful hair photographs from The Helen Op-penheim Hair Fashion Archives. Her collec-tion of works she produced for La Coupe are just so beautiful and should be seen again for inspiration.

I love this industry and the people too much to let this be bypassed into the history books.
