HOW I BECAME AN EPISCOPALIAN
By: Pamela Russo
I grew up in Atlanta as an active Southern
Baptist, but there were few Southern Baptist
Convention (SBC) churches in New Jersey
where I worked after graduate school -- no
surprise. Then I fell in love with a Catholic!
(Ray). I was not willing to become Catholic,
but my husband only felt comfortable in a
liturgical service, so the Episcopal Church
became our home. I had been pretty
disdainful of the Anglican/Episcopal church,
viewing it as having been formed on a king's
whim. However, there my new hubby felt comfortable. I also viewed
Episcopalians as too wishy-washy on issues. I remember being in an
Episcopal church singing a familiar hymn where the word "sin" (in the
Baptist version) had been replaced with something less accusatory! I
thought, "Oh, brother!"
Now I have come to respect the inclusiveness of the Episcopal church. As
the SBC looked for more reasons to exclude people, the Episcopal church
opened its doors and hearts to whomever had a thirst for God's word. So
while I started out as a Baptist in Episcopal clothing, I am now a true
Episcopalian! I am proud to have raised our children in such a loving,
Christian environment, focused on Christ's directives to "Love the Lord, your
God, with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind" and "Love your
neighbor as yourself.” I believe the Episcopal church does the best job of
promoting and focusing on those pivotal creeds. While other churches focus
on what sets them apart, I believe our denomination focuses on what brings
us together. I couldn't agree more with that approach. If you start from love,
everything else falls into place!
