She has taught physical education classes at The Hillside School for twenty- nine years. Her three main goals are to educate the students physically, socially, and intellectually. Why is it important to get children involved in physical education? Physical education allows children to try new sports, work on their skills and learn that physical activity is fun. Mrs. Jones feels that it is very important to get the students involved early on with physical education so they will establish a solid foundation. Children who are physically active are more likely to be physically active adults. And the more skills they have, the more likely they are to participate in a physical activity during their lifetime. This is extremely important with the current childhood obesity facts. According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. In 2013 more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. Physical education plays an important role in decreasing overweight and obesity rates. Besides physical activity what are some of the other benefits of Physical Education? Besides improved physical fitness children learn to progress their skills, self-control, stress reduction, strengthened peer relationships, social skills, improved self-confidence, and self-esteem.

“Someday the only thing that will matter will be your health.” That is just one of the many posters that hang in Mrs. Jones office. She has taught physical education classes at The Hillside School for twenty-nine years. Her three main goals are to educate the students physically, socially, and intellectually.

Why is it important to get children involved in physical education?Physical education allows children to try new sports, work on their skills and learn that physical activity is fun. What can be a typical physical education class?Students attend class twice weekly in which they learn a variety of skills needed to play volleyball/newcomb, basketball, tennis, soccer, and floor hockey. Because students learn at different levels, instruction is individualized to their needs. In addition to their regular classes, Mrs. Jones will provide additional help if necessary to students who may have weaknesses in some areas.

What are some of the exciting annual events you hold?Mrs. Jones organizes special events and clubs for all ages so that every student has a chance to experience a variety of activities. “The Flying Heels” walk club takes places everyday weather permitting at recess. Another great way to make friends is Tennis Club, which is an introduction to tennis. At the end of the year Mrs. Jones organizes Field Day which will be held on May 29th. This has always been a student favorite with alumni returning every year to help out. This year marked The Hillside School’s 15th year participating in the Jump for Heart and second year participating in Hoops for Heart. Jump/Hoops for Heart are community service learning programs partnered with the American Heart Association. The program teaches kids the importance of developing heart-healthy habits, that being physically active can be fun, by raising funds to support cardiovascular research and education helps save lives in their community and across the country.

Mrs. Jones believes that through these experiences our students learn social skills and gain self-confidence in addition to their physical development. Students will understand the importance of physical fitness at an early age. And as a result, they learn the skills they need to develop healthy habits that last a lifetime.
