VOLUNTEERS ASSEMBLED AT THE GOVERNMENT SCHOOL

On the Second day of our camp we started from college to J.V.Agraharam village with a

lot of excitement and zeal. Then we divided into different teams to do a household survey of

some remaining part of the village. We have also planned to educate the people about the

importance of cleanliness, swachhata and different ways of improving standards around them.

As a part of our plan we have started a door to door campaign to explain the importance

of cleanliness and to give some better ideas in terms by which they can have a hygienic

atmosphere surrounding them.

Simultaneously some of the chemical dept students have taken the water samples from

different areas and by evening all the volunteers have gathered at high school and we have

recalled the whole day activities by letting every team express their opinion and the work they

have done till evening so that everyone can get aware of it and then we have sung national

anthem and dispersed.

PLANTATION :

Every journey starts with one step and any change starts from one person. All the NSS

volunteers sought to bring change as much as possible and hence we planted trees to save the

environment and enhance the greenery in the village.

We did our part as we planted saplings and encouraged the villagers to do the same. It is

very important that we think about nature and climate. We preached the importance of trees to

the villagers and encouraged them to spread greenery in the village to keep it clean, healthy and

pollution free.

All the volunteers dug pits, placed saplings in the soil and watered them. We covered the

empty lands in the village with green saplings which would grow up and give oxygen and reduce

the pollution on the village. We filled the lands which we cleaned previously with saplings.

We convey our message of planting trees to save nature through our actions rather than words.

We started the cause of planting trees and spreading greenery from ourselves. We took the first

step so that we could inspire the villagers to do the same as we did, for their village and nature.

where there are lumps of non decomposable wastes.

We divided into teams and started the swachh bharat campaign. We cleaned the places which

were filled with dry waste, plastics, dry leaves, weeds , used cloth pieces etc.. We cleaned the

open places which are filled with thenon_decomposable wastes.

We created awareness among the villagers regarding the importance of clean

surroundings and the diseases caused due to the dumped wastes such as malaria, dengue and

other viral fevers.

INTERACTION WITH SCHOOL CHILDREN:

Today's children are tomorrow's future. They are the future youth which

will act as the building block of our nation.

To shape out their mindset and character we the nss volunteers took a stand to interact with the

children and gave them guidance for their future and the future of our nation.

Day – 04 29-01-2020 Wednesday

The events of the fourth day included painting of anganwadi, paper craft work for the

interior design of anganwadis and finally interaction with the school kids.

WALL BRUSHING (ANGANWADI-1):

The appearance of the anganwadi was noticeably changed with the

help of our NSS volunteers. Our volunteers made a clean wall white wash which made the walls

pleasant to look at. We came up with painting the walls with elegant colors which attracted the

spectators' vision towards them. The place was made tidy, pleasant and children friendly after

painting.

Anganwadi-1 before painting

This is the Anganwadi’s appearance before painting and we started painting the walls

with suitable colors.

We intended to change the view of the building so that the children would be more

inclined to stay and feel comfortable and happy with the environment around them. This would

help to improve their emotional state and acceptance to stay at the anganwadi away from their

parents during the whole day and uplift their energy.

So the volunteers started painting the walls outside and also the indoors of the anganwadi

building with pleasant colours.

This is a picture of volunteers painting the anganwadi. They worked with their interest and the

result was great as we got a good response from the villagers and especially the parents of the

children coming to the anganwadi. The inner walls were also painted with different colors which

were pleasant looking, mainly the outer walls are painted with white as it is less heat absorbent

so that the building remains cool during the day and the children could play and rest

comfortably. The anganwadi teachers expressed their happiness towards our work and

appreciated our efforts. We finally completed the painting of the first anganwadi by evening.

Paper can make wonders even in the absence of a pen. Our volunteers

decided to show those wonders to the kids who easily get attracted to visual aids. We made

different crafts like butterflies, fishes etc with papers to enhance kids interest and talents. We

made charts displaying alphabets and numbers, days of a week, map of the village to help the

children in learning with interest and zeal. This would help the kids with fewer cognizance’s as

the kids respond very well to the visual aid in teaching.

All the volunteers winded up the painting and crafts work and headed to the government school

to interact with the school children and create a friendly platform for the children to showcase

their talents and come forward and speak up.

Day – 05 30-01-2020 Thursday

SWACHH BHARAT RALLY:

The implementation of any action can be achieved through awareness among the citizens.

The village was facing many problems related to sanitation and cleanliness. This would affect

the health of the villagers and especially children. It was necessary to create awareness about

swachh bharat as it is important for the villagers to understand the various health issues and

vector borne diseases.

So to create awareness and spread conscience among the people, we conducted an

awareness rally on swachh bharat. All the NSS volunteers participated in the march to create

awareness on cleanliness, among local people and to incur them in their day to day life. The

mission included encouraging clean schools, surroundings and play areas. Pure drinking water

facilities, proper toilets, safe and clean food and personal hygiene were also imparted.

We paced in the village, holding placards, reciting slogans and rules about cleanliness.

We educated the villagers about the methods to keep houses and surroundings clean and how to

protect their families from diseases and illness. We persuaded the villagers to maintain a clean,

healthy and happy environment.

CREATING AWARENESS ABOUT VECTOR BORNE DISEASES

Even in today's community, various health issues are still prevalent. Many people are

suffering from various diseases and allergies. Most prevalent and harmful diseases are the vector

borne diseases.

Vectors are living organisms that can transmit infectious diseases between humans or

from animals to humans. Many of these vectors are bloodsucking insects, which ingest disease-

producing microorganisms during a blood meal from an infected human or animal and later

inject it into a new host during their subsequent blood meal. Most widespread diseases in this

village are caused by mosquitoes and others include ticks, flies, sand flies, fleas, bugs and some

freshwater snails.

In this village these diseases had more chances to spread as there were open drainage

systems and almost all the drains were clogged. The sanitation was not up to the mark and the

cleaning process was also not frequent and efficient. So it was very important to create

awareness among the villagers about the threats they were prone to.

Volunteers explaining to villager about diseases

We explained to them about the vector borne diseases and the necessary measures and

precautions to be taken.

Most of the diseases can be prevented by taking simple measures and following certain

hygiene rules. We told the villagers about the preventive measures and told them to keep their

houses clean.

We told them about the hazards that might be caused due to stagnation of water and

clogging of water and wastes, as they might cause the breeding of mosquitoes and other

vectors. We advised them to drink boiled water and to keep their houses clean. We told them to

take care of food and water especially during rainy seasons as they have a lot of chance to be

contaminated.

TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEY REPORT

Essentially, a topographical survey highlights any difference between the true levels and

gradients of the land at the project site, and those presupposed in preliminary designs. They are

used to identify and map the contours of the ground and existing features on the surface of the

earth or slightly above or below the earth’s surface i.e trees, buildings, streets, walkways,

manholes, utility poles, retaining walls, etc.

A Topographical Survey can help you visualise the land you intend to develop. Contours,

spot levels and feature lines accurately define the ground and boundaries so that you can design

with confidence.

BENEFITS OF TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEY:

The benefits of a topographic survey vary depending on the type of project. In general

through topographic surveys we :

1. Determine existing conditions and identify any issues with a site or natural area.

2. Show “setbacks” from boundaries or nature features for any new building or

development.

3. Provide engineers and architects with the necessary information to create correct and

suitable designs for the property's unique features.

4. Indicate how new features, such as grading, building structures, drainage ditches and

bridges, can be constructed (if possible).

TOPOGRAPHICAL MAPS:

Topographic maps are detailed, accurate graphic representations of features that appear

on the Earth's surface.

These features include:

1. Cultural: Roads, Buildings, Urban development, Railways, Airports, Names of places

and Geographic features, Administrative boundaries, State and International borders,

Reserves etc.

2. Hydrography: Lakes, Rivers, Streams, Swamps, Coastal flats.

3. Relief: Mountains, Valleys, Contours and Cliffs, Depressions etc.

4. Vegetation: Wooded and cleared areas, Vineyards and Orchards.

Advantages of topographical survey

There are many different types of services offered by seasoned civil engineering and

land surveying firms, and one of these is the topographical survey, a specialized area that is used

to determine both natural and manmade features of a land. Other types of surveys may help you

make maps where specific landmarks and stakes are depicted, but the topographical survey will

show contour lines and help you see the various changes, which have occurred in that land over a

given period of time. Professional land surveyors use modern technologies like EDM and GPS to

conduct this type of survey. Here are the five major benefits of a topographical survey:

1) It can provide the necessary data you will need about the land before making any changes to it

Page 62: SPECIAL CAMP (Youth for Rural development)

NSS UNIT 2-GVPCE(A) SPECIAL CAMP JAYANTHIVANI AGRAHAM

26-02-2020 TO 01-02-2020

2019-2020 NOT ME BUT YOU Page 62

– Whether you are building a completely new structure or making changes to an existing

property, a topographical survey can help you identify all the important features on, around, and

under the land.

2) It can tell you if there were any changes made to the land prior to being used – In case you

purchased land, a topographical can reveal any information that might be hidden from plain

sight, including the changes that have occurred in the area over a period of time.

Reason for topographical survey in village

To indicate how new features, such as grading , building structures, electrical poles,

drainage lines, ditches and bridges can be constructed. It also includes manmade features such

as street lights, water pumps , water taps, compost pits and dustbins.

VOLUNTEERS CONDUCTING TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEY

Approach to solution

1) Problems identified

The problem they identified is non cleaning of drainage regularly. The slope and

dimensions of the drainage with respect to the road are quite sufficient. The problem comes only

with lack of proper cleaning, drainage is being stagnated in some places. Another problem

identified is dustbins are not properly utilised instead they are growing plants in dustbins.

2) Usage Of data collected in topographical survey

a) With the help of data collected on the last day campers with the support of local youth and

panchayat staff made provision to clean the drainage .

b) The data collected in the survey made quick access to collect the water samples from the

village for testing in no time.

c) Villagers were given the profile of the drainage and water supply system with the data

collected from their village.

d) The villagers and panchayat staff were able to locate the points where high attention is to

be paid for the smooth draining of sewage.

3) Recommendations to the local governing body

1) Some parts of the village are well connected with drainage but not maintained properly. It

is recommended to maintain the drainage properly for effective usage and avoid

Stagnation of sewage.

2) It is recommended to maintain dustbins properly.

3) The streets must be maintained properly without throwing any litter.

Day – 06 31-01-2020 Friday

Explaining The Government schemes:

The main motive of this event is to bring awareness of some important schemes launched

by both states as well as the central government of India. There are many beneficial schemes but

people, especially those who are living in the back of beyond, are not aware of the schemes and

cannot avail of any benefits.

A government scheme is not successfull unless people are benefited.Violence against

women is increasing but the women's policy is still in pipeline. This is the opportunity that we

had grabbed to spread these schemes among the villagers.

The imperative schemes which may influence the lives of the people are: Aarogyasri,

Vahana Mitra,One step centre(Sakhi), RythuBharosa , FasalBima Yojana ,Pradhan Mantri Mudra

Yojana.

WALL PAINTINGS IN SCHOOL:

School is an important part of children’s life. They are the foundation of education. In

school they should need a happy and enjoyable environment. Pictures increase the creativity

skills in children. Children love paintings as these take them into a whole new world.

Our concept is to provide a learning environment to the kids through our paintings. These

paintings create an aura of happiness among the children. As a picture speaks 1000 words and it

retains in memory for a longer period of time this idea was brought into action through painting

the walls of the school. The village has two ANGANWADI SCHOOLS. The creative work of

ours truely brought smiles on those little faces. A favourite story character, whose portrait was

created using colors, may become more memorable – and in turn reading becomes a way to

discover other interesting things.

AWARENESS ON IMPORTANCE OF ORGAN DONATION:

Even with today's developed technology and equipped hospitals many lives are lost due

to the unavailability of organ donors. It is important that the citizens understand the necessity of

organ donation and take the decision to donate their organs with humanity, keeping aside all the

superstitions and beliefs.

We wanted to explain to people that it is possible to give life to others after them, with

organ donation.

So we went house to house and explained this selfless motive to donate life to others to

all the villagers. We divided into teams and covered the whole village campaigning for organ

donation.

All the volunteers explained that there is no more noble cause than to donate their organs

to others. We conveyed that with humanity, if they donate their organs many lives could be

saved, many people could be helped and many families could be aided.

Day – 07 01-02-2020 Saturday On this day we have reached JV Agraharam and all the volunteers have assembled at

Anganwadi 1.The day started with Vande Mataram.

PAINTING ON ANGANWADI-(2) WALLS :

Children learn easily and remember it for a long time when it is delivered in a pictorial

way. When we teach children from drawings or by enacting a play, they grasp the message easily

and never forget the lesson learnt.

So, our volunteers came up with the idea of painting the walls of the Anganwadi. These paintings

are knowledge oriented with addition of some fun.

We have done crafts to decorate the walls of the school. We have painted the walls with NSS

logo, animated vegetables, fruits and some classy cartoons.

The paintings were conveying the alphabets, days, numbers, colors fruits, etc in a very attractive

manner, which helped the kids to learn them easily and with interest.

RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE :

Children are very active, intelligent and interactive . We have conducted various competitions

like kabaddi which brought out their physical stamina and quiz to understand their mental

strength. They made an active participation and won exciting prizes.

SPORTS AND CULTURALS :

The enhancement of physical and mental development of children is certainly the most important

contribution of sports for children. All the stress can be relieved with the help of games for better

health conditioning. Our volunteers have conducted various outdoor games like Kho - Kho (for

girls) and kabaddi(for boys).

Sports not only build character but also, they reveal it. Play a sport, it will teach you how to win

honourably, lose gracefully, respect authority, work with others and managing time. To educate

people the importance of sports, our volunteers have played sports like Cricket. As actions speak

more than words, we inspired children to play sports involving physical activities
