BOEING RECOMMENDS THAT EACH OPERATOR EXAMINE THIS DOCUMENT IMMEDIATELY.
CONCURRENT REQUIREMENTS
None.
BACKGROUND
In prior MAX Display System (MDS) Blockpoint (BP) versions, the Angle of Attack Disagree (AOA DISAGREE)alert message on the Primary Flight Display (PFD) was dependent on the activation of the AOA Round Dialdisplay option. The MDS Display Processing Computer (DPC) Operational Program Software (OPS) BP 1.5.1includes a revision to the display of the AOA DISAGREE alert message on the PFD to be independent of theAOA Round Dial option. Also, unintentional intermix of prior MDS BP versions in each DPC would not set theDISPLAYS SOFTWARE CONFIG status message and illuminate the MAINT light to prevent dispatch. If thisservice bulletin is not done, the AOA DISAGREE alert message and the DISPLAYS SOFTWARE CONFIGstatus message will not function as intended.
The AOA DISAGREE alert indicates to the flight crew that the right and left AOA vane values disagree by morethan 10 degrees for more than 10 seconds. The AOA DISAGREE alert provides information to the flight crewon the AOA signals being received by the MDS in order to provide a source of supplemental information to assistin understanding the flight deck effects that may result from erroneous AOA information. Erroneous AOAinformation can influence airspeed and altitude indications. If there is an unreliable airspeed condition, the crewshould do the Airspeed Unreliable Non-Normal Checklist (NNC). If the flight crew refers to the AOA DISAGREENNC first, they are then redirected to the Airspeed Unreliable NNC in the Quick Reference Handbook (QRH).
A potential for a software configuration mismatch between the MDS DPCs on in-service aircraft has beenidentified. Should a software mismatch occur, the MDS Maintenance Awareness System (MAS) does not enablethe DISPLAY SOFTWARE CONFIG status message, associated MAINT light nor software configurationmaintenance messages. Also, the Airplane Configuration Data is not cleared after software installation.
– An unintentional MDS BP0/BP1 or BP0/BP1.5 DPC software intermix does not result in the DISPLAYSOFTWARE CONFIG status message. However, another status message DISPLAY CONFIG DATA isdisplayed and the MAINT light is illuminated preventing dispatch. This is due to differences in DPC cross-talkcommunications between BP0 and BP1/BP1.5.
– An unintentional MDS BP1/BP1.5 DPC software intermix does not result in the DISPLAY SOFTWARECONFIG status message, and no other messages occur that trigger the MAINT light.

The changes in MDS DPC OPS BP 1.5.1 align the operation of the AOA DISAGREE alert to be consistent with737NG functionality. Additionally, the DISPLAYS SOFTWARE CONFIG status message will be set and preventdispatch if there is an unintentional software intermix with BP 1.5.1. MDS DPC OPS BP 1.5.1 is the recommendedconfiguration of the MDS DPC OPS software.

The AOA DISAGREE alert indicates to the flight crew that the right and left AOA vane values disagreeby more than 10 degrees for more than 10 seconds. Erroneous AOA information can influence airspeed and altitude indications. If thereis an unreliable airspeed condition, the crew should do the Airspeed Unreliable Non-Normal Checklist(NNC). If the flight crew refers to the AOA DISAGREE NNC first, they are then redirected to the AirspeedUnreliable NNC in the Quick Reference Handbook (QRH).
A potential for a software configuration mismatch between the MDS DPCs on in-service aircraft hasbeen identified. Should a software mismatch occur, the MDS Maintenance Awareness System (MAS)does not enable the DISPLAY SOFTWARE CONFIG status message, associated MAINT light norsoftware configuration maintenance messages. Also, the Airplane Configuration Data is not clearedafter software installation.
– An unintentional MDS BP0/BP1 or BP0/BP1.5 DPC software intermix does not result in the DISPLAYSOFTWARE CONFIG status message. However, another status message DISPLAY CONFIGDATA is displayed and the MAINT light is illuminated preventing dispatch. This is due to differencesin DPC cross-talk communications between BP0 and BP1/BP1.5.
– An unintentional MDS BP1/BP1.5 DPC software intermix does not result in the DISPLAYSOFTWARE CONFIG status message, and no other messages occur that trigger the MAINT light.
The changes in MDS DPC OPS BP 1.5.1 align the operation of the AOA DISAGREE alert to beconsistent with 737NG functionality. Additionally, the DISPLAYS SOFTWARE CONFIG status messagewill be set and prevent dispatch if there is an unintentional software intermix with BP 1.5.1. MDS DPCOPS BP 1.5.1 is the recommended configuration of the MDS DPC OPS software.
