Compact Radius Design. The 308C CRis a compact radius version of the 307C.It is designed to work in a 2850 mm(9 ft 8 in) wide area.

4M40-E1 Engine. The Mitsubishi 4M40-E1engine was developed specifically forconstruction equipment. It featuresa long-stroke piston movement forhigh torque at medium to low speeds,excellent fuel efficiency and lowsound levels and vibration.

Low Fuel Consumption. The engine offerslow fuel consumption, improved thermalefficiency and reduced resistance betweenpistons and liners.

Cylinder Block and Head. The cylinderblock is made of cast iron for improvedwear resistance. The upper part is laser-hardened to reduce oil consumption,increase wear resistance and minimizepiston ring scuffing. Aluminum alloycylinder heads incorporate waterdirectors to ensure efficient cooling.

Pistons and Rings. Heat-resistantaluminum cast alloy pistons featureclearance control struts. A shortcompression height results in highcombustion efficiency and reducedweight. The piston ring set consistsof three rings, treated for maximumwear resistance.

Crankshaft and Connecting Rod.The surface of the crankshaft journalsand pins are induction-hardened toensure high reliability. The forgedconnecting rods are made of a high-tensile strength steel alloy.

Cooling System. A large-diameter fanand full-length, water-cooled cylinders,combined with excellent thermalefficiency, help prevent overheating.The result is longer engine life and theability to operate at high temperaturesand under heavy loads. A mixed flowfan design provides high coolingefficiency. The core radiator is equippedwith waved fins to prevent clogging.

Lubrication System. The system utilizesan external gear-type, high-efficiency oilpump. The large oil filter is composedof a main filter and a bypass filter,designed for high performance.

Starting System. The standard 308C CRhas a 3.2 kW capacity starting motor,mounted at the right of the engine,and two Cat 100-AH capacity batteries.In this configuration, the machine can bestarted at -32ºC (-25ºF) with glow plugs.

Precise Control. Hydraulics deliversmooth changes in speed and outstandingoverall control.

Pilot System. Increased pilot hydraulicpressure provides better control to thefront linkage, swing and travel operations.

Component Layout. The 308C CRhydraulic system was designed to providea high level of efficiency. With all majorcomponents located close together,shorter tubes and lines are needed,resulting in less friction loss in thelines and reduced pressure drops.

Hydraulic Cross-Sensing System.The system utilizes each of the mainhydraulic pumps to 100 percent of enginepower under all operating conditions,resulting in faster implement speedsand pivot turns.

Flow Control System. Pump flowdecreases when controls are in neutralfor reduced fuel consumption andsound levels.

Stick Regeneration Circuit. Saves energywhile the stick is in use, providing shortercycle times and lower operating costs.

Boom Drift Reducing Valve. This valvereduces the natural drift of the boom,so lifted material will remain suspendedfor long periods with virtually no drift.

Auxiliary Hydraulic Valve. The auxiliaryhydraulic valve is standard on the308C CR for use with optionalhydraulic circuits.

Stackable Valves. One stackable valvecan be used in combination with themain control valve, allowing additionaltools to be added.

Auxiliary Hydraulic Arrangements. Formaximum flexibility, three arrangementsare available on the 308C CR: singlefunction for a dedicated hammer, doublefunction for a thumb or a combinedfunction circuit.

Hydraulic Cylinder Snubbers. Snubbersare located at the rod-end of the boomcylinders and both ends of the stickcylinders to cushion shocks whilereducing sound levels and extendingcylinder life.

Front Linkage Attachments. Allows theuse of one boom, two sticks and fourbuckets. Using these combinationsmakes the excavator productive in awide range of applications.

One-Piece Boom. The one-piece boomfeatures a fabricated box-section design.Robotic welding and high-tensilestrength steel on upper, lower andside plates provide high durabilityand consistency.

Sticks. Two stick attachments areavailable: a long stick to maximizereach or a medium stick for the mostversatile front linkage. Both sticks usea box-section design made of hightensile-strength steel and a buffer plate.

Linkage Bearings. A self-lubricated,sintered bearing greatly extends thegreasing interval on front linkage pinsby reducing pin friction. Greasingintervals on the bucket swing pinconnection are also extended usinga mesh bearing design.

Linkage Pins. Linkage pins are used withhigh-stress parts such as at the boomfoot and boom cylinders. They featurea thick chrome finish to maximizedurability. The 308C CR pin diametersare the same as on the 307C, except forboom cylinder-frame pin size.

Buckets. High-tensile-strength steel isused in high-stress areas for excellentwear and shock resistance. The sideplates are tapered to prevent contact ofthe bucket sidewalls during trenchingoperations. All four bucket sizes havea general-purpose design and share acommon side profile.

Bucket-Flop Adjustment Mechanism.Allows the operator or service personto reduce the side play at the bucket tostick-nose connection. This attachmentis only available when Cat buckets areordered.

Undercarriage Design. The 308C CRuses a standard undercarriage with thesame basic design as the 307C, ensuringhigh reliability.

Grease-Lubricated Track. Grease-lubricated seals protect the track linkand provide longer wear life by helpingto keep dirt and debris from enteringthe pin and bushing joint.

Roller Lubrication. All rollers, sprocketsand idler joints are closed with floatingseals. Lubricating oil from the sealsprevents water and dirt from entering.The seals also make lubricationmaintenance-free.

Master Pin. The standard master pin isthe split-pin type, which makes trackattachment and removal easier.

Carbody and Track Roller Frame.X-shaped, box-section carbody provideshigh rigidity and excellent resistanceto torsional bending. The track frame ismade from a press-formed pentagonalsection for maximum strength and longservice life. The carbody and track rollerframes use robotic welding to ensurecontinuous, high-quality welds. Longwelds contribute to smoother transitionof loads and increased durability.

Travel Motors. Automatic speed selectionenables the machine to automaticallyshift up and down from high and lowspeeds in a smooth, controlled manner.An “anti-hunt” feature eliminates thehunting often associated with autoshifting when operating near theshift point.

Travel Motor Routing. The travel motorsare routed along the rear of the carbody,protecting the lines from damage.

Travel Brake Valves. An improvedcounterbalance valve eliminates suddenstarts and stops during travel. A cross-over relief valve helps reduce shocksduring acceleration and deceleration anddecreases wear on the travel motors.

Idler Guard. An idler guard is integralto the track roller frame. This standardguard helps maintain track alignmentwhile traveling or working on slopes.

Triple Grouser Shoes with Rubber Pads.The 308C CR standard shoe has fourextra holes for installation of steel-backed rubber street pads. Optionalrubber pads are attached to the trackshoes, eliminating potential damage topaved road surfaces. (Pads are installedby your local Caterpillar® dealer or canbe purchased through the dealer forlater installation.)

Segment-type Rubber Track. Optionalsegment-type rubber track preventsdamage to concrete and other roadsurfaces, especially in urban areas.

Blades. Two blade widths are availableas attachments. The bolt-on cuttingedge consists of three pieces, which canbe reused by turning them upside down.Replaceable bolt-on edges protect theblade from damage and wear. Meshbearings in the pin joints of the bladecylinder extend the greasing interval.

Cab Design. An enlarged cab with curvedstyling gives the operator a comfortable,spacious working environment andimproved visibility.

Seat. The low-back seat slides forwardand backward independent of theconsoles, so it can be adjusted tothe operator’s comfort level.

Sliding Door. The cab door slidesalongside the cab and takes less spaceto open and close than a hinged door.This unique design allows the operatorto easily get in and out of the cab whenworking against walls on job sites, evenwhen attachments are added.

Consoles. Redesigned consoles feature asimple, functional design. Both consoleshave attached adjustable armrests andslide forward and backward.

Monitor. The conveniently locatedcompact monitor displays instrumentpanel gauges and indicators in an easy-to-read and understand format.

Cab Mounts. The cab shell is attachedto the frame with viscous rubber cabmounts, which dampen vibrations andsound levels while enhancing operatorcomfort.

Travel Control Levers. The two travelcontrol levers have a reverse-L shape,making them easier to operate. Leverstroke and force have been adjustedto improve fine control and to preventjolting during machine impact.

Hydraulic Activation Control Lever.For added safety, this lever must be inthe locked position before the operatorcan leave the cab. This feature preventsthe machine from operating without theoperator in the cab.

Climate Control. Fully automatic climatecontrol adjusts temperature and flow.

Windows. Window glass is attacheddirectly to the window frame withadhesive to improve visibility. To protectthe operator from falling objects, theupper front window is made of laminatedglass. An enlarged skylight with sunshadeimproves overhead visibility.

Windshield. The front windshield canbe opened and closed using a one-touchaction release system and autolocksystem.

Extended Service Intervals. Extendedservice and maintenance intervalsreduce service time and machineavailability. Use of oil-free bearingextends front linkage greasing intervalto 1,000 hours, except in bucket area.

Ground-Level Maintenance. For operatorconvenience, all daily maintenanceareas can be easily reached fromground level.

Fan Guard. Engine radiator fan iscompletely enclosed by fine wiremesh, reducing the risk of injury.

DT Electrical Connectors. Connectorsare water- and vibration-resistant,improving electrical system reliability.

Radiator and Pump Compartment.Opening the engine hood allows easyaccess to the engine radiator and the oilcooler. A reserve tank and drain cockare attached to the radiator to simplifymaintenance.

Air Filter. Cat radial seal providessuperior cleaning efficiency.

Engine Inspection. The engine can beaccessed from the upper structure orfrom under the machine. The enginehood incorporates a gas cylinder-assistmechanism, making the hood easy toopen. A steel wall separates the engineand pump compartments, preventinghydraulic oil from spraying on theengine in the event of a hydraulicline failure.

Engine Maintenance. To make dailyservicing easier, the oil level gauge, oilfilter, fuel filter and priming pump aregrouped on the left side of the engine.

Fuel Tank. A drain cock is installed atthe bottom of the tank, making it easierto remove water and sediment duringmaintenance.

Fuel-Water Separator. The waterseparator has a primary fuel filter elementand is located in the radiator compartmentfor easy access from the ground.

Storage Box. The storage box is locatedat the right front of the upper structureand can be locked. Tools and other repairequipment can be stored in this space.
