Speaking Practice Guide
Session 2 Level 102
General guidelines for lesson At the start of the lesson explain to the class that in this speaking session they will receive practice in asking and answering the sorts of questions they may be asked in part 1 of the final speaking exam. Tell them that they will also receive a grade for their completion of the speaking tasks (not the quality of their performance but how hard they worked and whether they did the work). Instructors may choose to show their students the grading rubric to be used (see the final page of this document).
Scoring Please use the rubric below for determining the mark for your students’ formative speaking assessment, reflecting their attendance and task completion.

Overview
This activity prepares students for the Section 2 task on the end of module speaking exam. Please
note that this activity is more extensive than the activity on the final exam and some vocabulary
words in this activity are not from the textbook. On the final exam, most vocabulary will be
restricted to the textbook. It is not necessary to pre-teach most of the vocabulary words in this
activity and it is not important for students to understand every word on every menu.
Preparation:
1. Copy 8 of the waiter roleplay sheets.
2. Copy enough customer sheets that all the other students in your class have one (for example, if
your class has 30 students, you would copy 8 waiter sheets and 22 customer sheets).
3. Make 3 copies of the menu sheets and cut them up.
4. Immediately before this lesson, arrange the classroom seating into 8 distinct groupings of 4 chairs.

Suggested Procedure in Class: Tell the class they are going to practice ordering food in a restaurant. Most of the class will be
customers, but 8 students will be waiters. There are 8 restaurants. Customers will move from
restaurant to restaurant. At each restaurant they will be: Greeted by a waiter and given menus. Given a minute or so to look over the menu. Asked by the waiter what they want to order. Asked how their food was and if they want dessert. When customers finish at one restaurant, they move to the next one (you as the teacher may
want to tell students to move to new restaurants every 4-5 minutes if things seem to be
dragging or taking too long). If students don’t get to all 8 restaurants in the hour, it is OK.
1. Choose your 8 waiters (the strongest students in your class are recommended for this role). 2. Distribute the waiter sheets to the waiters and the customer sheets to the rest of the class. Do
not start the activity yet. 3. Model the activity by pretending to be a waiter and interacting with one of the students who has a
customer sheet. Use the sample dialog in the left column of the waiter and customer sheets. 4. In pairs, encourage students to practice the dialog with one student pretending to be a waiter
and one student pretending to be a customer—the student’s actual roles don’t matter here. This is just practice for the activity.
5. After students are comfortable with the dialogs, give menus to the waiters. Each waiter should
have 3 menus and all of that waiter’s menus should be the same. Assign one waiter to each
grouping of 4 chairs. 6. Tell the rest of the students to get up and in pairs (or groups of 3 if the class has more than 24
students) go to a restaurant. Waiter and customer follow the procedure outlined in #1 above.
