PICNIC BUDDIES . . . . . By Jake Barrett

A classic tradition of Wichita Collegiate that is anticipated by everyone, well, at least the little kids, is picnic day. Homecoming is that night and there is as little school as you can get. Seniors always win the games in the mornings, and then you pick up a little buddy for the afternoon.Sometimes you get lucky with your buddy and get a really cool little kid who does anything and everything you want them to do, no questions asked, and have a great time doing it. The soda pop ring toss is always the best game, and if your buddy is willing to sit through it, you get a free two liter. There’s also the inflatable where theycan burn off all their extra energy. The lines are always ridiculously long on these two things, so you need to either have a patient buddy or be very good at cutting. On the other hand, you can sometimes get that buddy that is very shy and quiet. This isn’t particularly bad, but it makes for a less enjoyable picnic day experience for you. You basically have to lead them around to do the activities and stand awkwardly in silence during the lines. One course of action is to buddy up with one of your friends and hang out with them so at least you have somebody to talk to.All in all, picnic day should be at least somewhat enjoyable and fun for everyone. Though you shouldn’t ditch your buddies, you need to at least let them have a good time. This year was extra special too, with Lauren Alaina performing at the end of the day. TheCW Crew was also there to capture some of the homecoming action on camera. Check out their show this weekend to see if they shot any of you. Lastly, if you didn’t have a good buddy this year, there’s always next year. (and if you did have a good buddy, lucky you, and knock on wood that you get another one.)

Edgar Corrigan & The Young

Republicans

Two weeks ago, in this publication, a particularly negative article was published promoting the newly founded Young Democrats Club. The author of thearticle makes it a point to show the comparison between the Young Democrats and the traditional Young Republicans club. The article also goes on to harshlycriticize the “right leaning” students at our school, and accuses the members of Collegiate’s Young Republicans club of “occasionally misguiding fellow classmates.”The article continues to even accuse the members of the Young Republicans Club of “brainwashing incoming freshman.”As a member of Wichita Collegiate’s Young Republicans Club, I’m proud of the efforts the Young Democrats club. There are two sides to every issue and it’simportant that we be aware of both. Encouraging young members of our society to participate in political thought is vastly important. However, the two separate groups shouldn’t involve themselves in petty stereotypical name calling, but rather in an intellectual debate. Students shouldnot only be permitted to voice their political opinions, but should be encouraged to. It is important to note that when a student voices his or hers political opinionit shouldn’t be lazily condemned as “brainwashing”, but instead as intellectualexpression. The new “hope” at Collegiate isn’t the fact that the Young Democrats Club was created, but rather the fact that students are taking a stance. Taking a political stance, despite your personal beliefs, isn’t an unconscious effort. On the contrary it is an effort that defines who you are as a person. Anybody that engages in politicalthought shouldn’t be deemed as “ignorant”, but instead

should be praised for being interested. As the year

progresses I look forward to seeing the interactions

between the two groups.

TRACE & INDIA VICTORIOUS, JOEY APPROVES!

Getting to know the Girl’s Golf Team.By James Engel.

Tara Kneller, the lone senior… and player… on the girl’s golf team, has been playing golf now for approximately a year and a half. She decided she would join the golf team because she has always wanted to play; knowing it would be a lifetime sport that she would really enjoy. Tara looks forward to playing a few holes every day (that’s dedication) with Mr. Hapward at her favorite golf course, Crestview Country Club. “I enjoy Crestview because it is in much better shape and it’s much prettier than the other courses I play,” Tara explains. Tara tried to recruit a few fellow seniors- Sophie Rush and Paige Boleski- to join her one women wolf pack but they both quit after one day. Tara decided school was more important than golf (what a stupid thing to believe) and chose to skip league so she would not miss class. She plans on playing regionals and hopes to qualify to play at state. “It will be more difficult to advance to state this year now that we are 4A,” Tara comments. “For all of you who are consideringplaying golf, I would highly recommend giving it a shot. The hardest part is getting started, but trust me, you will come to enjoy the game and its challenges.”

PAPER TWEET: Featuring Coach Fiegel. By Jake Barrett Q: If you had to describe this

year’s homecoming in one word, what would it be?

Missing Magic

By: Kara Maloney and Christy Peterson

This year during Picnic Day, many people were very sad to hear that there would be no magician this year. Even though many may agree with the fact that he always presented the same show, everyone missed watching him pull rabbits out of hats and slice a box (with a person in it) into pieces. The magician has been a part of Picnic Day for a very long time, and it was hard for everyone to miss such a spectacular performance.Another missing event was the cakewalk. Many of the children loved walkingaround in circles hoping to get sweets. Many people used to wait till the end of the day and go and get them without even winning. That’s what we missed, free food.Even without these activities, Picnic day was still a success. From decoratingpumpkins, to tug-of-war, to moon bounces, to limbo, every student at Collegiate enjoyed themselves during this amazing Spartan tradition.

Class FloatsBy Diana Kim and Riley Kemmer

This year we were presented with a very

diverse quality of floats, ranging from amazing to utterly disgusting. Winning it all this year was the sophomore class whose float looked more store-bought than actually hand-crafted. Aided by some construction company, this year’s sophomores

ran away with the best float and thus finishing second overall for homecoming week. This years’ runner-up was the senior class. Although finishing first overall in homecoming week, their float lacked the store-bought, professionally built

look that the sophomores had perfected so well. The seniors definitely had the best hand-crafted, creative float this year, but sadly money outdoes hard work. Finishing in third was this years’ freshmen whose float looked like it was built by…

well, freshmen. In the years ahead the freshmen can only go up in terms of float building. This being said, no one will be able to rival this years’ junior class float which set a record for the most creative, well-built float, in recent history. When

asked about the float, junior class treasurer, Brianna Lowden, said “I was really happy with how the float turned out this year, we had lots of fun building it and I think it turned out great.”

Wall Street Protests Change Direction

By Elly Vosburgh.

Anti-corruption protests began about four weeks ago in New York on Wall Street and have spread to over one thousand cities. Demonstrators are protesting against corporatism, unemployment, poverty, social inequality, corrupt Wall Street business practices and the close connections between the government, Wall Street and the Federal Reserve. Protesters blame the current economic crisis on Wall Street practices and corporate influence on White House policies. Protesters are referring to themselves as “the 99 percent”, to call attention to the fact that they are not a part of the one percent that is in possession of the nation’s wealth. The protests began as a grassroots uprising of younger people protesting despite the best efforts of police and other authorities to silence them. As the protest grew larger and continued longer than was expected, political organizations tried to use the protest to their advantage and change the focus of the movement to fit their own agenda. As the protest continues, more and more groups are forcing theirway into the movement, such as United Auto Workers Union, a political action group called moveon.org (one of many committees funded by billionaire George Soros)and the National Education Association. The emergence of such funded groups among the original protesters has directed the movement away from being a protest against the status quo of corruption and greed on Wall Street and in the Federal Reserve. Lost in the new wave of funded committees is the intent of the initial protesters: to bring back true capitalism. Will the original protesters be heard or will they be silenced by government, money and politics?

The Golden AppleBy Wynn Hukle

One of the greatest minds of our time passed away on October 5, 2011. As the CEO, co-founder, and chairman of Apple Incorporated, Steve Jobs helped revolutionize modern technology arguably more than any other individual to date. With his creative perspective and innovative designs, he managed to touch the lives of hundreds of millions of people all around the world. Most know him simply as that guy who was in charge of Apple. But what many do not know is that Jobs was also the co-founder and chairman of Pixar Animation Studios. John Lasseter, CCO of Pixar, and Ed Catmull, president of Pixar Animation Studios wrote in regards to Jobs “…He saw the potential of what Pixar could be before the rest of us, and beyond what anyone ever imagined. Steve took a chance on us and believed in our crazy dream of making computer animated films; the one thing he always said was simply ‘make it great.’ “ That is exactly what Jobs did. Every film ever produced by Pixar has made the list of “fifty highest grossing animated films of all time.” In addition, Up, Finding Nemo, and Toy Story 3 all making the cut for “fifty highest grossing films of all time.” Jobs was always on the cutting-edge of developing the best of the best, and Pixar was no exception, having been sold to Disney for 7.4 billion dollars. Young jobs founded Apple along with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne in 1976. Strangely enough, Jobs actually resigned from Apple in 1985 Jobs said about leaving Apple, "The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.” In 1996, Apple bought NeXT, the company Jobs had independently founded, reuniting him with the company that he had started. Just years later, Jobs along with the other creative minds at Apple would bring about the Macbook, iTunes, iPods, iPhone, the iPad and many other electronic devices that changed the face of the world. Other than Siddhartha Gautama, Jobs was arguably the most influential Buddhist the world has ever seen. However, instead of teaching religion, he taught the world to appreciate the electronics that offer exceptional functionality, imagination, and groundbreaking technological capacity. And to those of us who are yet decided as to what it is we are destined to do, Jobs advice: “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”
