    Spartan Fundamental Drill Book Introduction

Having a system of play based upon the fundamental skills of the gameallows for consistency and stability from season to season. While your teams level oftalent may change from season to season, a solid foundation of the fundamentalshelps to make only small adjustments to your specific offenses and defensesnecessary.

When teaching your system of play, it is vital that the fundamentals becomesecond nature to your players. According to Coach Wooden, a player must be able toproperly and quickly execute the fundamentals under the pressure of game

conditions for the welfare of the team. We strongly believe the axiom: You revert toyour strongest habits in time of duress. Therefore, the drills you choose must begame like and done at a rapid pace. We believe that 80 percent of the drills usedcould be eliminated. Drills should not be done for the sake of the drill. Drills shouldfit your system and replicate game situations and teach the skills and movementsyou specifically want in games.

Besides having game like drills, you should also use drills that have a primaryand secondary emphasis. We all have limited practice time so it is a good idea to usedrills which can teach as much of your system as efficiently as possible. As you readthis booklet, look for the drills you can adapt to your system. When studying thegame of basketball, it is important to get all the good ideas. You cant use all thegood ideas. Take and adapt the ideas that fit your system.

    Practice Format & Planning

Spartan Practice Philosophy:This part of the Fundamental Drill Book is to give you a picture of each part of a

Spartan Basketball practice. The biggest thing to remember in becoming a great teacher isthat you can create all the drills you want but it is what you want to emphasize in each drill, that really matters. Be a skill coach not a drill coach! Do one drill with 15 repetitions insteadof doing 15 drills with one repetition. We all have different ways to approach our practices, but it is the simple things that we emphasize to do well each day that matters. Use repetitionin practice to create a foundation of skills that can be executed confidently at game speed. These daily skills can make your team successful.

*Some important aspects you need to be well drilled in as a coach are:1. Use your time and all players wisely; nobody should be standing at any time. Utilize yourtime so all players are getting as many quality repetitions as possible.2. Use your facilities. If you do not have enough hoops to do things during individualaspects of practice, make sure you have your groups set up and they are all active working ondifferent parts of their game.3. Communication: Echo calls and continuous talking throughout drills are very important. They help you move quickly and efficiently from drill to drill. Echo calls are when one playeris given an order. He or she quickly and loudly yells out the instructions and as soon assomebody else hears it everybody repeats it until the next drill is going. Both echo calls andcontinuous talking throughout drill work are important in building a team.

5 Laws of Learning1. Readiness to learn

(When the student is ready, the teacher will appear)

    2. Proper Demonstration of the skill3. Imitation of the demonstration of the skill

    4. Correction of the imitation of the skill5. Proper and quick repetition of the skill

TEAM FUNDAMENTALS1 Hand CatchPlayers stand 15 feet apart and pass the ball with 1 hand above their shoulder.

*Teaching Points:1. Use each hand when doing this drill.2. Communicate with your partner.3. Catch the ball with your hands, eyes, and feet.

    TENNIS BALL SERIESDribble and Juggle

Each player has a ball and a tennis ball. The player dribbles the basketball with his weak

hand and juggles the tennis ball with his strong hand. Our players are able to toss the ballover the rafters of our arena. They will use various forms of the dribble after releasing theball before making the catch on its descent. One of the various tricks is to try and catch theball after it hits the floor and bounces up.

    *Teaching Points:

    1. Get low and wide. Pound the dribble hard.2. Keep your dribble if you lose control of the tennis ball. Never give up your

    dribble.

    3. This drill is great in teaching the player not to watch the ball when dribbling. We love this drill for our summer basketball campers and our players do it on their own in

    each practice.

Dribble and TossPlayers partner up and talk to each other while dribbling with the weak hand and underhandtoss the ball with the strong hand. There are two balls dribbling and two tennis balls going

    back and forth between players.

    1. We want the players to move in a random fashion while tossing.2. Keep your dribble during any miscue handling the tennis ball.

Dribble and ThrowPlayers throw the ball overhand to each other while moving in random fashion. They will

want to move further away from each other.

    1. Continue stressing the communication of player names.2. Encourage snappy, crisp throws.

    3. Keep your dribble alive on miscues.

Bad Pass ReactionTwo players with one basketball make sharp, crisp bad passes to each other. Another way to

use this is to have a coach throw softball style bullet passes to the players. This really teststhe hands.

    *Teaching Points:

    1. Hands ready and knees bent. Sit into your game in a basketball position.2. Try to get behind all the passes. You catch the ball with your feet.3. Watch every catch into your hands. You catch the ball with your eyes.4. Block the ball with one hand and tuck it to your chin with the other. You catch

the ball with your hands. You catch the ball with your feet, your eyes, and your hands.

2 BALL DRIBBLINGEach player has two basketballs and is on the baseline facing the playing floor. The players

do five stationary dribbles.1. Low rhythm (both very low)2. Low non-rhythm (both very low)3. High rhythm (both very high)4. High non-rhythm (both very high)5. High-low (one very high-one very low)

After doing the dribble in a stationary position, they move out very slowly to the half line, using all five dribbles. When they reach the half line, they come back to the baseline using

dribble changes of hand, never doing any of the changes twice.

    1. Be in a basketball position sitting into your game.2. Eyes on the far net for vision to scan the floor.3. Start slow, get a rhythm and go fast enough to make a mistake. (Overload your

hands)4. Be ball quick, pound the dribble.

Windshield WipersDribble both balls across your body in unison. Go as far to each side as possible. A

variation of this drill is to use one ball and go as far out as possible.Together

Bring the balls together and if possible have them touch each other. Keep the balls as low tothe floor as possible.

***A variation of this drill is to cross the dribbles in front of one another alternating rightover left and then left over right.

Rhythm Push-Pull on Sides of BodyWork both arms together as you do push-pull dribbles with two basketballs.

Alternate Push-Pull on Sides of the BodyThis is tough. Alternate arms and do the push-pull dribble with two basketballs.

Pullback Crossover ProgressionStart in a stationary position.

    A. Begin with the push-pull dribble on your right side until you feel the rhythm.B. Crossover the ball to the left side and push-pull until you feel the rhythm.C. Push-pull once and crossover low and to the floor and quickly to the other side.

You can vary the number of push-pulls before crossing over.

    D. Do the same with a baby step.E. Do the same with a lunge step, pushing the defense back.F. Take at least two dribbles forward, push-stepping forward and two dribbles back,

push-stepping back. Cross it over and repeat sequence with the other hand.**Point your lead foot in the direction you are going.

    G. Lunge step as in E.H. Baby step as in D.I. Push-pull and cross over stationary as in C.J. Work back down to the start as in B and A.

    *Teaching Points:

    1. Basketball position, low and wide sitting into your game.2. Start slow, get a rhythm, go fast enough to make a mistake.3. Eyes on the net if full court and rim if half court.4. Point the lead foot going forward and back.5. You can crossover in front or between your legs.

Hop Step Series:Players line up at the elbows. Execute a direct drive with a hopstep finish. Execute acrossover drive with a Hop Step finish. Players can move back to the 3 point arc as they getmore comfortable with this move.

*Teaching Points:1. Slice, Dribble, Cup, Loop, Hop, Land2. Hop Step, Hop Skip, Hop Stag4. Break it down, then go in one continuous motion.

2 Ball Buster (25:54 of Purdue Edits)Player starts on the right block with the ball. The other ball should be placed on the left

block. Transfer the ball over your head with your top foot as your pivot foot. Step withyour lead foot (closest to the baseline) and bounce the ball at the same time as your foot hitsthe floor. Hop and land on 2 feet when you finish. Repeat the process for a predeterminednumber of shots. Always rebound your shot and place the ball on the block.

*Teaching Points:1. Make sure you get your feet up under you.2. Explode up with power each time.3. Utilize each hand.4. Feet perpendicular to the baseline.

Dribble SeriesPlayers start behind the half court line, dribbling full speed at a chair that has been placedbetween half court and arc and another chair at the lane line extended above the 3 pt arc.Player will use a prescribed move at each of these chairs and go in for a full speed lay upfinish. After making the lay up, the offensive player spins the ball out to simulate an outletpass and catches the ball with his back to the sideline. The player must then execute theprescribed move two times before reaching half court where he finishes the drill with a jumpstop.

*Teaching Points:1. Can use 2 chairs on each end for maximum participation.2. Can finish with lay up on one end and jump shot on the other.3. Utilize coaches/managers to make it tough to finish at the rim.4. Get to the rim in 1 dribble after making the prescribed move.

1 on 1 Square up StrongOffense spins the ball to themselves outside the arc. Defense pressures the ball for 15seconds. Switch offense and defense.*Teaching Points

    1. Offense: catch the ball on 2 feet, square up strong by getting 10 toes to the rim2. Defense: Force the offense to play with their back to the basket

    2 on 1 Keep Away

2 offense players 10-15 ft away from each other. 1 defensive player pressures the ball. Onpass defensive player will replace passer and passer will closeout the player he just passed to.Repeat until everyone has closed out twice.*Teaching Points

    1. Offense: fake a pass to make a pass2. Offense: Play with 10 toes towards rim (target)3. Defense: Force offense to play with back to basket (target)4. Defense: Active hand pressure

    TRANSITION DRILLS

Duke 2 on 0 TransitionThere is one line of players in the lane and another line of players at the outlet. Players inthe lane have a basketball. Drill is started by player with the ball tossing the ball on thebackboard and getting the rebound, and making an outlet pass to his teammate. Thereceiver of the outlet pushes the ball to the free throw line on the opposite end of the floor. The player who made the outlet pass runs the lane to the opposite end of the floor andreceives a pass from his teammate. Different moves can now be executed:Lay up, pull up jumper off the glass, shot fake right, shot fake left, 3pt

    *Teaching Points:

    1. Rebounder must chin the ball and make a

turn in the air.2. Outlet man calls for the ball and receives the outlet with his back to the sideline.3. Run the lane wide and communicate which lane you are in.4. Proper footwork from the passer and the receiver.

Laker3 lines with 1 ball in the middle. Must make 10 lay ups without the ball hitting the floor. 1in middle 2 in right lane and 3 in left lane. 1 offensive rebound, outlet to 2, 2 back to 1, 1 to3 for the layup. 1 goes wide around a cone on the other end (free throw line extendedoutside of the arc). 2 gets rebound, 2 passes to 3, 3 to 2, 2 to 1 for lay up. 11 AttackDefender is in the center jump circle and cannot retreat until the ball gets to the center jump

circle. The offense starts at the top of the key and sprints to the center circle where hereceives a pass from the coach (a couple of steps before he gets to the circle). The offensiveplayer makes a move on the defender and goes in straight line to the basket. The offenseCANNOT turn his back on the defender. There is another defender who started in thepaint and is sprinting trying to block the shot of the offensive player. The 2 defenders now convert to offense. The trail defender takes the ball out of bounds. The on the ball defender is now trying to get open versus pressure. The offensive player isnow on defense and applying pressure to the inbounds pass. They play 2on1 to the otherend of the floor.

If there is a missed lay up, they want a tip finish. (we want a 2 hand finish!)

2on1 we want air passes.Dont get it blocked. Shoot it off the glass. Each team gets 1 point for each lay up. Play to 6.

22 AttackDrill Starts same as 11 drill except now you have 2 offensive players. On pass from coach tostart drill, the offense speed dribbles to half court and then they start passing the ball backand forth. On makes the offense goes to defense and denies the ball inbound with 2 players guardingthe one offensive receiver. They play 2on2 to the other end. All baskets count 1 point.

You can play two basket games or 2 minute games. You then progress upwith your time and or basket games as you see fit. In order to make the defense really work.Swing the ball from side to side a couple times before looking in to score.

*Teaching Point:1. Defensive stance, jumping to the ball, fronting2. Offensive player: sealing, Doleac stance, pointing to where you want the ball

    placed for entry

McHale DrillThe player uses one hand to tip the basketball on the backboard while using the other handto touch the rim, backboard, or net. On the 3rd tip the player changes sides with thebasketball. Put the ball in the basket on the 18th shot.

Strip and PressureIf a player is undersized, we teach this technique. As the ball is dribbled by the offense withthe right hand, the defender will sense the pull-up shot attempt and slaps down the ball onthe dribble pick up with his LEFT hand and tries to hit the outside of the ball. Many timesthe ball will hit the shooters leg and roll out of bounds. If the strip is missed with the lefthand, the right hand pressures the shot.

    *Teaching Points:

    1. Hit the outside of the ball in a judo chop fashion.2. This is easy to do with players who are loose and high with the dribble.3. Stress the shot pressure if the strip is missed. We dont want an all or nothing

situation on the strip.4. Teach the block out after the pressured shot attempt.5. BOPCRO=Block out, pursue, chin the rebound, outlet

MISC. DRILLSScrimmage GamesOne basket games or two basket games really heighten the intensity, pressure, andconcentration.Four minute games are good to simulate NCAA media time out stoppages or one half of ahigh school quarter. Short second scrimmages where you start everything with single digitson the shot clock are good. If the defense gets the ball, let them play out their offensivepossession. Special situation work is excellent. Players love it and it makes them think andLOOK FOR WAYS TO WIN.

    *Teaching Points:

    1. It is smart to utilize the balls in the rack sureness concept in their work.2. Players need to huddle and coach each other.3. Complaining about officiating is an automatic loss for your team.4. Reward winners.

Off Season Pick-up GamesWe do not allow the defense the basketball on made baskets. The offense keeps the ball. They can stay and play a half court possession on the ends they scored on or take the ballwithout inbounds and go the other way. This is pre-determined for the entire game.
