How do these verbs work?

There are certain groups of verbs in

Spanish that have a stem change in the

present tense. The verbs empezar (to

begin), querer (to want), perder (to

lose), and preferir (to prefer) are stem-

changing verbs.

What changes is…..

• The E of the stem changes to IE in all forms except in the form NOSOTROS. The endings ar the same as those of regular verbs (-ar, -er, -ir).

Stem-changing verbs give their stems the

• But first, let’s just add all the correct endings.

• So, since “querer” (to want) ends en “er” (querer), which endings will we add?

The “er” endings:
