The Spanish fields are running out of farmers
Since October there were 11,899 more unemployed. A total of 107,277 farmers who beco-
me part of the lists of INEM, a 49% higher than a year ago and 12.48% more than in Sep-
tember. With 11,899 more people unemployed in a month, the field is on the way to run
out of farmers. In total, the number of unemployed in the primary sector reached 107,277
in October, according to data released by the Ministry of Labor.
This amount translates into an increase of +12,48 percent from the previous month and
remains 49.7 percent higher when compared with October 2008.
Agricultural unemployment rose in all autonomous communities, especially in Castilla-La
Mancha (4,598) and Andalusia (1889) and only went down in Valencia (-53).
Re the general rate, unemployment rose 2.67 percent, equivalent to more than 98,906
unemployed during the previous month and 990,327 more than a year ago (+35.14 per-
cent), bringing in 3,808,353 people unemployed in Spain, of which 49.9 percent are wo-
men.

Strong wind up to 80
km pr hour and tem-
peratures going down
10 degrees has put
The Valencia region
in minor alert.

Aubergines:
Still low prices but this vegetable is extre-
mely sensitive to low temperatures so if
as predicted it gets colder the offer will
fall and prices should go up.
Avocado:
The first Hass avocado of Spanish origen
will be ready around 20 november, As
usual impossible to predict since the fruit
dont ripe on the tree and the growers in
Malaga speculate in prices more than in
picking ready fruits.
Califlower:
Very few kgs available
Capsicum:
Many red pepper on the market and also
many prices. Good quality is not easy to
find. The problem it the high temperatures
that makes the growing of the produce
explode but only in size since the walls
remain to thin and that can be seen after
some days as the shell life is much shorter
than the ones of thick walls. Ramiro, Ca-
pia, Sweet bit and chili peppers are availa-
ble and at rather low prices, which might
change when hungary season ends now.
Celery:
in 2 weeks
Clementines:
Marisol and other early varieties has basi-
cally finished and its now 99% clemenules
and related clementines. The coming 2
weeks will be very complicated since its
too green with a degreening period pf 5
days and few available kgs to harvest. Ma-
ny packhouses are 3 days behind and are
compromised to fixed programs. Prices are
non negotiable with maybe a sligh decrease
but most probably it will remain at its le-
vel, which is not cheap. We expect this si-
tuation to have changed in two weeks whe-
re the quantity will be more and quality
excellent.
Corn:
Continues with 14x2 flow..
Cucumber:
After a week with increasing
prices we predict they fall again although
not to the low levels of 2 weeks ago. Still
good quality and few quality problems.
Figs:
Still few kgs available and now with a nice
new 250 g bag

Grapes:
Last week from Moyca
Iceberg:
Right now the Iceberg scheduled for harvest
week 48 are being picked, and the quality is
good but rather light. If we will have a cold
front there will be a serious lack of iceberg.
We might see a december as last year with
very high prices.
Broccoli:
Good quality and low prices but lower tem-
peratures will stop the overproduction.
Kaki:
The problems continue in Valencia with the
fungus. Overriped and black flesh and skin
damages are the reasons for a disastrous sea-
son that has cost growers more than 30 mio
€ in lost fruits. In the regin of Huelva the
fungus hasnt arrived yet so no overriped Ka-
ki here. The persimon however are rather
large so not much use for punnets but sharon
is ready and soon there should be more than
sufficient. Prices are much higher in Sevilla
than Valencia.
Lemons:
Started with high prices that quickly went
down but has found a steady level. There are
not too many lemons and even with Turkish
on the market the prices remain high. We do
not expect too see large size lemons in the
nearest future. As soon as the lemons on the
trees has a comercial size they are being pic-
ked so there will be very few in the sizes 60
to 90 in the next months. Its with other words
very difficult lo ensure large programs with
one size only.
Oranges:
Navelina until februrary. Good size but harvest
are up to 40% lower than last year and prices
are high.
Plums:
Still Angeleno of acceptable quality but prices
go up.
Romaine salad:
Super quality but due to strong winds lots of
leafs are taken of and they are hence a little
light….ot mini romsin r in 10x3 bag or flow
Strawberry:
The lack of water is not good for the plants and
this can mean that the coming season will co-
mence with difficulties.
Tomatoes:
There are many tomatoes and quality is exce-
llent.Pricres should go down.
Zucchini:
Steady prices and superb quality
