Weather is again playing a very important role in the agricultural situation. Heavy rain the last week has disturbed the beginning of the citrus season and in Valencia the fungus are blossoming in the kaki fields with the extreme humidity. And as almost breaking news we have just heard that the important Lorca region south of Murcia had extreme rain yesterday which have flooded the broccoli fields with stones and mud.

On the other hand the until now extrermely high temperatures has also made an important impact of the current crop. Strawberry planting is delayed because of the hot weather and the cucumbers have grown too fast and speeded up the season about 3 weeks and at the same time the sun has been to strong on th cucumbers which are now much paler than they should be.

It has been the hottest summer in more than 40 years with medium temperatures 2 degrees above the normal in the period 1971-2009. And 23 July was the hottest in Valencia since 1911 where they started to record the temperatures.

The extreme weather reflects in many exporters who are very restraint with season prices. Most fear the extreme weather and has not forgot how eggplants and cucumbers last year reached shy high prices due to hard frost.

Broccoli:

The last summer broccoli from the highland are being sold on the domestic market and the weather is not favourable so the offer is limited. Winter broccoli is starting slowly and in 2-3 weeks the first quantities should be available.

Capsicum:

All colors available and the offered prices from Spain are rather high compared to prices seen on other markets. Low demand but not too much offer also.

Clementines:

The first Oronules has been picked and de-greened. The colour is very good but quanti-ties are small. Clemensol will be ready this week. Few quantites next week due to bad weather.

Courgttes:

Excellent quality from Dribling however it will still be 1 week before production really will commence.

Cucumber:

The market has once again collapsed, Most markets has their own production and the spanish crop is ready 3 weeks earlier than normal. Further to that there are problems with the quality. The cucumber has simply grown faster than the leaves on the plant and thus a large part of the produce has not had any shade to grow under and the sun has simply “bleeched” the cucumber under these conditions. In august when days are even shorter and wew have much less sun the normal strong green colour will be back on the spanish cucumbers.

Grapes:

The quality is not improving and for the remaining 4 weeks of season it must be expected that quality diminish. There must be expected less color on some of the grapes. Eating quality remains the same, but all the nices grapes has been picked. Demand is good and availability going down so prices are going up. Fur-ther rain has molested and there are now even fewer kgs left than expected.

Iceberg:

Expected start med winter crop in week 44.

Kaki:

Difficult situation in Valencia where the Ha-wain Fungus has returned. The fungus has blossomed under the latest wet climate and much more crop is affected than initially thought. Few kgs are being exported and those products can be perfectly ok but if they are from a field with the fungus the life of the kaki will be extremely short and result in a very soft fruit within few days. Many export-ers are waiting for the rain to stop and then start a treatment and see which fields are affected. But under the current circumstances noone can guarantee a healthy produce from the Valencia region due to this fungus. Fur-ther the variety Tonewash which is being ex-ported is not as resistant as later varieties. In Sevilla and Leppe they do not have the prob-lems and soon there should also be produc-tion available from this area. Many small sizes expected for this season and even to many despite the important sickness in many fields.

Lemons:

New Crops of promofiori are being picked now. Relative high prices but small sizes. High level of juice.

Pomegranades:

New crop of Mollar

Oranges:

Expected start week 43, which is a little later than expected but weather condi-tions has delayed the start of the season. Right now its estimated a 10 to 15% lesser harvest.

Plums:

Very quiet this week but there

are still quantities of Angeleno. If the cur-rent situation with low demand of Spanish plums continues there will be produce available until mid november.

Satsuma mandarins: Okitzu has been sent during the week but rain has disturbed harvest so limited quantities.

Strawberry:

The planting are 2 weeks delayd due to the heat, however there is still time to more delays or recoveries. Too early to say when season can start.

Tomatoes:

Very few quantities plum and cherry and it will be at least 2 weeks before the situatins is stabilized.
