• Venetian (Italy) – He tried to sell his plan to anybody who would listen– Henry VII – England– John II – Portugal– Charles – France
• All declined
• Eventually Ferdinand & Isabella of Spain agree to fund the voyage
• “14 hundred and 92 Columbus sailed the ocean blue”
• Columbus miscalculates– Underestimates the
size of the Atlantic– Overestimates the size
of the land mass
• Four Voyages– Caribbean– Central and South America
• Columbus died thinking he had failed
• 1493 – Line of Demarcation – Papal decree• East = Portugal West = Spain• 1494 – Treaty of Tordesillas – reaffirms the line
