How to Teach

• Directly and Systematically Teach the sounds– Model correct letter sound

correspondence– Provide examples and

nonexamples– Do think-alouds so student knows

your thought process and then is able to replicate it

• Provide guided practice for the concept– Fade assistance or prompts

• Provide independent practice on target area– Assessments need to be on what

was taught and follow the objective for the lesson

– Use data from the lesson to dictate where to go next or what to reteach

How to Teach

• Read bilingual books to practice letter sounds and build up fluency – Using bilingual books will help

make connections between the two languages and build up vocabulary and comprehension

– Use repeated reading, partner reading, chorale reading, echo reading, or tape recorder reading to help build fluency

Closing Thought

• Building a student’s first language will only reinforce and aid in the construction of a second language.
