An immediate extension of your home, porchesand decks bridge the gap between the insideand the great outdoors, providing indoor

comfort while making the most of nature’s benefits. Therecession has pulled Americans back toward the simplerpleasures in life, which appear to include a greater focuson outdoor living. All the more reason, then, to get onboard with the new wave of deck and porch design:creating a seamless transition between the inside of thehome and its outdoor counterparts. “Americans areturning off the television. They’re gathering outsideagain,” says Paula Wallace, president and co-founder ofthe Savannah College of Art and Design and author of“Perfect Porches” (Clarkson Potter, 2010).“We’re in themidst of the great porch renaissance, and clients wantinterior designers and architects to create intentionaloutdoor spaces.”

Wallace says a porch is no different from a living

room, withone big difference.“It generallydoesn’t rain inthe livingroom!Designershave to makeporches a littlehardier.”

Weather-wise accom-modationsinclude cabinets and other storage devices to stow pil-lows or artwork during a storm and ensuring the porchis deep enough to allow guests to sit outside and not getwet on a windy, rainy day, she says.

As for decks, Bobby Parks, DeckExpo advisory councilmember and owner of Peachtree Decks and Porches,Alpharetta, Ga., says that while homeowners still ask forspecific design elements like diagonal decking, roundeddecks and square and bayed corners, their greatest concern is creating cohesion.

People want a porch “that looks like it belongs withthe house,” he says. That calls for building in more hidden fasteners and decorative lighting.“In an effort tomake something look more like it belongs, we’re doingmore crown molding, more PVC-wrapped columns,” hesays. Often, homeowners even request tiled floors andfireplaces in their porch designs, Parks says.

When it comes time to decorate a porch, bring yourpersonal design aesthetic out with you, and don’t beafraid to rearrange.“My porches evolve, transform andtransfigure all the time! We redesign the porch to suitthe occasion,”Wallace says.

If guests are coming to call, arrange outdoor furniturein a way that will inspire interaction.Wallace likes toskew outdoor sofas and chairs at odd angles to “createenergy and an artful imbalance.”

The true key to designing a successful outdoor spaceis to make it a reflection of you and your family.

“All great porch design starts with people,”Wallacesays.“The colors, the décor, the art – everything shouldreflect the porchers’ values, ideals and spirit.”

A Plant For All SeasonsSneak a peek at what’s prime

for planting month-by-monthBy Anna SachseCurious about what plants, flowers and edibles are the easi-est, most fruitful and just plain fun to grow? Think monthlywhen it comes to choosing the best backyard crops, and don’tforget to bring your appetite and a few spotless vases.

OctoberIt's the perfect time to plant hardyfruit trees such as apples andpears, and shrubs like blueberries. In hot climates, transplanting pot-ted peach and nectarine trees is agreat choice.

November Full sun and good

drainage calls for sowing wildflowers, poppies and

larkspur from seed in mildclimates. There’s still time to

plant fast-growing greens like arugula for an aromatic

winter salad.

DecemberContinue to harvest lettucesby covering them with a frostcloth. These lightweight, permeable fabrics also protectaloe, citrus and tropicalsin southern climates iftemperatures dip. Otherwise, use this time to spread organic fertilizers. Take timeto weed if the soil isn’t frozen.

SeptemberPlant bulbs like daffodils andtulips. Plus, you can prepare part ofthe garden for next year with littleeffort or expense by sheet mulching.Layer cardboard, leaves, straw, compost, fertilizers and soil about 18-inches deep to make a thick bedwhich will slowly break down andproduce a rich planting medium inabout six months.

AugustLate month is a good time to start grass seedin the northern half of the United States.Temperatures are usually moderate enoughto make watering less of a problem. It’s alsoideal for planting fall produce like radishes, turnips and spinach in most regions, andkale in warmer southern states.

JanuaryThe blossoms on citrus trees, like Meyer Lemons orKaffir Limes, have a heavenly fragrance. In colder climates, small plants can be brought inside and kept in containers as long as they get five hours of direct sun each day.

Watch for more tips in the next issue of Spacescoming in November.

ome say, “Home is where the heart is.” Well for Michelle Bunch nothing could be truer. Her beautiful home located in Durham, California invites visitors to

kick off their shoes and stay awhile. Lounge by the pool and enjoy thepeaceful serenity of her backyard.

However, for the Bunch family the backyard is more than just a placeto gather. It’s a place to remember.

The family literally poured their heart and soul into transforming thebackyard shortly after the tragic loss of their middle child who was bornpremature.

“We wanted to create a serene, peaceful place for the family,” Bunchsaid.“We needed a project.”

The project started off small. Mrs. Bunch and her husband simplywanted to fix up the backyard and put in a pool.

“I grew up with a pool,” Mrs. Bunch said.“Then my husband sawthese amazing pools and our little project ballooned.”

and Mrs. Bunch’s backyard went from a dirt lot with a few weedsfor color to becoming a backyard vacation destination completewith a luxurious in-ground pool and spa, a quaint cabana com-plete with a BBQ and big screened TV, outdoor kitchen andplenty of seating area to lounge by the pool.

The in-ground pool built by Bob Hill and Associates features amagnificent Pebble tech finish which sparkles in the sunlight asif little gems lay at the bottom of the pool. When the sunlighthits the pool, it’s as if a prism of tiny gems is casting its colorsonto the water’s surface.

A beautiful river rockscape made from hand formed rockssurrounds the pool and leads the eye to one of the key focalpoints of the backyard: the waterfall.

compliments the relaxing and inviting atmosphere. It’s a backyard where you can feel right at home throwing an elegant

dinner party but it’s not too formal and stuffy. One would feel just ascomfortable kicking back or grilling some burgers for a casual back-yard BBQ.

Visitors can’t help but be drawn to the cozy cabana with 60-inch-bigscreened TV. Here you can sit and watch the game on one of thebarstools or talk to the chef as he BBQs on the Webber grill in the out-door kitchen located inside the cabana.

A ceiling fan helps to keep guest cool on those hot summer days anda cute “ice chest” disguised as a barrel helps free up the bartender by letting the guests help themselves.

The cabana features a concrete formed bar top, extensive custom cabinetry and acrylic stucco siding.

to their destinations in style.Throughout the property are hidden treasures,

pieces of an extensive collection of old miningtools and “finds” from family vacations.

Next to the pool is an old wood sign for StoverCamp.

“I used to hunt Stover Camp when I was youngerand now I take Dillon (my son),” Mr. Bunch explains.“The sign had been knocked down and had alreadybeen replaced. I saw it on the ground and decided totake it.”

Now resting near the pool, it’s a reminder of thosegood old days.

Other treasures include a grinding stone that oncebelonged to Mr. Bunch’s great grandmother who was aWintu Indian, a rusty mining pan, an old saw, a 1932Coke bottle opener and some glass insulators Mr.Bunch found while hiking the Feather River Canyon.

“Most of the rusty stuff my wife doesn’t like comesfrom Nevada and Utah,” he said.

The entire process was time consuming and fairlypricey; however, Mrs. Bunch said its not impossible.

“If you save and do a lot of planning, you can do it,”she said.

Mrs. bunch proudly admits her part in the project.“I seeded the lawn,” she said. She said she was determined not to have a sod lawn.“I knew I could grow my own grass,” she said.In the end she had to reseed the grass

At night, the pool lights coupled with the soothingsounds of the waterfall give the backyard a resort feel.

“But it grew,” she said. And through her family’s hard work and that of

their contractors, their project took shape.Today, the Bunch’s two small children Ava, 2,

and Dillon, 8, run through the backyard and adda little commotion to the serenity of the waterfall.

Trees from their late son’s funeral continue togrow in tribute to his memory and help to bringthe present and past together.

For the past 50 years ChicoElectric has kept the lightson for many Butte County

residents — always trying to keepahead of trends and staying aheadof the curve on “green” or more effi-cient technology.

In fact, the company’s historywith renewable energy dates all theway back to the 1970s with thermalsolar energy. Then in 1999 ChicoElectric expanded its solar programto include Photovoltaic (PV) SolarSystems for residential customersand a wide range of commercialcustomers in agriculture, food pro-cessing, manufacturing and educa-tion.

Some of its proud customersinclude Butte College and SierraNevada Brewery.

For the past 11 years Chico

Electric has been an industry leaderin the popular PV Solar System andaims to meet all its customers’needs from the early planningstages to engineering the system tomaximize efficiency and finally toproperly installing the product andmaintaining it for years to come.

“We have experience and a vastarray of electrical knowledge,” saidJosh Cutler residential sales mangerwith Chico Electric.“We have beenin business for 50 years, how manyother solar companies can say that.”

With the popularity of green tech-nology increasing, many peoplewant to jump on the bandwagonand go into the solar energy busi-ness; however, many companiesdon’t have the experience and thebusiness sense to back up theirproducts.

good as the company,”Cutler said.“If the company goes out ofbusiness, who is going tohonor your warranty?”

Cutler said businesslongevity is somethingconsumers need to consider before signing a contract. Chico Electric offersa 10-year warranty on its product. Its award-winning“Quick Service” department ensures its customers’power plants and electrical facilities are well maintainedand operating 24/7.

Just how much does it cost to go solar?

Well going solar is an investment; however, the costvaries greatly depending on amount of energy neededto suit the customers’ needs and the environmental factors on the property.

“Everyone utilizes power differently,” Cutler said.“power usage determines system size.”

For instance a family of five with three active children,a TV in every room and a multitude of computers mayuse considerably more power than a single person thatworks full time and is rarely home.

Additionally customers desiring to go solar often havedifferent goals. Some customers simply want to reducetheir bill by 50 percent. Others want to zero out theirbills.

Environmental factors also play a role in system sizeand the ability to harvest as much energy from the sunas possible.A heavily shaded area will require a differentsystem than a large sunny lot with few trees.

The systems at Chico Electric are designed to achievethe highest possible energy harvest by using advancedtechnology system components and by engineering atop quality, high efficiency electrical system.

All systems are installed using the latest PV solarmodules, high efficiency power inverters and a mount-ing system matched to the roof type or ground.

Safety, performance and reliability are the chief

priorities for its systems. To determine how to best meet customer’s needs,

Chico Electric asks each customer what he/she hopes toachieve by going solar. Then it looksat the customer’s power usage over the lasttwo years and surveys the propertyto determine what is needed toachieve the customer’s goals.

Cutler said Chico Electric candesign to fit a budget and canincrease the system over time as thebudget allows.

aniya Nayak is coming ofage. Her first TV reality

show back in 2003 was a teendecorating show on ABC Familycalled “Knock First.” She was 30 atthe time and had just graduatedfrom Boston Architectural Collegewith a degree in interior design.

Over the last seven years, howev-er, she has founded her own designfirm, Boston-basedTaniya NayakDesign, and movedinto the adult worldwith appearances on“Oprah,” the “Today”show and “The EarlyShow.” She also hasbecome a fixture onvarious HGTV reali-ty shows, including

her current one,“DestinationDesign.”

Nayak, whose family emigratedfrom India before she was born, describes herself as a modernistwho likes to solve problems, bothinside a home and outdoors.

“What I like best about what I do,”she says,“is that it actually improvespeoples’ lives. It’s interesting what adifference good design can make inyour attitudes and energy and howyou live your life.”

How have backyards changedin the last few years?

TANIYA NAYAK: What I see happening is the whole idea ofoutdoor rooms. People are dividingtheir yards into zones for livingrooms, kitchens and exercise areas, and decorating them almost like youwould indoor rooms.

How much space doyou need for an outdoor room?

For once, I don’t thinksize is important. Itmight be a 10-by-10 footterrace, or it might be abig backyard. It’s reallywhat you do with thespace that matters.

How do you definespaces in an outdoorroom?

With foliage and furniture. Foliage, eitherin beds or potted, is alsokey for providing

color. Outdoor rooms are a challenge in that you don’thave walls you can paint.Whatever color there is usuallycomes from flowers and plants and also textiles in theform of canopies, linens and upholstery fabrics.

How important are canopies?I don’t think you have to cover the whole space, but I

do think you need to have a spot where people canretreat and get out of the sun.And maybe it’s anumbrella instead of a canopy. Just so you have room forsome chairs and a table.

What kind of furniture works best in an outdoorroom?

It depends on weather and climate. Basically, you wantthe feel of an indoor room – the ease and coziness – inan outdoor setting. That usually means upholstered furniture of some kind. One thing I would suggest ismulti-use furniture – say a coffee table that doubles as astorage chest or a chest that can also be used as a bench.

What about lighting?Very important. I’m intrigued right now by all the

solar-powered lights on the market. They power up during the day and shine at night. They’re also very lowmaintenance. You basically just stick them in theground. But I also like white Christmas lights on trees

and foliage all year-round. Theycreate a wonderful mood.

I understand you just movedinto a new apartment. How isdecorating for yourself different than for clients?

Let’s just say I’m not a greatclient! When I’m designing for aclient, I reach a point where I knowwhat needs to be done and I do it.For myself, though, I tend to over-analyze everything. And thatultimately is a little paralyzing.

What kind of house did yougrow up in?

My father is an architect, and I

was raised in a classic modernisthouse with white walls and Wassilychairs. My dad was also a huge fanof fabric wallhangings – it was hisway of adding color – and I’veadopted that big-time.

What’s your favorite house inthe world?

I love Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses – the clean lines, the simplicity and the way they relate to the land. Also, the way he makesthe hearth the center of the house. They are a big inspiration for me.

Whether it’s a NewEngland clap-board Colonial, a

Prairie-style on the Plainsor a Southwestern stucco, people describe a home inthe same terms: by color.

It’s the “yellow house onthe corner” or the “graytwo-story in the middle ofthe block.” The conditionand color of the exteriorgive a home its identity andalso account for much of its curb appeal, says SusanPowell, owner of InFocus Design, a Crete, Ill., firm thatstages homes for sellers.

Invariably, says Powell, she advises clients to freshentheir look with a coat of paint. Indeed, exterior paint hasthe “huge bang for the buck” because it so dramaticallyimpacts a home’s look, contends Erika Woelfel, director ofcolor for Behr.

Home sellers may be able to brush off the doldrums ofthe housing market by dipping into a can and getting afresh start. Paint isn’t simply decorative. It shelters theunderlying surface from the elements.

Not just sellers, but any owner who loves his home willwant to protect it with a good coat. Here, a “primer” onsome recent trends and advances to get you started onwhat could be your most significant home improvement.

Color TrendsA good exterior paint job should last 15 years or more,

Woelfel says. While there are cycles of fashionable colorsfor interiors, exterior and building product trends stretchover longer periods, says Debbie Zimmer, director of the

Paint Quality Institute, adivision of the DowChemical Co. But buildingtrends and other influencesdo bring changes to how wecolor our homes.

For instance, homes builtwithin the last 15 years aremore likely to have part ofthe façade extending out, allowing for two main bodycolors, says LeslieHarrington, director of TheColor Association, a colorforecasting group. Roofs

have become more colorful, with deep green and blueshades added to the traditional grey, black and neutrals,Harrington explains.

The old “rule” dictating that a house shouldn’t containmore than three exterior shades for trim, doors, body androof, has relaxed. It’s not uncommon to see four differentcolors on a house, says Harrington. Multiple colors shouldbe selected carefully, so they don’t compete or overwhelmone another. For instance, trim and roof colors mightmatch, with two neutral body colors and a “pop” of accentcolor, perhaps on the door. The house of the future is likelyto be smaller, and Mary Lawlor, a color specialist at Kelly-Moore, thinks “cleaner, lighter neutrals” will be used moreoften to give stature to homes with slightly shrunkensquare footage.

Judgment CallRegional and architectural differences also are big color

AAfull time professional artist for over thirty years,Frank’s formal art education took place at the Schoolof Practical Art and the Art Institute of Boston withfurther studies under Marko Lolo Marchi and StevenYankopolis.

Over the years, the artist has won many awards forhis paintings and sculptures. In September of 2005he was awarded the City of Chico, California, COBA“Peoples Choice Award” and a commission for a large outdoormural. By invitation, his work has been featured in the New YorkState Museum, and in art galleries in New England,Virginia,North Carolina and California as well as in Zurich and Geneva,Switzerland.

On October 9, 1998 he was a featured artist on ABC’s nationally televised “Good Morning America” show.

A prolific painter,Wilson has created over 2,900 highlydetailed works in oils and watercolors since 1995 in addition to hundreds of sculptures. His paintings are in private and cor-porate art collections in dozens of countries on four continents.

The wilds of nature, in all it’s diversity, is the commondenominator for this multi-talented artist. The hills andmountains in the wilderness areas of Northern NewEngland and Northern California are the inspiration for hiswidely ranging work in water media and in oils. Hiking bythe light of the full moon has inspired Frank to create aseries of “nocturnal” watercolors. Climbing in the highcountry, the artist has witnessed the light of dawn and

dusk and translatedthose moments into dramatic paintings. These unique watercolorand gouache paintings capture themagic of a moonlit winter’s evening or amountain sunset. Sunny days or violent storms, clouds play an important role in many of his landscapes.

Wilson also paints in oils which he prefers to emphasize theatmospheric quality of mountain vistas and the winding trailshe loves to hike. Still-life painting fills in those times when theartist cannot venture into the wilds.Wilson is known for his“landscape portraits” of well known natural beauty spots anddetailed paintings of wildlife. His wildlife art has been exhibitedin many of the major Eastern Wildlife Art Shows. Two of hiswildlife paintings were published in Canada as limited editionprints of six thousand each which sold out soon after publication.

Frank Wilson has always had a deep appreciation for naturalbeauty and a reverence for the natural world. His passion is

evident ineach of hisworks, whether itbe a smallgouachestudy an oilpainting ora largemural.
