Lightning Round Review

What is the difference between Communism and Capitalism?

What was the Cold War?

What was the Cuban Missile Crisis?

Cold War

The U.S. and Soviet were trying really hard to influence countries around the world to become either Capitalist (U.S.) or Communist (Soviet Union).

The U.S. tried to contain Communism

The Soviet Union tried to contain Capitalism

SpACE RACE

The U.S. and Soviet Union competed with everything: who could build more nuclear weapons, who could influence more countries, etc.!

So, it is no surprise that they competed to see who could get to space first.

Sputnik

In 1957, the Soviet Union won the first victory of the space race by launching Sputnik I into space.

It was the first man made thing (satellite) to ever circle the Earth.

Boo!

How do you think the U.S. felt?

Page 8: Space Race A Look into the Space Race Between the United States and the Soviet Union.

NASAThe U.S. was so mad that the Soviet Union beat them to space!

President Kennedy took the U.S. space program, NASA, and put a lot of money into it!

President Kennedy guaranteed that the U.S. would be the first country to land on the moon.

Space Race

Why did President Kennedy want the U.S. to beat the Soviet Union in the space race?

How would it make the U.S. look if they kept falling behind the Soviets when it came to space exploration?

Space Race

If you were Kennedy what would you do to get ahead of the Soviet Union when it came to the Space Race?

U.S. And Space

NASA was making huge strides.

John Glen was the first American to orbit the Earth - he did it in February of 1962.

President Kennedy’s guarantee came true! On July 20th, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon!

Man on the Moon

America was fixated on the news to hear whether or not the astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldren would make it safely on the moon!

Man on the Moon!

This was a major victory for the U.S. in the space race - In your face Soviet Union!

“That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” - Neil Armstrong

Importance of Being First

Why was putting it a major victory for the U.S. that the first man on the moon was an American?

How did it make America look?

How did it make the Soviet Union look?

Technology

The Cold War brought a time of technological advancements.

Can you think of any big changes in technology that were developed around the time of the Cold War?

Technology During the Cold War

The number of...

TVs sky rocketed...

nuclear power plants and bombs went up...

technologically advanced weapons soared.

A major reason that technology advanced at such a rapid pace is because the U.S. and Soviet Union were competing to see who could invent more things to help them look more powerful than the other side.

SPACE RACE CONTINUES

The space race continued for the rest of the Cold War.

The Soviet Union and the U.S. competed to see who could the first satellite and missiles into space.

Programs like Star Wars were started - these were very expensive programs.

Technology

Technology has changed our culture and lives!

When a lot of people started getting T.V. in the 1960‘s people changed the way they got news.

Think about the Civil Rights movement.

What technology has changed our culture today?
