Long Erasures Codes

DLR presented an updated draft Orange Book On the use of Erasure Coding for CCSDS space missions. Progress not very fast.

New version will be discussed at Fall 2012 Meeting with increased level of detail.

Short (64, 128, 256 bit ) LDPC codes for uplink - Orange Book

NASA are producing an Orange Book on “Short-Blocklength LDPC Codes” suitable for emergency and low data rate uplink. They would provide improvement over the existing BCH codes.

Draft version discussed in this meeting. It will be updated, possibly with better codes.

Apr12-cesg-16

NGU WG Summary Progress • Version 2 of NGU Green Book on the CWE

• Book was updated to include scope, rational, application profiles, and trade-offs performed to date, and performance data. DLR material to be integrated before Fall 2012.

• NASA presented White Paper on proposed NGU upgrades to TC Sync & Channel Coding

• Current TC standard is out-of-date compared to current state of the art. Some current missions (NASA MSL, Solar Probe and potentially ESA Euclid) have identified benefits of having a better performance uplink.

• Minimum changes to the standard would be to add additional uplink codes such as LDPC to profit from the performance gains. Other potential changes include use of a larger message start sequence to aide in synchronization, and use of a signaling byte to signal the end of the CLTU instead of the use of a failed code word.

• In order to facilitate comparisons, SLS AD made the “let’s preserve terminology” presentation so that performance and functionality of the current TC vs the proposed TC changes could more easily be compared. WG concurred.

• NASA presented status and results on short LDPC codes for uplink

• New non-binary NASA LDPC code performance is approx. 1 dB better than the binary ones – very comparable to the performance of the DLR Turbo codes for uplink presented in Fall 2011 meeting.

• However the non-binary codes are approx. 64x more complex than the binary ones making them less attractive at this time for implementation. This work is on-going.

SLS REPORT

ACTION CMC-A-2011-11-04 CESG

CESG to investigate various approaches to encourage greater use of teleconferences for Working Groups, especially those that are currently not taking advantage of this technology. Rationale:

Please remind that CCSDS face-face meeting time is becoming an increasingly expensive and precious resource, and that all Working Groups are expected to be using these media between Plenary meetings so that they come fully prepared for face-face decisional meetings.

Required input:

Responses (indicating which WGs are/are not using inter-Plenary tele/web-conference) are due by the CESG meeting on Friday 20 April. To be included as a table in SLS Area report. SLS Reply: See table for SLS Area next page

Apr12-cesg-27

SLS WGs Telecon Usage SLS WG Input

C&S C&S is using telecons/webconferences between meetings whenever needed and appropriate; e.g. specially for finalization of reviews. For the Agency Reviews for LDPCC and SCCC several telecons were held. The same for DVB-S2 Red Book.

NGU+ SLP

Both NGU and SLP have used Telcons in the past to prepare and solidify positions before the CCSDS Plenary meetings. Of particular success have been the Proximity-1 Telecons to resolve issues concerning the 5-year review of all three Prox-1 blue books that are under Agency Review.

MHDC The MHDC WG held a teleconference in March to discuss WG progress and review the status of action items. The WG continues to make use of very productive email exchanges. Telecons will be held as needed.

RFM RFM WG makes limited use of teleconferences and webconferences between meetings. However, the group extensively uses email exchanges where working versions of documents intended for blue or green books are reviewed and edited with clearly identified track changes. This interactive approach leaves only a few points open for discussion at the face-to-face meetings that as such have squeezed in duration from a full week to 1.5 days. Telecons planned for this summer.

SDLS SDLS WG is holding one or two intermediate webex telecons in between two face-to-face meetings. Difficulty is to find a common period of time due to time differences between JPL and Europe,

SLS Area vs. IOAG Priorities (Letter 13 March 2012)

Top Priorities: • LDPC codes (3 mission models): Two standards published

(LDPC + SCCC) with the third one (DVB-S2) to start Agency Review.

• Space Data Link Security Standard on the way to publication (pending on prototypes).

Priority 1, 2 and 3: No other SLS standard directly in IOAG Letter. SLS Reply: SLS Area is fully aligned with IOAG requirements

and priorities.
