Space & Category Management Driving Intelligent, Customer-Centric Retailing

We are entering into the age of real customer centricity in which everyone throughout the organisation – including everyone involved in the category management process – must be hyper-attentive to the needs and wants of the consumer at all times. Technology-enabled consumers expect to be recognized and treated as individuals – they want “my way” retailing.

Shopping behaviour has become complex and meeting the omni-channel demands of the consumer requires an “always on” category management platform that runs at the current and future speed of retail. This solution guide discusses some of the key category management trends and outlines how JDA’s solutions could enable that transformational journey to be ready for the category management requirements of tomorrow in our physical-and-digital retail environment.

‘Category management is about satisfying customer requirements, profitably.’

Category Management Market Trends

It is predicted that grocery stores will shrink by 6.2% by 20181, putting more and more pressure on category performance.

Despite shelf space shrinking, a recent consumer study by JDA/Centiro2 highlights that bricks and mortar stores will continue to play a significant role in the purchasing/fulfillment journey in the future. It is estimated that retail stores will provide an average 72 percent of overall retail revenue through 20173, yet while it is clear that the retail store is here to stay, the format of stores is evolving.

We have identified three key category management market trends that are set to have a profound impact on the next generation of category management.

Localise OfferBusy lifestlyes are driving up demand for convenience, both in terms of shopping patterns and choice of goods. With an ever-expanding choice of shopping alternatives, retailers must pursue a level of differentiation necessary to attract customers and be in a position to offer localised assortments that meet changing needs - fast.

Big data is providing transformative opportunities for retailers. Success will be based on mining the volume, variety and velocity of consumer data streams in order to generate insights. These insights can be used to develop shopper profiles/segments and help identify the behaviours driving customer demand. The timely recognition of shopping patterns and demand trends can in turn be translated into more successful product launches, optimised assortments and merchandising, more personalised marketing and better consumer relationships.

Optimise SpaceProducing local, store-specific assortments adds many levels of complexity to the capabilities required from a category management platform. The multiple data sources need to be mined and the insights translated into assortments that have been optimised for the local demographic, supported by automated, store-specific planograms.

A shelf-connected supply chain ensures stock and shelf availability, with store ordering and replenishment being driven from the planogram.

Omni-Channel OperationThe majority of shoppers are channel-agnostic, they just want an easy-to-shop experience fitting their shopping mode: stock-up, fill-in or immediate need5. Channel blurring is making it increasingly difficult to distinguish between store formats so store-specific planograms will optimise the facings and shelf quantities to unique store demand. Items need to fulfil productivity demands or be replaced quickly.

Omni-channel retail requires a category management platform that supports in-store picking, adoption and use of mobile technologies and applications, as well as store compliance. Store-specific presentation (Min) and shelf capacity (Max) should drive an accurate min/max ordering process & set safety stock parameters optimising the inventory sent to store.

Channel Clustering | Intelligent Clusters by Category

Store ClusteringIntelligent store clustering & assortment insight

With JDA Channel Clustering, determining the best groupings of your stores by such critical factors as capacity, volume and localised demand, you will more accurately plan at a lower level of detail. They can form unique store groups by product segment (i.e. class, department and category). Plus, you can plan by representative group instead of individual stores. You’ll produce the optimum number of plans needed to achieve spot-on merchandising results within every channel.

JDA Channel Clustering helps you focus on pressing category management issues before you execute a planogram reset. You’ll configure the best shelf space, floor plans and product assortments for an entire category. JDA Channel Clustering enables your planners to target preferred local product demand in terms of popularity and shelf inventory. The application also helps to find the optimal number of groups to balance your micro-merchandising goals with your operational costs to save valuable time and money.

The Shelf-Connected Supply Chain Leading practice is to drive store ordering & replenishment from the planogram to drive a shelf-connected supply chain. The planogram is the final assortment & presentation. Store-specific presentation (Min) and shelf capacity (Max) drive an accurate min/max ordering process & set safety stock parameters. The data is sent in advance of the live date of the planogram (e.g. week -8) using the status & lifecycle of the planogram & floor plans.A shelf-connected supply chain also allows to synchronise the demand forecast with the assortment and the planograms by driving the changes in seasonality and promotion activities to better plan the space in the stores.

Benefits of a shelf connected supply chain:Optimised facings and shelf capacities to store-specific forecast and performance (considering merchandising rules and constraints) and calculation of accurate branch level shelf min/max parameters which are sent to store replenishment:

• Utilising store-level sales or forecast in planogram production balances the coverage of better performing products to reduce out-of-stocks

• A balanced coverage of products on the shelf will reduce the inventory exceptions and improve the shelf replenishment efficiency

• Inventory rules from the planogram for each item can suggest which products are candidates for back room storage (i.e. those products whose demand exceeds the max capacity allowed at the shelf due to merchandising)

The Seamless Digital Supply Chain

To survive in the new era, retailers will need to operate at a faster tempo than their competitors by understanding and anticipating shoppers’ behaviour throughout the shopping journey.

Understanding the what, why, where, how and when of consumers’ buying behaviours will allow them to think like a customer but act like a retailer. This new reality will create the need for an “always on” category management platform that runs at the speed of retail, facilitates agile decision making and supports rapid strategic shifts.

This heightened focus on customer centricity implies an unprecedented level of connectivity within the supply chain in order to create a seamless customer experience. As the world’s leading end-to-end supply chain solutions provider, JDA can provide interconnected capabilities, enabling companies to optimise for Profitable Customer Commerce while concealing any supply chain disruptions from the customer. This commitment to providing end-to-end supply chain capabilities is underscored by the fact that JDA is the only company recognised as a leader in all five Gartner Supply Chain Magic Quadrants: merchandise assortment, supply chain planning, S&OP, transportation management and warehouse management.
