“My mother, she was my first friend in the proper sense of the word. She was

not an emotional person, she was completely controlled, calm, at peace with

herself and with the world”.

(Nelson Mandela, 1996)

Time management is a valuable and fundamental life skill required by everyone.

This valuable skill is highlighted in an examination term. Course work deadlines

remain important simultaneous with preparing for exams due to commence in

around three weeks’ time (College) and four weeks for the Senior Preparatory.

Jenny Handley (www.jennyhandley.co.za) in her weekly article in the Career Times

(adapted- Cape Times, 28 April 2015) stresses the ‘P’ time management plan:

Guard against habits taking up work time

1. Preparation

2. Procrastination

3. Perfectionism

4. Punctuality

5. Prioritising

6. Productivity

7. Proactivity

8. Prevent (interruptions)

9. Perhaps

10. Play (balance)

Following her simple plan will assist all students and families in the run-up to the

mid-year examinations. All teachers are available to assist where required.

Herewith a short synopsis of the past fortnight’s news:

The Gr 12 Geography students joined forces with the Matrics from Bridge

House and investigated various current urban geographical issues in and

around Cape Town.

The College students were presented with a study-skills course presented

by Elevate Education. We hope this input assists them in preparing for the

June exams.

The P ‘n F Committee has embarked on several projects improving the

lives of many in our community. It has been wonderful to host various

‘handovers’ at our recent assemblies.

Congratulations to Michael Krasnik (Gr 8) on being selected to participate

in the South African National Figure Skating Championships! We wish him

well.

Jeremy Gardiner presented a fascinating assembly talk to College students

on contemporary global economics and politics.

Congratulations to Chelsea du Toit (Gr 10) on her recent success in the

stress in a constructive and mean-

ingful manner? Stress can be a posi-

tive aspect of our lives if managed

correctly. Part of our SP journey is

ensuring that each and every pupil

operates in a nurturing environment

where there is guidance and help

every step of the way.

For those of us who are having a

stressful day, let’s remember the

advice of Dr Colinda Linde: 1)

Breathe. 2) Try to move out of a

reactive mode into a proactive

mode. 3) Respond rather than react.

4) Take a deep breath and remind

yourself that this, too, shall pass.

Nothing lasts forever.

Stress is part of daily life. Learning

to cope with it is the key to success

and happiness. Let’s ensure that

between us the key is passed onto

our children.

Yours sincerely

Did you know that SP will be visiting the Tutankhamun Exhibition?

Dear Mums and Dads

I came across a very interesting

article recently emailed to me by

Liberty Life. (Kindly contact me

should you wish to receive the

link). Lynne Gidish suggests in her

article entitled, Stop The World– I

Want To Get Off! (April 2015), that

if your life is constantly fueled by

adrenaline, then you are putting

your health at risk.

We are all living in a high stress

society where we are all moving

faster and expected to respond to

everything immediately. This start-

ed me thinking about the stress

that our children may be exposed

to as well. Children also have the

pressure of meeting deadlines at

school, fitting in socially, peer

pressure and social media to name

but a few. What better place than

the school environment to assist

our children in learning the skills

needed in life to cope with daily

Reddam House ASB is very proud of our new state-of-the art

lockers! Other upgrades include new paving and closed

circuit cameras for improved security.

SP plans to visit

Tutankhamun Exhibition

in June

Exciting plans are afoot, thanks

to Ms Edwards, to take the SPs

on an adventure packed visit to

the Tutankhamun Exhibition in

the last week of the term! Watch

out for further details!

Upcoming June Examinations

Kindly note that the Study Guide Examination Book-

lets will be handed out shortly. Please remember that

this is a guide to the work to be learnt. It is not meant

to be absolutely definitive. A study timetable will also

be included for your child’s convenience. The timeta-

ble is a suggestion and your child is more than wel-

come to draft their own custom study

timetable. Our best wishes go to all our

pupils (and their parents) as they pre-

pare for the upcoming June Examina-

tions. Carpe Diem!

MOTHERS DAY CELEBRATIONS / MOEDERSDAG VIERINGE

Top: Isabelle Facey’s (7E) beautifully decorated bookmark.

To celebrate Mother’s Day, the Grade 7’s each made their own bookmark for mom. For the first

time in their primary school career, the Grade 7’s are introduced to the theory of poetry in Afri-

kaans. We used our knowledge and the opportunity to write a poem for mom. The pupils thor-

oughly enjoyed being creative in Afrikaans.

CHARITY UPDATES – AT A GLANCE

Atlantic House of Hope: We have received their wish list and will be shopping for them this week and paying them a visit. We are

going to take a few of the knitted jerseys and receiving blankets for the babies – just waiting to find out how many they are looking after

at the moment. They have received vouchers from Baby City and they have been given a monthly grant from Diskem, so most of their

needs are being met at the moment, which is fantastic !

James House: Spoke to James House in Hout Bay and their fundraising lady has left, so we are in contact with another woman now.

She is sending us her very current wish list, so that we can go shopping.

Zip Zap: Still trying to get hold of Zip Zap to see what they need this year.

Sea Point Place: Liza has met with the relevant people there and they have asked for our assistance in their Frail Care division. They

are also sending a birthday list through, so that we can each take turns (with other parents and children too), to hand over birthday

cakes and cards.

Good Hope Park: We did an Easter egg drop and met with the manager but they are very organized, don’t have a wish list at all and all

they want from time to time are magazines and books

Little Lambs: Little Lambs doing their presentation at the College Assembly this coming Wednesday at 9.30am. we did a massive

‘Teen’ Makro shop and we will be handing this over at assembly, together with the 30 (donated) Essence make up bags. We will also be

handing over baby jerseys, courtesy of Mrs Oosthuizen’s mom and sister, for the Karl Bremmer maternity ward, which Little Lambs

visits every month. There are also receiving blankets donated by PEP that will be handed over too.

Book/magazine drive: This is currently under way in the Junior school – thank you !!! This is for the old age homes and for Chic

Mamas in Hout Bay. Excess magazines will go to Includid and excess children’s books will go to the Orphanages and to Little Lambs.

Includid Homes: This is a massive project and Liza has taken on !!! We did an Easter Egg drop. Painting (arranged and paid for by the

Sea Point Lions) at Forest House has almost finished and we are going to arrange an installation day of furniture, curtains, bedding etc,

and we will need your help – date to be advised. Half the PEP donations have been collected from Mark Beack and are being stored at

Liza’s house, the other half will be collected next week sometime, when a driver can assist. Most of the PEP donations will be going to

the 67 residents of Includid Homes and the balance will be split between other charities. INTERACT club (Reddam Matrics run it) is

currently doing a non- perishable food drive for Includid and busy storing it in one of the classrooms. We are arranging for the Manag-

er to do a presentation at one of the assemblies – waiting for his response. An article is going into the Senior Prep and College newslet-

ters next week, together with photos. We also want to arrange a planting day, so we can replenish their vegetable garden – date to be

decided on.

TIN CAN TOWN: They have received their donation of R5000 and have already used it for sterilizations – they have sent us a thank

you letter and they are coming to do a presentation at Senior Prep Assembly on Friday, 8th of May. LATER ON IN THE YEAR, WE

NEED TO DO A DRIVE FOR DOG AND CAT FOOD, BLANKETS, TOYS, COLLARS, LEASHES, ETC

Salesians: They have changed their wish list, and we are busy going through their new one. Once we have decided what we are buying,

we will get them to do a presentation at one of the assemblies and do a handover. Liza did an Easter Egg drop for them.

Somerset Hospital Volunteers: Apart from the Easter Egg drop (300 Easter eggs, courtesy of the Junior Prep and Pre Primary

school), they haven’t requested anything further yet. They usually make a request when they need something for their volunteers.

Walking with Brandon Fund: We have donated R5000 towards the expense of the Bionic Walking suit.

Hout Bay Soccer Club: Lina arranged for their bus tickets to be bought for the first half of the year and we will pay for these tickets

again in the middle of the year. Also trying to see if they need anything else

Reddam donations: Benches and notice boards in the lower school, planters on the staircases - these 3 requests are underway.

Siyaphambili Villiage orphanage: Maryna is dealing directly with the ‘mother’ who runs this orphanage. The allocated money is going

towards fixing the mom’s car, as without it, she cannot collect donations or do anything for her orphans. We will be giving her some of

the PEP donations, books, etc, as and when we get things in. We are waiting for clothing sizes, so we can get some clothes together for

these orphans.

SPORTS REPORT

SPORTS REPORT Winter Sport Winter sport is now in full swing and we have a busy programme this term. Please come and support our young sports stars whenever possible. We applaud their enthusiasm and passion for sport that continues to grow from strength to strength.

Match Reports

Netball

U10 vs Highlands: The U10 netball team played against Herzlia Highlands on Wednesday 29 April. The Red-dam girls defended with determination and made use of every opportunity to score. Reddam won 4 – 0. Congratu-lations to all the girls. The woman of the match was Angeliou Difford. U11vs Highlands: The U11 netball team played against Herzlia Highlands on Wednesday 29 April. As the teams were well matched in strength and skill, our opportunities to secure goals, were limited. We congratu-late the girls on their enthusiasm and positive spirit. The final score was 1 – 1. The women of the match were Paris Human and Jordan Lloyd-Sim.

U12 vs Highlands: On Wednesday 29th April the U12 netball girls played against the under 13 B-Team from Highlands. During the first half we were a little nervous and we lost a lot of opportunities to shoot. The score was 2-0 to Highlands at half time. After some team talk we were determined to win and managed to score 6 goals. We won the match 6-5. Well done to the team. Woman of the match: Laura Kaipa.

U13 vs Highlands: On Wednesday 29th April the U13 netball team played against Highlands. It was a tough match and the final score was 15 – 9 to Highlands. Throughout the match Reddam House tried their best with some great defence in the goal circle. Our passes were not very accurate and the opposition took advantage of this. Well done to the whole team for great sportsmanship. Woman of the match: Yeyethu Madasa for her energy and commitment to the end

Soccer

U11A vs Sea Point: The U11A team took on Sea Point in their opening match of their season on Tuesday 28 April. After showing great promise in the practices leading up to the match, we went into the encounter with great confidence and we delivered a masterclass in attacking football. We quickly got into rhythm and camped in the opposition half scoring some early goals. We ended up winning 9-0 with Cameron Breen scor-ing a hat trick. Santiago Borges and Jamie Forsyth also weighed in with 2 goals apiece. Well done to the entire team for an outstanding performance. U11A vs Weizmann: On Tuesday the 5th of May, the U11A team played against Weizmann in a pulsating

encounter. The match was always going to be tough and it lived up to its billing. We struggled to control the

game in midfield and thus didn’t dominate play in the centre. However,

Page 11 SP Newsletter

we still manage to create quite a few chances but didn’t take them. Weizmann took the lead in unfortunate circumstances but we fought our way back with Cameron Breen scoring a blinder. With a few minutes to go we conceded a free-kick from just outside the box. William Coleman’s outstretched hand just failed to keep the ball out - to add to his array of outstanding saves. Weizmann won the game 2-1 and we were deeply dis-appointed as we felt it was a game we should have won. Unlucky boys! U11B vs Highlands: The 1st outing of the U11B soccer team was a game of lost chances. Great defence kept Reddam House in the game but unfortunately opportunities in front of the opposition goals were not taken as the match pelted out to a 0-0 draw. Player of the match was Lucas Vegezzi for his tenacious play.

U11B vs Weizmann: Reddam House produced a fantastic effort to dominate Weizmann and win the game 4-0. Lucas Vegezzi’s converted penalty early in the game laid the foundation for real attacking football. Troy Hoffman led from the front with some powerful runs through the middle and Nicholas Jackson showed some fine touches in this great game.

U13A vs Weizmann: The under 13 A team played a hard fought game against Weizmann. The game was fast paced and moved from goal-to-goal. The Reddam House midfield play proved the difference between the sides with Reddam House winning 3-2. Well played to the side who have struggled to defeat Weizmann since the foundation phase. U13B vs Highlands: The under 13 B side found themselves at the end of a drubbing from a strong Herzlia Highlands side. Poor decision-making and not taking their chances were reasons for the defeat. The final score was 0-4 to the opposition. A big thank you to the u/11’s who played their hearts out for the side.

U13B vs Weizmann: The U13B Soccer team produced the best performance in a number of seasons to drub Weizmann 4-1. Skilful passing and some accurate shooting from robust striker Bardia Kazemi saw the team dominate against a willing Weizmann side. Bardia scored a hat trick of goals.

Hockey Boys Hockey vs Rondebosch: On Wednesday 6th May, the Reddam House boys' hockey team played against Rondebosch at the Western Province Cricket Club. The boys were up against strong opposition. They held the game in the balance but eventually our defence was broken. Reddam lost seven nil. Player of the match was Yeyethu Madasa.

Girls Hockey vs St Georges: On Thursday 7th May, the Reddam House girls' hockey team played the first ever home game in a league against St George's Grammar. The game started in Reddam's favour when Bobbi Brown scored from the first short corner. The result stayed one nil. Well done, girls!

Rugby

U13 vs Jan van Riebeeck: On Wednesday the 29th of April the Reddam House SP Rugby Team played an away practice/match against Jan van Riebeeck at the Conradie Fields. Although Reddam lost 22:5 to Jan van Riebeeck, the experience was put to good use. Special mention goes to Freddie Needham who scored the only try for Reddam House. Keep up the spirit boys!
